Just a musing, following a few comments recently that have made me think "would you say that if there were a comeback?".

I would, I think, and I would post the same as I do now- anyone with a modicum of intelligence can work out who I am, and I think I have half of HHO on FB :D

This is assuming that HHO doesn't have the rep it has atm... So removing all associated stigmas of the forum :D

Yes I would. I'm not secretive about who I am, I have nothing to hide.

Aye, I would

My name is Emily beech and I'm a horseaholic. Anyone who doesn't like my views or opinions... Well, that's just tough.:D

On the internet I feel it's a good idea to protect your privacy a little. On Facebook I have my settings so that I can decide who sees my posts. Also on there I can remove anything I want (in fact my whole profile, if I wish) whereas here everything you say tends to stay up for years, possibly forever!

It's not that I have anything to hide, it's more about keeping a level of privacy, especially as I have an extremely unusual name.

Good answer QueenBee

Im in two minds.
I have nothing to hide, and I don't hide behind my username.
But I like to keep myself to myself and I wouldn't want it to be that easy for other liveries to find out what I do/say whatever.

I don't think I would actually :o
I don't hide who I am, I think I'm easy to identify from my occasional competition reports etc. But I'd rather not make it completely public  I'm not on facebook either for that reason. I can't quite put my finger on it.

I do try to consider every post I make though and try to treat people how I would like to be treated :)

You do have an unusual (but pretty) name. And I know that because I am friends on FB with someone you're friends with. Not that I stalk you, please note! But just using your post as an illustration that identities are fairly easy to work out given a few facts.

For that reason Lolo, I don't really see the point in being anonymous. That doesn't mean though that I air my dirty laundry in public. :)

I am a member of other forums where you must use your own name. I do find that posters are more careful about what they say.

On others I like to use another name as for me its fun to use a silly name .. But I dont pretend to be something I'm not - anyone who knows me can work out who I am from my pics, location and username xxxx

I would, I tend not to bother saying anything out loud or in print that I wouldn't say to someone's face. I feel I am genuine in that way. I would never write anything on here that would come as a surprise to anyone I know and besides which I wouldn't be offensive to or about someone online I tend to air my grievances face to face. Things get solved quicker and everyone can move on and get on with things :) the only time I do think (not here as irrelevant)but on Facebook as I know employers and recruiters do check those places for offensive posts or images (I do this before interviewing anyone) so before posting anything I feel strongly about if its potentially controversial I would make sure I stood by the comment and consider how it would look to a stranger. I think clearly anyone reading my online posts would quickly understand that I love a good ramble

Yep. My username is my real life nickname so anyone who knows me who saw it would instantly know who I am. And loads and loads of people on here know me in RL as well. And people in RL also recognize me from my posts so I'm not very anonymous as it is!

No I wouldn't.

Not because I say anything controversial or even in the remote bit interesting, but I have an unusual name and previous experience with an ex who got a bit stalkie. So I'm cautious, less so now ive been posting a while here. But unless you know me, I dont think I'm super identifiable.

Yes, I know it's not too hard to identify me as I don't really try to be completely anonymous. But if at any point I decided I didn't want my HHO involvement to continue I could quite easily distance myself by removing any pics from my profile and altering my Facebook settings and friends list.

Then, someone (employer, stalker etc ;)) could Google my name without being linked to my past antics/any info about me on HHO!

Incidentally, although HHO CSIers like yourself can find me on Facebook from here, no-one on Facebook can trace me to here. Just as well, as half my family don't know I have a horse, it's a secret from most of my relatives! :D:D:o

Yeah, that's a bit like me then. If I Google my name, I'm the only one with that name (in the world, I think) who comes up.

Oh, actually, there was a granny with my name in America in 1947 who hit someone over the head with a gun. She comes up, and she isn't me. ;):p

No, just because I don't like to make harassing me any easier than it needs to be for the occasional weirdo stalker types that pop up once in a while, but saying that, it would probably take all of about five minutes for someone to find out exactly who and where I am if anyone were so inclined as to want to.

I get what you are saying and I know you have that big secret!! Actually keeping that secret in real life must be far harder than keeping it in the virtual world. I do agree what you're saying, but I know I can be found using google, so I just post things that I don't mind the world knowing and aren't incriminating. :)

And to your later point - I pretty much post under my real name. :)

I would. Don't think I've ever said anything I wouldn't say in public or anything I'm ashamed to be associated with.

My name is super common though so I could be one of several!!

Out of interest, why do people who say they'd be fine about posting under their real names, not do so?

Well, I post under my nickname because I prefer it, and it's what I get called by friends (or variations of!). It's also spelt wrong less often- Lottie confuses people, it seems.

Initially, I was more wary as I posted about my own adventures but also my sister's. When I joined, she was 13 or so, so I avoided my surname and used a nickname for her as well- which I still use, despite rarely calling her than IRL. Now, she's 19 and couldn't care less, but I've been Lolo for 5 years and it's stuck :D

Interesting..I made a new account yesterday as I lost my anonymity on my old account. So no, I wouldn't like to post under my real name. It's not that I say anything I wouldn't say to someone's face, as I liked to treat people as I would like to be treated. It's just I would feel uncomfortable about it. :o

What's this about HHO having a dodgy reputation atm?

Oh, it's got an awful rep in the real world. Especially CR, where people look for gossip and stuff it seems. I wouldn't mention I was on HHO in real life, although I'm sure a lot of people know I am.

I feel similarly to Lolo - you only need half a brain to work out who I am elsewhere online or in person. I doubt posting under my own name would change what I say much at all. Possibly 'cos I'm a cold hearted git who just doesn't care... Possibly also because I don't say anything on here I wouldn't say in person.

However, I feel it's probably not the best thing to come up on google for professional reasons though. Not that there's anything inherently wrong with being active on forums, but it's not something I'd advertise to a prospective employer. I deleted an old youtube account for this reason too.

The other reason I don't post under my own name is that I quite like being "JFTD". It's an identity solely defined by my horses and my late dog, which are the best parts of my life :o

eta - I also have Lolo's issue with name spelling. It's really not hard if you have even a rudimentary grasp of ancient Greek, but it does seem to mess with people's heads and it really bugs me misspelt!

Yup, my name is Sandi and I was born in 1984 :D
Tbh anyone in my small city/town who saw my pics and posts would recognise me and my horse anyway :)
