I just wondered - the only horse mag I ever got on subscription was called Pony, years and years ago, where they had those lists of tack for sale, and I bought dandy brushes with my pocket money, and the HandH was what you bought if you were buying/selling as there wasn't internet in those days. Ah, my age catching up with me :D

Anyways, I need to get more horsey titbits, so I stocked up on some mags last week to try and get some inspiration for working with my youngster. Nearly £4 a throw, but there you go. I read the HandH, but found it wasn't really aimed at me, as I don't compete and stuff, but loved the ads. Several other mags had good articles, but I was put off by all the flashy horses doing serious lesson work, and I still didn't feel they were worth the cost - I can get second hand books on Amazon for less tbh.

Which mags do you read, and would you recommend for a happy hacker and having a youngster to bring on ? And do you subscribe or mix n match ?

Ta muchly, sm x

I used to buy Your Horse and sometimes Horse but found them full of fancy fashion clothes pictures and most of the stuff in the magazines was repeated after a while, but for a happy hacker probably try Your Horse.

right, I'll give that one a go ta ! That is the one that I didn't get as they didn't have it. Hmmmm the fancy horse clothing leaves me cold too, let's face it, a clean top in the morning is a filthy, horse snot and muck covered, non clean top by the time you've got back from the yard. Peeps who keep clean and starched in their posh togs can't be very hands on :D

I don't really buy them any more, I find all horse mags tend to repeat themselves a fair bit, but if I see something relevant or I'm getting on a plane, I usually buy one xD (or I buy some of the american horse magazines, which I like!) Otherwise I have a bad habit of reading the main articles in shops :o
But Your Horse & Horse & Rider I think are the better two? H&H isn't great unless you're into competing & comp reports/articles....
Either mix & match I'd say or ask around to see if anyone would lend you their magazines after they've read them ;) Lets face it, what do you do when you've read a magazine? It sits around, then gets binned. I take my old ones down to the yard for whoever to have!

I think I'll pass this lot on too, as nothing's grabbed me. Horse and Rider was the best of the lot, I must admit. Maybe we should have a swap shop on here for mags ! sm x

I used to subscribe to all of them but once I discovered this forum I found I read them less and less, I would end up with a big pile if magazines that I hadn't even looked at.

When I needed to save some money I cancelled all the subscriptions, if I was to subscribe again I think the only one I would get would be Horse and possible Your Horse. Horse and Rider didn't really appeal to me at all and I found myself skipping through most of it!

i really like Horse mag, and i used to like PONY and horse and rider, except recent horse and riders have LOADS of NH in them and PONY reapeats itself every few monthes and i dont want to learn how to trot thank you! Your Horse is ok too, but i am interested in competing and it doesn't have much of that sort of stuff. H+H i only get when theres an offer on at burghley or something. (last year - £1 for H+H plus free horse and eventing )

I don't buy anymore magazines. I used to buy everything! I used to buy when younger Horse and Pony, then it changes to h&p and was very glossy and I went off it. I loved Your Horse back in the day, Horse & Rider was/is also a good one. I don't buy anymore as they seem to cover the same things year in year out and nothing I couldn't find online for example. The last time I bought one was a few weeks ago when I went into hospital and treated myself, they are also not cheap anymore at £3.80 a go! I do buy Horse & Hound sometimes to have a browse, a read and look at the properties.

I subscribe to 'Your Horse' (got a cheap subscription with my Tesco clubcard vouchers!) and it's def my favourite, but I do read Horse and Rider sometimes.
