So, how do you all muck out and what are the timings?

I have been forced by my own laziness onto deep litter in the yard I am keeping Buster at…I could either dig out the entire bed or use it, and chose the latter. I am now utterly converted!

Currently, his bed is white (!!!!!) , which I have never had with the full muck out once a day method I am used too! I basically, take out all the poo and any wet I see on the surface…so my routine goes like this.

Get to yard
Put pony in field
Skip out
Pull banks down, either re build banks or add shavings if needed
Water
Hay
Feed
Get pony from field
Give pony breakfast
Brush (flick) pony off.
Make feeds and refill water

It takes me 1/2 hr max. He is then in for a couple of hours till the others go out (I get to yard at 5.45)

What are your mucking out routine methods and how long do they take?

I have two on box rest and its goes something like this....

Get to yard,
Tie both up on the yard
Muck both out
Do Water
Do Hay
Sweep yard
Take PJ's off and hang up in stables
Put Coryn's legs wraps on
Put ponies back to bed (wish I could go back to bed!)
Give them both their horsey footballs
All done in about 1/2 hour.

Arrive at yard 6.20- feed breakfast x3-

Horses on shavings (2) take big trug in stable and pick poo/hay up whilst they are eating their breakfast.

Put horses out-

Finish shavings beds, sweep up, haynets and water

Muck out horse number 3 (rubber matting/straw) leaving matting to dry off during day.

Dash home- shower and work.

After work - put Straw bed down, haynet and water that stable.

Bring in/groom/feed- make up haynets and breakfasts for morning etc

Go home- open bottle of wine.

My morning routine is:

Get down yard
Feed stable block - 4/5 horses.
Tie horse up outside stable while he eats breakfast
Empty and clean water bucket and leave at tap to refill
Take poos out of straw bed and any obvious wet on top
Remake banks
Level off and flatten bed - add any more straw as necessary
Sweep front of stable and outside stable area
Put water bucket back in stable
Make haynet and hang in up
Clean feed buckets and leave to one side
Change horse's rugs
Turn him and another horse out
Go home to get changed for work.

This normally takes me 45min in the morning. I skip out all week and do a big muck out once a week at the weekend - that can take me half hour alone to do.

ETS I do everything in the morning so when I come down the yard after work I only have to ride, make feeds and tuck Bane up for bed

(He is already bought in from field for me by a friend)

Its VERY unlucky having two on box rest, all I seem to do is muck out!! I did teach last night, which was a very welcome break!

I have mine at home, so my normal routine for my two is

get up at 6am
fed the girlie her breakfast
change rugs
put both in field
skip out both boxes (only skip out during the week and do a full muck out at weekends)
fill water
empty wheelbarrow
fill haynets and hang up for evening

normally takes about 30 - 35 minutes depending on how dirty they are, if it is a crappy day I keep them in and they get skipped out morning and evening.

Get to yard
Say morning to horses and retrive feed skips out of stables
Make up feed and give them to two hungry mouths.
Take off stable rugs and put on turnout rugs / omars boots.
Put Omars headcollar on and pick out feet
Put hovis' headcollar on and pick out feet.
Lead out hovis.
Persuade Hovis to stand still whilst undoing Omars door
Lead the two of them out.
stand for a minute trying to get them on the correct sides of me.
walk down drive.
Reassure Omar the hedge isn't going to eat him
walk down drive.
Stop hovis eating the hedge
Walk down drive.
Convince Omar the gate isn't going to kill him
Open gate
Convince hovis I haven't got treats
Try to shut gate.
Put hovis back into field after he trys to follow me out.
Go back to stables. Look at mess. Swear.
Muck out hovis, remove all poo and wet bedding.
Pull banks down and build hovis a new bed.
Empty barrow
Open Omars door.
Cry.
Muck out Omar, remove all poo and wet bedding.
Pull banks down and build Omar a new bed
Empty barrow. Drink cup of tea in hot mug that is now cold.
Go home and start work.
Takes me about an hour door to door.

Morning routine - up at 5.45, quick cup of coffee and amble out to yard.

Tack up horse and tie up outside whilst full muck out, make up haynet for evening etc. Have to tie horse up outside as stable so tiny can't muck out with him in there!!

Ride by 6.20. Back home by 8ish. Rug and turnout with breakfast. Leave for work at 8.30!!

Well mine is on 5 day livery as I'm only there at weekends.

