I can only assume few of you actually know how much child benefit actually is. A benefit which btw was available to everyone with a child, regardless of income before recent reforms. So I suspect the vast majority will have already received their child benefit, via their parents claims as children.
Anyone born post 1946... so you'd have to be pretty old not to have benefitted from Child Benefit. According to some of the news reports it was to encourage families to have children after the depletion of the population due to the two world wars. Given we are now facing an elderly population issue with pensions and care, we need all the new young babies to pay for it especially as those in the middle have been hit by student loans to repay and are putting off having children.
