As the title really.. or if not unseen. Would you travel over, try and buy from Ireland?

Please don't take offence anyone, but I always though horses from Ireland had been hammered young (hunted as rising 3yr olds) and wouldn't dare buy one.

I now have multiple friends, one who buys unseen from Ireland and ends up with lovely horses and another with a real genuine alrounder gelding that came from Ireland after hunting as a rising 4yr old and now rising 9.

They're obviously much cheaper over there (and after having a look online on Done deal) and some look quite nice/genuine from the ad. I'm not looking for anything yet, but will be in the future so can dream!
One said friend swears you can get some lovely horses from Ireland for good money and buys unseen.. the unseen part freaks me out a little!

I think buying unseen is a real gamble and it wouldn't be for me, I wouldn't have the time or confidence to put wrongs right and I couldn't take the heartache either. However yes I definitely would consider going across when looking for my next horse.

Yes I have, nice horse but no cheaper than it would have been to buy here her, I just didn't find what I wanted in England. I did buy privately though and not via a dealer if that makes any difference, but it certainly wasn't cheaper to buy over there. A good horse will be worth it's money whatever country you buy it from, vetting was cheaper over there though.

A bit of a generalization perhaps??????

Fiona

But a common one, around us if we ever heard of something coming over that was what was said about them. Usually bombproof but might go wrong from hunting hard as a youngster but likely to be cracking if it stayed sound.

Does anyone really think that every horse in Ireland goes hunting let alone that they are all hunting at 3 !

I know people who yes would believe that maybe not of all horses but definitely the majority.

Also to answer the OP's question unseen no unless someone i did trust had seen it. Go over there maybe but i also know a there are quite a few dealers over here who would have freshly backed horses shipped across so maybe just as good opportunity.

Maybe I am generalising but even after having a look on donedeal and a few other selling sites today, a huge majority of the young horses in Ireland all say they’ve hunted and they’ve not turned 4 yet..

No I would not .
Every purchase I make is a carefully considered one .
I understand why pros do because they just pass them on or return them .
I also would not bother going to Ireland for horses less than 8 to 10 k unless perhaps I wanted an unbroken RID .

Yes, done it several times. I always want good confo pics and movement videos first, then if I'm happy, get them vetted depending on the price. I've got horses here to see to, and can't just up sticks and get over quickly. With the power of Whatsapp, I can see everything and make a decision immediately, which you need to do, as the good ones sell very quickly. Wouldn't buy anything that had hunted for a season young, and don't like to see them loosejumping over big fences either. Only gone wrong once, with an older mare, who looked great in the videos in a school, but was very unhappy hacking out, so eventing was not going to be her game.

It wouldn’t be for me as I need to click with a horse - it would be too much of a risk that it wasn’t quite right for me (through no fault of its own - I’m just really fussy!).

No. Partly because I'd never be brave enough, but mostly because I have to sit on a horse and know that we will probably get on well together before I could consider buying it. Too many miserable people stuck with horses that do the job they want but they just don't gel with.

No. Not from anywhere. Not because I don’t trust my eye for a horse but because I want to like it as a person, it has to have something about it’s personality that gets to me, and I can’t tell that from photos and videos.

The best thing I ever did, I have a cracker of a Connie which if he had come over here and been fattened up/got going by a dealer would have been decent money.

Obviously I spent a fortune on him though to get him up and running but I’d never be able to afford to buy what I now have.

I’d do it again, so long as I was happy to go through the challenge again and had the funds to pay for help.

Another day, another few posters added to the Ignore List. Oh, and if you really don't want people to "take offence", then in future try not posting offensive generalisations.

It's wrong to make assumptions and generalizations about anyone.... I hunted for years and never saw a 3yo out, nor have I ever met anyone who hunts 3yos,.

I bought my mare unseen from Ireland. It was hugely, hugely exciting seeing what would step off the ramp. She was supplied with a 5-stage on which the absolute barest minimum details had been supplied, and turned up with a large defect in her hoof (which grew out but she was a bit sore til it did) and undisclosed shiver.

It all started well (apart from being lame & spending ££££££ getting her foot xrayed) but then she turned out to be bargey & aggressive on the ground & too spooky hacking, so I sold her. Her new (male) owner loves her to bits & is getting on v v well with her, but I lost a lot of money on her.

I havve now bought something else, having tried a few. I tried one or two that were a perfect match on paper, but I really didn't like riding them, and the one I bought, I didn't want to get off & couldn't wait to get back on.

Would I do it again? No, & certainly NOT from that dealer. PM me if you want to know who it is. Am I sorry I did it? Again, no, because I have learned an awful lot both from the horse & from the experience. Neither of whicch I would want again!

I wouldn't be making any assumptions ;)
But no I wouldn't buy unseen unless I was in a position to basically blow the money spent if it was a disaster.
as someone else said I like to meet a horse even if I'm pretty sure I'm going to have it. I knew I was going to take Kira on and was pretty sure I'd get Salty on the day but I did want to give them a pat and look over first.
I have taken a few chances on horses over the years, some have worked out better than others but if i was looking to spend a reasonable sum rather than my bargain basement steeds then I'd want to be able to see it in the flesh first.

Yes brought a 4yr old from a dealer from a photo 5 years ago. (Huge reputation and well known)
Best horse I've ever bought. Would do it every time. Only from 'known' people.

Yes, I would from a dealer. I've been very lucky with the horses I've bought unseen. I expect to get a good price for such a quick sale. I can afford the gamble and am prepared for any outcome but really enjoy the oo what's arriving feeling and then getting to know them. I don't buy anything with a job in mind (anymore) and just see what they are good at/enjoy which probably helps.

Aimee you’ve always been an idiot nice to see you haven’t changed :)

Always knew you were someone I knew, a hater, who follows me and has only ever commented on my posts and clearly has a huge interest in me? Ha. :) Funny that eh?
I can only guess who you are.

It wasn’t posted to insult anyone or in that way, I apologise if it seems that, a few friends were concerned hunting before a 4yr old would mean long term damage. I was purely interested in if anyone has bought unseen from Ireland.

I have seen some lovely horses and purely posted if anyone would buy unseen. A friend knows a good dealer in Ireland who she recommended, specialises in people buying unseen and sending videos, photos etc. It’s expensive to go over but thought some other posters may have experience..
