There have been allot of posts recently about "livery Yard Horror Stories" and "Worst Riding Schools", "liveries from Hell" and "Evil YO or Riding Instructors"!!! :(

I understand that there are some yards out there that are dreadful, YO's that haven't got a clue, B1tchy Liveries, Riding Schools that are expensive and you don't get allot from them BUT there are also allot of nice, happy yards with good facilities and nice people. There are many good riding schools with good horses and instructors that install confidence and develop peoples skills.

It's easier to moan and whine than praise and don't get me wrong there are niggles at the yard I'm on but i also know my horses are happy and 98% of the time I'm happy with the yard.

So without this turning in to a soppy "lets all hold hands and sing songs" kinda post, maybe we could say what good things attracted you to your yard, why are you there, what made you choose the riding school you go to and why do you keep going back every week?

:)

The yard where I keep mine is great! My YO is onsite, is really helpful and I trust her 100% to look after my horse.

Ha!
Weelll I moved to my yard about 2 weeks ago... it's only temporary before we move back to London but the yard owner and done nothing but help me out, spending hours with us working on my mares awful manners and she's going to help me to get her to load in prep for us leaving... been lending me books etc. Even reduced my weekly rent by a fiver because she knows I'm skint ;)
So no complaints here!!! :D

Im totally happy at my yard - my ym is a bit of an old tyrant but lovely with it and everyone knows not to step out of line - works great - we have fab facilities, grazing, clinics, lovely lovely people and everyone gets on brilliant - its wonderful!

** sings Kum By Ya and sways from side to side rhythmically**:D

The owner of my first riding school was a terrifying woman (:p), but she used to let me work for every other ride I had instead of paying, because she knew I was having a really rough time at home. If it hadn't been for that, I doubt I'd ride now as riding fortnightly (which was all we could afford) made it really hard to progress and I think I would have eventually got discouraged.:)

I'm at a fab "private home" yard, and couldn't be happier. I had a similar set up in Cumbria for five years too. I don't survive too well in busy livery yards, as there's always one, and I'm a very sensitive soul. I like to do my own thing, and not get upset at other owner's attitudes to their horses tbh. The YO is very knowledgable, and great for helping me with my youngster, the horses are very well looked after, great stables.......

Very happy and lucky :D sm x

My yard is great, I resisted moving there for years as had horror stories about it being bitchy but its the best yard I've been on. Wish I'd moved there years ago.

I have been working at a private home yard for nearly 9 years. There has never been more that 5 horses on the yard at any one time. I have seen liveries come and go, but only 4! The yard is beautiful, well run and the horses are cared for so well. there have been some issues but every yard has the odd problem.

ATM we have no liveries and its just Bondi and the shetland there but the school has just been resurfaced and the hay has just been cut too.

When I get my own horse, I wouldnt stable it anywhere else. Its in a perfect location, the hacking is amazing and *most* of the drivers are so consideate.

I like where I am (or rather where my horses are) The stables a huge and indoors and look really nice ( silly i know but i like that sort of thing lol.) HUGE ménage that has just been resurfaced (most yard owners wouldn't have bothered as it was good before but now its great, all manner of jumps (xc, sj, and a couple of wh type ones) fields are always well rested so always have plenty of grass ( even in winter i was well surprised tbh!) people cant do enough to help you either. My only 2 gripes ( VERY minor ones aswell ) are that the jumping field is overcrowded with jumps and has resulted in me not yet teaching my horse to jump as i wont find it too easy but eventually there will be a track leading up out of the field and go up to the top of our fields and back so the jumps will then be well spread out. And i have to pay £5 every time i trim up and i do a lot of this as i show but i knew this when i moved on and i will admit i spend AGESSS trimming and don't rush for anybody, so i guess its fair that i pay £5 lol. We also have stocks and a solarium so bathing and trimming is sooo much easier :)

I help and ride at the most wonderful amazing fabulous Riding School/Livery Yard in London, and wouldn't change it for the world :D

What could make it better? Nuffin!

One day, when I have my own horse, it will be at this yard!

They have helped me come on SO much! From someone who could barely canter without having a coronary, to someone who is now confidently cantering in open spaces, riding difficult horses and starting to jump! (even if some people don't think I should be... :p)

If anyone wants to ride/keep a horse in London, drop me a PM (though a few of you know where it is already ;))

Haven't been there for a couple of days and I miss it already!

I am at a private yard, and although there are faults (no water pressure, the wooden fences are naff so I have to electrify everywhere, the fields need a bit of attention...), however, my horses are 100% happy there, and it is only me, so no one to bitch with or about!!!

I know that the poo in the field needs to be picked up by me, regardless of when I do it.....I know no one is pinching my feed, my horses dont get stressed by people turning up at all hours etc etc.

The owners of the yard pretty much leave me to it. I only really speak to them when I pay my livery money!! 'though they are around 24/7 for the security of my horses as it is a kennels too so someone has to be there all the time....

My RS is great, no matter how much I progress I couldn't bear to leave, I couldn't attend team training for a while (personal issues, dad hospitilized due to heart attack, my heart condition getting really bad) and I was really missing ponies. One morning I had a text off my dad saying could I check the shed I went outside my RI was there with 2 ponies and a hat for me so we could go out hacking.

Also there is a lovely lady on my yard who has helped me massivly with Beauty and Foxy. If she hadn't been there when Beauty got trapped in barbed wire I don't know what I would've done

I love my yard too - the yo and his wife are loveley, live on site and are so friendly and helpful.
The other liveries are all nice too - no bitchiness, all are helpful nice and friendly.
Only down side - the hacking isnt great - have to cross a busy road to get anywhere - but i wouldnt move for the world after some of the horror stories ive read

I'm always singing the praises of my instructor, saddler, farrier, physio, vet and YO :D

So you lot - here you go, and Thank You!!! You're brill :D :D :D

I'm at a lovely yard with my boys. A farmyard, complete with all sorts of crazy animals, quaint old fashioned stables and an extremely friendly YO who can't do enough to help. Close to my home, good value and nice hacking. Lovin' it! :)

I love my yard because my horse loves it! He is so happy there and that makes me a happy owner!

When I bought him I was on a fantastic small competition livery yard, 2 arenas, great stables, competitions and instruction on-site, great social life with other liveries. My old mare had been happy there. BUT my gelding never settled, there was too much happening, everything was spooky, not enough turnout.

We moved to a quiet farm, to join a friend who's aged mare died so needed a companion for her gelding. The boys are best mates, have a huge field, 24hr turnout, cosy stables for winter. Her house overlooks the field so they are always safe. My horse has gradually turned from monster into gentle, kind, sensitive, brave, all-round happy chap. We have no arena, we turn up at shows looking like swamp donkeys, and we don't get to ride as much as I'd like in the winter, but it's worth it for a happy horse!!! Oh and the hacking is fantastic, beach one way, moors the other.

I LOVE the yard Kelly is on! :)
Granted it is a large yard but I keep myself to myself and the few people I know I can trust and don't get into any trouble :)
Kelly knows and loves it and my YO is fantastic - she gives any advice we need and kindly allows me to have lessons on her horses as Kelly has been out of action and I miss it!
We have fantastic hacking, a lovely set up with big fields and most of all its very much home for our girls.
It is nice to hear from people who like where they are :)
