XC schooling, an injury & a question re overreach boots?

Fantastic pics, photographer not bad either!

Re the injury: my boy had the same injury a few years back in a team chase. The odd thing was that he was wearing rubber OR boots and there wasn't a mark on them. Once back at the lorry he was quite lame and we had to get a vet there and then to clean and give bute. (he's always been a wuss).

It became infected within the week and he had to have a course of antibiotics but it did clear up and the hoof grew down normally. His was a split right on the coronet band just to the side of the heel.

I'm mystified as to how he managed to do it and we wondered if he had given himself such a "punch" that the coronet band had split. I now rarely use OR boots as it seems to me that they can't always prevent these injuries anyway.

Brilliant photos looks like great day out. I use "new" overreach boots, they have been brilliant, fit perfectly and not too long. I wouldn't go xc without them!

Silly girl!

Mine did something similar last year, and I'm afraid it took longer than 14 days but his was higher up and more through his coronet band.

I did have him on box rest for over a week and bandaged it. I used Manuka Honey (hopefully spelt right!) just the supermarkets home brand and worked really well. Could keep slapping that on rather than special vet hydro gels (which I did for first few days and cost £££s)

:)

My old TB had an injury like this so I now use (and hate) OR boots.

My vet packed it with Aloe Vera gel (All the rage at the time!) and it was clean, healed and he was sound in about a week.

Fingers crossed Pip's heal's as well.

Leviathan, it was boots like those you use which brought my mare down and nearly ended her career. I personally think rubber O/R boots, which have velcro panels are a serious risk & should be withdrawn from the market. I especially hate it if they are even slightly too big, and am boringly evangelical at Pony Club when I see children trotting along on ponies with rubber and velcro O/R boots flapping away.

I also question really how much protection a few mil of rubber can actually offer.... This is a general question (not directed at anyone btw) and one I do ponder, I suspect they provide zero protection in reality from a really damaging strike.

Allergic to them? do you mean the rubber or hates wearing them?

I must say I wont do cross country without them.

I would get neoprene ones if allergic to rubber.
I must say these are my favourite ones as velcro is hidden between sandwich rubber , thus does not get wet and come undone
very rare to get colour ones tho i have blue ones
not cheap but IMO the best

these in blue or yellow
impossible to find now

.

My other mare used OR boots for years for turn out and work mainly neophrene. However laterally her heels have become v sensitive to any material used and her heels go weepy and sore after a few uses. Therefore I have stopped using them on her which is an equal nuisance.

Thanks for the links will do a comparison of all later and see what will best protect the injury.

these?

cheap enough to cut the neoprene shorter if necessary too.

I use those ^^^ or these

(Kieffer short ones)

Won't let a shod horse leave the ground without O-R boots on.
Hope she heals fast, looks great!

Ouch, hope she heals fast!

I use Professional Choice o/r boots and have found them very good- very short and close fitting and don't turn or flap.

I have also used normal rubber ones and just cut the bottom inch or so off the length so they fit tightly.

Would be interested in seeing the results of your research!

Try km elite no turn boots in a medium, they rubbed my tb on first wear but are awesome now and only just touch the ground. Pip is looking good, that bounce was very well tackled!

photos are stunning :D looks a good xc session!! shame about the injury :( hope the recovery is speedy!

as for the OR boots - maybe cut them shorter as others have said :)
