I've given notice to leave our current yard, and, sadly, things have gone from great to awful in a matter of hours.

Our horse hasn't settled as well as we had hoped at our current yard and I feel the lack of turnout is a contributing factor but is something neither I or the YO can change, so have made my decision to leave to go to a yard where we can have all year around turnout. I've also found somewhere much closer to home which is a huge bonus.

Current yard is beautiful, fabulous facilities, lovely YO, or so I thought, but it's just not worked for us.

I discovered our horse hadn't been fed his dinner this evening as is and has always been the routine, he's fed along with all other horses.

I'm on part livery but make up all feeds, haynets, etc so it's a case of popping nets and feed in when the others are fed.

I thought that maybe it was an oversight somehow but was ignored on the group chat when I said he hadn't had his dinner, and upon looking at socials I realised I had been removed, so it now appears I'm in bad books and as a result the usual services, or dinner at least, may now not be given. This isn't ideal as our horse is used to this routine and was clearly upset at feeding time, as witnessed by two other liveries who didn't realise he was meant to be fed.

I just don't know how to approach this.
I've never been in a situation like this before and am stumped.

I'm paid up for this month but will see if I can leave earlier, although this isn't ideal as double livery for this month will be in excess of 1k but I'll have to dig deep for our horses sake, if this is the way things are going to be.

The current yard is an hour round trip so I'm going to message again first thing to ask if he's going to be fed, and if not, I'll have to jiggle things around at work to get there in the afternoon and then back again in the evening.

What should I say and/or do? I'm feeling a bit helpless and at the mercy of YO.

If you can take the financial hit & new yard can accept you early I’d honestly just leave ASAP. If they’re prepared to deliberately not feed your horse in order to cause distress then it would worry me what else they may be prepared to do when you’re not around.

People who initially appear sane & rational can behave in some totally unbelievable ways when they think you’ve slighted them.

It is not the norm to suddenly stop providing services & immediately remove you from yard messaging groups the second you give your notice (normal protocol if leaving on what should be good terms would be to only remove you after you’ve left)

Leave asap and then get your month's money back, as YO broke the contract, through the small claims court and when you are successful, publicise what has happened everywhere you can.
It is not 100% clear, but from what OP wrote I believe he/she is responsible to feed in the evening but, up to now, it has been more convenient to make the net/feed up and YO has been putting in when the others have been done.

I would still be furious that my horse had been left with no feed/ What about the net? I'd have been up there quicksticks!

I would be there this morning 1st thing to see what was happening. If I was not satisfied with their reply, I too would be away from the yard today. My horse would be the 1st priority and I would hate to leave one of mine somewhere that could deliberately leave them stressed. If the contract had been broken then yes, I would also ask for the money back. If not, then I'd take the financial hit.

I would ask one of the other liveries to show me their contract if there were any doubt. Take a photo. Presumably all liveries are on the same contract.

Can you pay a freelancer to do evening duties for you until you leave? Provided you warn them that the reception is likely to be frosty, and also ask them not to leave until the bucket food is eaten. I'm afraid with the level of pettiness shown, I would also padlock the haynet closed and to the ring, to make sure the hay is not going to be taken out when the freelance is gone.

I'm there every evening. This is afternoon feeds as we're not allowed to feed seperately to the rest of the yard, so they have to do it. It's not an ask from me, it's the rules, so I'm a bit miffed as to why he's not being fed.

I think I'd struggle to find a freelancer at such short notice and also there is an access gate to the yard and I would not be allowed to give a key.

I'm stuck.

Get out of there asap. And then I would spread the word far and wide about how this yard has behaved to your horse since you gave notice. That is why I would go to court, so that it isn't gossip that you are repeating.

Also if you try phoning and the YO doesn't answer then ring from another number, say your work phone (if allowed) or a partner or friend phone that the YO won't know.

You can then ask about the feed being given and at the same time request the return of your copy of the livery contract so that you have the evidence for a small claims court action for the livery money.

I hope you manage to move early.

If new yard can accommodate you I would also be leaving ASAP. Someone who is quite happy to see a horse suffer, even marginally in this case, will not be trustworthy around your horse IMO. Your lovely yard owner is far from lovely, do not trust her.
I've spoken to the new yard and they're happy for us to move as soon as we have bloods back, even if it's late in the evening.

Just need to get through the next few days. Somehow. 😞
