Just out of interest, how many people feed bran?

[/ QUOTE ] Not me, mainly because of the poor calcium/phosphorus ratio.

Hi
I am going to be trying bran mash this winter with my very good doer. I am wondering what else to feed her though with it as she is on limited hay and lives in. Any suggestions?

Haha I can't believe I read the whole thread either!

In answer to the original question - I fed mine a scoop of bran with a scoop of hi fi lite and a scoop of fibrebeet three times a day whilst he was on box rest after his colic/laminitis period. This was on advice from the vet's. I don't feed it now as was told it has a laxative effect, whether this is true or not doesn't matter too much as I don't feed it to him normally.

well i remember at a show several years ago there was a particular horse that was very skinny and was the main topic of conversation.anyway it came to light that the owner was new to horses and its feed had been bran.
i think the owner was taken aside and given advice.i saw the horse at a later date and it had gained weight.

i dont feed a mash
but i do add to hifi lite(plus topsepc antilam) for my lami mare for more fibre without any calories.i add in limestone flour too.been great-hasnt upset her feet or put weight on her.

my god i cant believe i read this whole thing.

i feed bran occasionally - if my mare needs medication she wont eat it from anything else other than a hot bran mash, and with antibiotics etc being so expensive i cant afford for her to throw her food/meds all over the floor in a tantrum

also i am a soft touch and if she's been out working in the cold all day (mock hunting in the pouring rain for instance) then i will give her a small one she goes mad for it so i think its a nice treat.

she is 14 so cant say one every now and then would do her bones much harm, and as for just feeding occasionally/you should always intergrate new feed slowly not feed something suddenly... i know my horse she has a cast iron stomach and she gets such a small bran mash it hasnt and is unlikely to cause her upset.

my YM comes from a hunting background and she feeds occasionally same as me, so makes it fine by me as she knows her stuff - yes some things done in the past are wrong and modern science does sometimes prove so, however mixing old and modern methods work well for me and my pony. we put limestone powder in with it but not sure if its really worth it when they only get 6 a year etc, but do so anyway just because i know you are meant to