While he's out during the day my routine goes something like this:

8am arrive at the yard, put Dibbs in corale area, scrub out buckets, muck out (fully muck out woodchip bed, takes about 15 mins) leave bed up. Do hay/haylege and fill up water. Groom and ride, rug up, turn out.

5pm get back to yard, bring in and pick out feet, change rugs if nec, pull bed down. Make and give dinner. Done by 5.30, later if I spend time cuddling/fussing him and talking to my friends at the yard.

I get there and THE most important thing to do first, by mine and more importantly their standards, is their food. It's already been made the night before so I just mix and chuck it in.

So I get there, feed them.
Remove both stable rugs while they are eating, and replace with T/Os if necessary, fastening as many buckles as possible while their heads are down!
I put G's hay in a cattle manger (without plug) and rinse it with the hose.
I then get L's hay and stick that in his haybar.
Then I pull out their water buckets and empty them, put them by the tap.
Then I get all my mucking out tools, barrow etc.
I then sweep the yard quite thoroughly.
By now they should have finished their food so I put G out first, then come back and put L out.
As I am walking back from the field, I put the tap on to fill the first of 3 buckets.
As that bucket fills, I make a start on G's stable (aquamax), throwing the bed up against the walls so that compacted wet and the poos all fall down and I remove it all. I usually have to make trips to the tap to swap the buckets round while I am doing G's stable. I then pull his bed down, and as he is on mats, I sweep anything at the front to the back.
I then pull G's bucket into his stable. His stable takes in the region of 20 minutes because it cannot be deep littered at all.
Then I make a start on L's stable - straw! I pull all the manky stuff to the front, including poos and visible wet (I deep litter the rest), and then scoop it all up into the barrow. The straw only takes about 5 minutes to muck out.
I scoop up the stuff I'd swept up into a pile off the yard, and put that in the barrow, then off to the muck heap.
On my way back, I fill my big barrow with fresh straw and take it to L's bed, flick it around a bit and fluff up his hay.
I then drag both his water trugs at the same time, to his stable.
I make sure both their doors are hooked open to allow them to air.
I then pick up the feed buckets and go next door to make up their night time feeds.
I run through all the jobs in my head to make sure they are done, leave any notes for my husband who usually does the night routine, and then I go.

I am there about 90 minutes if I am not lunging or riding. So I am not the quickest, but I am very thorough and Lanky can take anywhere up to half an hour to eat his feed!

Get to yard at 07.30 after 12 hour night shift, feed 14 horses, change my boys rug put him out in field, muck him out, leave bed up,do hay, water, dinner, sweep yard, home for 08.00 walk dog bed by 09.30 and then to sleep phew!!!

the girls turn tabs out for me in the morn so
about 4 30pm get up yard
fill haynet/water
make feeds
muck out
bring tabs in
check her for cuts etc
put her to bed and throw her feed in
and go!
takes me about 30mins (without riding) on a good day but usually 45 mins if i chat a lot
with riding add another hour to that

Make Vay's brekfast and give it to her in the stable
while shes eating I will change her rugs and put her T/O boots on
Turn Out
Rinse out feed buckets
Muck out - Shes on mats and shes filthy so I usually end up taking out most of the bedding, sweep the mats and then pull down what tiny amount of clean bedding is left and add some more clean shavings.
Get her evening haynet ready.
I dont need to do water as she has an automatic drinker.

Thats it, although it does take me about 40mins because her stable is always so dirty and im not happy untill its immaculate again!

Retieve J's remaining hay and put in the field for the daytime.
Do waters
Sweep Yard

All done by 7.15

If riding then J just gets mucked out while he is in and then I go and have a quick breakfast and then come out and ride

Not riding at the moment cos horsey is on her holidays for the next few weeks and I've given up trying to back my youngster in the mud!!!

Get to yard at 6.50am (ish!)
Grab feed, rugs, headcollar, rubber gloves from storage area and traipse over to box.
Snog beast then feed.
Grab wheelbarrow, fork + broom, load wheelbarrow with hay and take to stable.
Change rugs then turn-out.
Skip-out, sweep box, hay, water and sweep yard.
Wash feed bowls out and take them back to storage area whilst pushing barrow.
Empty barrow, then make up feeds for pm and following morning.
Take barrow, fork, broom and evening feed back to other yard.

This all takes me about an hour as everything is bloody miles away from everything else; feed and rugs are stored between field and box, then barrow and fork are between box and hay barn.

My box is also about 13 x 16 so there's a lot of bed to sort out!
