Re the injury: my boy had the same injury a few years back in a team chase. The odd thing was that he was wearing rubber OR boots and there wasn't a mark on them. Once back at the lorry he was quite lame and we had to get a vet there and then to clean and give bute. (he's always been a wuss).
It became infected within the week and he had to have a course of antibiotics but it did clear up and the hoof grew down normally. His was a split right on the coronet band just to the side of the heel.
I'm mystified as to how he managed to do it and we wondered if he had given himself such a "punch" that the coronet band had split. I now rarely use OR boots as it seems to me that they can't always prevent these injuries anyway.
