I met Rummy, petted him and gave him polos! He did a public appearance at a riding school near us. Several years later I met a girl who'd been working at that riding school and she had loads of photos of Rummy, wouldn't give me any of them tho'!

Silent King did indeed die, following an accident in the trailer, where his hind leg went through the floor, and he damaged his hock so badly he had to be PTS ... :(

Glad someone knows of him lol:) I have lots of photos of him in my tackroom and everyone asks about him. It's a shame he was before mass TV coverage, otherwise I think he would have a lot of votes on this thread:)
 
Another vote for Anglezarke. (I have form when it comes to big chestnut horses with dodgy conformation!)

And for Aldaniti too. I still get a lump in my throat when I see that National, and was in tears within the first few minutes of Champions - the beginning with the horse being galloped along the horizon and that music is choking enough, but knowing that horse is Aldaniti himself.....

Franke Sloothaak was my idol - I used to go to HOYS every year when it was still at Wembley and shout for him. And Mark Todd was, still is and will always be god of eventing.
 
Hi everyone. I've been lurking a long time and been thinking about joining up and this great thread has winkled me out of my shell :D

So pleased to see my personal fave Anglezarke - his rivalry with Ryan's son in the 80s was brill.

Also pleased to see Apollo popping up - I think he was Geoff Glazzard's horse? I remember Geoff Glazzard kindly giving me an autograph - big thumb's up

Hero rider was definitely Caroline Bradley - I have the book " Caroline Bradley, a tribute". RIP Caroline died aged 37

Lucinda Greene was and still is awesome

These days I am a big fan of Tim Stockdale - saw him ringside at Hickstead a couple of years ago. What a polite, kind and superb horseman

I was very luck when i was a student at equine college to get the chance to go to spain with David Broome and his son on the sunshine tour for my 6 week work experience placement i met Geoff Glazzard and and became good friends with his groom whilst i was out there I met others there too but can't remember their names xx
 
Any remember Beau Supreme ridden by Derek Ricketts. Seem to remember him breaking his leg on live telly and the horror of knowing what happened when the lights went down - HOYS or Royal International I think. Slightly off thread but it's so good to remember all these brilliant horses.
 
Double-choc-lad - wasn't that when the did an indoor derby at Wembley and they had constructed a small indoor bank and it broke?

This thread is really nice in remembering all these horses from the past.
 
It has to be Penwood Forge Mill. I used to beg my mum to let me stay up and watch HOYS when he was competing and will him to win. Also, Stroller was inspirational and I wanted to be woman who rode Psalm (was it Anne Moore?). Also anything that Lucinda Green rode was fantastic and I also loved Merely-A-Monarch.

I also remember the furore that Harvey Smith caused with his V sign - he was fabulous as well. All these names are so evocative of growing up as a horse mad, but horseless kid. I used to dream of riding around Hickstead or Badminton and curse the fact that my parents couldnt afford to buy and keep a horse. Happy days.
 
Milton was absolutely my first love: a gentleman and a great competitor. Have always loved the Whittakers, but John's my favourite, probably because of Milton.

Jeff Billington opened my old yard when I was 9... absolute ledge. Proof that round is a perfectly acceptable riding shape! lol.
 
All my old favourites have already been mentioned :)

I used to love Silent King - I was so upset when he died. I also met Red Rum when he opened a bookies shop! I saw him at the traffic lights standing in his horsebox through a very small window - when I called his name and he nickered to me and my little 8 year old self (or however old I was) was over the moon.
 
Red Rum meant a lot to me, especially reading his story of how he was pretty much written off with health problems, to then come through and win the national three times. I was in tears when he died.

Sefton was also another horse that I loved. I had a book all about him that I bought as a small child just because it had a picture of a horse on the front! The pictures inside weren't so nice :(

There were of course the other ones that we followed, like Dollar Girl and Milton. I was horrified when talking to a 16yo last year who had no idea who Red Rum was, and had no real knowledge of who Milton was.... "didn't he win the olympics or something once?"......
 
Has to be between Milton and Ryan's Son Loved the way Milkton's tail flowed out behind him ( and the way he jumped of course) - and loved the way Ryan's Son flicked out his back legs after he'd gone over a jump.
 
There's been so many over the years, all special ,all sharing their own brand of magic. The show jumpers Stroller, Pslam,Sportsman, Penwood Forge Mill, Ryans Son, Milton. The racehorses Desert Orchid, Arkle, Dawn Run, Red Rum.
The eventers, Priceless, Murphy Himself .
Sefton and Echo, so badly injured by the Hyde Park bomb. My first pony, Kirsty, she taught me so much about the value of patience.

Nothing captures our hearts so much as a brave horse.

There was a lovely grey ridden by Alwin Schockemohle too. Cant think of his name! He was lovely!

I adored Milton, he was my number 1 hero but others that I loved were Red Rum, Its Otto, Singspiel and Pilsudski, Weihaiwej, Blyth Tait's Delta and Ready Teddy, Welton Houdini, Abbervail Dream, I'm sure there are loads more that I can't remember off the top of my head though!
