Wimbles Breaks PaddyMonty - A Cautionary Tale

Apologies but I did have a giggle - sounds like great fun!

We're horsey and therefore by definition, quite insane. We willingly spend huge amounts of money, time and effort in all weathers and conditions to do what is by all accounts, a rather dangerous sport. And yet we love it!

Dare I ask why Dangerous Brian is banned from horseball?

Is it because he keeps nicking the ball?

He likes to wave..........often in the faces over the opposing team............as they gallop towards him..................which is frowned upon..................apparently........

Already stealing Wimbles horses.

Good point.

Anyway, do we get photos next time? I reckon we could get some lovely shots. You'd best be playing at rugby coinciding with a poloX weekend soon so I can pop up with my camera. For my personal collection ;)

you might have to wait if he has buggered his collateral ligament, I was somewhat disappointed to not be able to suggest barefooting on that post..... ;)

that has to be the best report on HHO, priceless.

You are clearly bonkers, but please more reports like this !

I am planning to be playing at next event but a have a feeling i am more broke that I thought. Trying very hard to rest knees but I don't do resting very well.
I'm not worried about you taking pics. We couldn't even find each other once in two days last time. That said, if playing I wil be in my swanky tighty whiteys (breeches). Long time since they came out to play.

Update (coz peeps moan at not getting the dirt on the story as it progresses).
Went to docs a week last monday who decided to refer me to Acute Knee Injury clinic. Said appointment would be one to two weeks.
Decided I couldn't wait that long so went private. Visit to Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon last night.
Upshot.........
Left knee has tear in Medial Collateral ligament. Right knee has tear in MCL and tear in cartilage. MRI later this week to determine level of damage.
So basically injections in to knees, I'm on box rest for 2 - 3 months followed by slowly being brought back in to work.
Will miss this season for horseball :(

Ouch, you've done a proper job there! Knee problems are the pits - I've been off since end of Jan and no sign of me getting back on a horse this side of 2018 (tho I have been doing some walk hacking and gentle schooling... ;) ).

That's bloody rubbish luck. Really not what you need, having just found a new sport and nice horses to borrow.

But you could spend the next couple of months acquainting yourself with Mr Racquet and Mr Ball, ready for the winter arena polocrosse leagues...

Alright. I'll go back to my hole in the ground and shut up.

I once made a similar dumb decision to have a first go at horseball on my very narky & quirky ex race horse. I had an amazing time, I wasn't great but we was fast! Horse was surprisingly well behaved, the only thing was whenever the ball hit the back wall she s**t herself and spun and galloped off the opposite way. I'd 100% do it again if I still had the little horse!

I think I have met Dangerous Brian! Surely there can't be two devastatingly handsome grey TBs called Dangerous Brian in the Derbys/Notts area?

Sorry about the knee PM hope you have a swift recovery.

A final update.
Good news first, I now have 10 finger nails and I can walk normally :)
The not so good news.
Owner of horse I was schooling to compete decided to sell as had no rider for him with me out of action.
Last visit to the consultant he look at me with very stern serious face whilst informing that due to nature and extent of the damage I will now have a permanent weakness in both knees. Any repeat of the damage will be much harder to fix, could take up to a year and would most likely leave me in a wheel chair for much of the recovery.
Given the impact the injury has had on all areas of my life during recovery I've decided not to push my luck. Riding competitively has now ceased. I have plenty of other stuff to do (mainly sailing) and having spent 53 years in the saddle I've probably done my share of horse stuff. Still intend to go for an occasional hack when the opportunity presents itself but that will be the extent of my involvement with horses going forward except for supporting my wife and daughter with their 3, fixing lorry etc. Some things will never change.
Note to self, time to accept you no longer have the body of a 20 year old.

Oh that is such a shame, and resulting from something that was meant to be fun! So sorry you won't be able to continue competing, but hopefully helping with your family's horses and the occasional hack will give you the horsey fix you need.

Oh no, PM! i was just thinking you'd been quiet on here for a while and hoping you'd been able to get yourself back into the saddle. What a bummer :( enjoy the sailing and don't forget us!

I'm so sorry that this happened, I really am. Life really isn't very kind at times and our little team continues to suffer the blows. I'm not so sure I will be back after the events of recent weeks :(

Oh I don't know, life sometimes just pushes us in a different direction. I really needed to commit to either horses or sailing but couldn't decide which way to go. Problem solved.
Moving the boat to Scotland next season for a couple of months so will end doing a trip around the entire GB coastline by the time the boat returns home. Plans for trips to France, Holland and Denmark also on the cards so plenty of exciting times ahead.

Oh no :( I'm sorry to see this. But good luck with the sailing - I'd always be interested in nice sailing photos (with or without your backside on show :p ) if you're ever feeling inclined to come and share on here.

I'd say you're welcome to come and hack mine (I do actually have a "horse" you could ride, rather than a pony and everything), but you know I'll only try to lure you to the dark side!

I might take you up on the offer some time, you could always come sailing. Nice little boat.....

I don't understand why you can't do some dressage? Ok, it's not horseball, but...
Surely the risk of slipping and twisting the knee is much greater on a boat? Ergo, if you can sail, you can ride...no? <g>

Forgot to say, not nice news re the knee. These things do happen, but it's still rotten.
