Why you DON'T use the cheapest manege quote... and pics

OP, not sure if it is too late for this to be helpful, but you could use a sailmakers palm to help you get the needle through? They were designed for sailmakers to help them with any hand sewing that needed to be done.

These are the same as a collar makers palm, I have one somewhere but aren't really suitable for use with a curved needle unfortunately

Thank you for the sailmakers' palm idea. I kinda made one... the needle was *still* hurting my hand even thru my thick weight training glove, so I put a wodge of folded up blue industrial 'kitchen roll' inside & that did the trick.

Carthorse - yes, I agree, cushionride is ****. Mine was fab for 2 years, then disintegrated. Thistle warned me about cushionride & about the company, but I was too excited about getting my school. I suspect that my 'stone layer' is road planings/leftovers/building rubbish. It's def not proper stone!

Creme - I appreciate your help with the needles. No mad rush - I won't be doing any more sewing til the w'end at the earliest!

I rode again this eve & it's so, so fab being able to fit in a circle without going around trippy bits. On the one hand, I want to crack on & do another row & reclaim a bit more of my school. On the other, it really is a horrible job & the thought of doing more just makes my heart sink!
