I was browsing ads for horses for sale and someone had included this in their description of their competition horse:

"NOTE: If you are looking for a happy hack please don’t ring because I won’t sell him to you. This has been a heart wrenching sale and we care where he goes"

I found it quite annoying, but maybe I am in a bad mood?

It simply makes me want to tell them to stuff their competition horse where the sun dont shine, I wouldnt buy it if it was the last one available in the world

If they really gave a stuff, all they'd care about would be the 'happy' bit. They wouldn't be putting potential new owners off, they want to see as many people as possible to find their horse a great new home.

It depends on how you read it. If you take it that they won't sell to people who want to hack because they think they're crap, then yes, its rude. If you take it that they are saying this horse isn't suitable for hacking, its suitable for competing, so if people were to buy this horse as a hack it would then play up and end up at Beeston etc, so it isn't for sale down this route, I think fair play.

^^ what he said

BUT, I have a horse that wouldnt be happy as a companion etc I dont think, he enjoys work and becomes even more sour and evil if he isn't. So if someone rang up wanting him as a field ornament, i don't know if they'd be my first choice of home for him..

Wouldn't bother me, buy it it's yours, hack it, stuff them, as long as the animal is properly looked after.

You have a valid point there. You can vet a prospective home as much as you like, but once money has changed hands then that's that, the horse is no longer your property.

I think it could be worded a bit better, for some reason these days the term 'happy hacker' is seen by some to be derogatory when it's probably not meant that way.

If they said that the horse is too talented in competition to go to a home that only hack and don't compete, I wouldn't take offence at that, thats fair enough.

I think they could have worded it better ie - Would like to go to competition home only.

When I need to find a loan home for Millie I will not let her go to a child that is still on the lead rein, or even just off the lead rein. I will only let her go to a home where she will be ridden by a confident little child that will have tons of fun with her, I know Millie would be a nightmare if she was a beginners/lead rein pony!

Agree that they have not exactly worded it very well!! Even if i was thinking of looking at the pony, it would make me think the owners were stroppy so an so's and seriously put me off. Something along the lines of ' xxx is happiest when in work and for this reason we will only consider selling him to a competitive home' bla bla bla.

i don't have a problem with it at all!

if pilfer was to be sold, he would have a very similar note in his advert as he adores competing and wouldn't be happy just hacking around.

i know, i have tried when i didn't have enough money to BE event him!

he went on loan to an eventing yard for 3 years and they commented on how much happier and relaxed he was when the eventing season started in march and got grumpy again as soon as it stopped in october.
