really nosey post but what has everyone done today if they rode?
and what was your aim?

here was my school plan/session-

my basic aim was getting her back relaxed, inside hinds underneath her and more constistant and light in the contact. simple basic stuff.

our school was a bit hard as we had a frost/minus temps so we did our entire 40min schooling session in walk

started off with a few circuits of walk on long rein to let her limber up and snort at a few scarey things in the bushes!

then did a 20m circle on each rein, then a 15m circle on each rein at A and C on a fairly loose rein asking her to just drop her nose a little.

then gathered her up a little to a long and low outline to get her back to come up and relax on the 20 and 15m circles at B and E

and we did some flexation work on the circle and outside track (inside and outside bend without coming off 2 tracks) working on some slight bends and exaggerated bends.

then we did some 2x easy leg yeilds each way from the c'line to the track without asking much in the way of crossing legs at first.

asked for a little more flexion and really round and down on a 10m cicle at A and C each rein with a FWLR across the diagnal between them.

then did some leg yields from the 3/4 to 3/4 line both ways, asking for more stepping under with the hinds.

then we went large and did some shoulder fore along the track with a 10m circle at B/E on each rein. changed rein with turn out the forehand.

rode a 15x15 square on each rein asking for turn about the forehand in each corner with a FWLR across short diagnal between.

then down c'line leg yield to join the track just before B/E concentrating on getting her stepping right under and maintaining a very slight bend. at B/E, a 10m circle asking for a deeper outline. then a 3 track shoulder in along the track.
then at the corner asking for a traver along the short side, on 3 tracks
changed rein FWLR across from E/B then repeated exercise on the other rein

we then had a walk large with a 10m 1/2 circle change of rein in a longer lower outline and she was really taking the contact down and her back was lovely.

she came back into a deep outline as soon as i asked and her contact was very nice. we did a 4 track shoulder in along the long side on each rein, changed rein doing a 10circle at the corner.

the we did shoulder in on a 20m circle and i spiralled it down and changed the bend to do a few steps of a walk piroutte on each rein.

then we came up into a competition outline and she stayed lovely and soft and consistant and we practiced halting at every other marker on the track then on the 3/4lines.

i allowed her more rein and we did some gentle leg yields from the c'line to the track on each rein.

2x 20m circles on each rein.

then we walked once on each rein in FWLR round the school.

and a big pat!

then we had a thorough grooming session whilst she munched some hay and i gave her back a massage with the hand held massage thingie
rug on
little feed of chaff/nuts and then thrown out for the day in the field!

Hav'nt ridden yet but will school as roads here still look slippery! I will hopefully concentrate on getting him relaxed and practise shoulder in a leg yield. Will hopefully do plenty of canter if my back holds up!!

Mine is being rebacked so plan for this afternoon is long reining, teaching acceptance of the bit as a slowing command, as i never felt he really got it last year. Steering he's great but he almost pushes into the rein aid. He's great off the voice and body so am trying to improve his association of voice with hand and wean off voice completely. So transitions, stretching and forwardsness for today...and every day!

i was supose to be hunting but was called off, which is a shame as have been looking foward to this one all season! so went for a hack for a couple of hours followed by a pampering sesion for my girl to make up for lack of hunting!

i started off in the school, but was quite hard and rutty so went out for half hour round to see in laws, bright sun shine so roads were fine. my boy got whole load of carrots frtom in laws then we hacked back

I had my first jumping lesson. My aim was to get archie jumping better and just generally imprrove my riding and jumping. Fell off once, but had a really good lesson!

I had a lesson early this morning, worked on flatwork and jumping, was good but i felt we could have done better.
Will do something with the youngster later, probably long-rein him.

Re-habbing (sp right?) my mare after tear in DDFT so 40min hack out in the sun just walking on the roads. So nice to get out again after so long on box rest. Shes doing great and very chilled out.!!

Instructor was away today, so we schooled without him:

Hack to riding school on long rein in walk/trot to get loosened up.

First part of session on long rein: concentrating on forward, free walk and trot, with transitions between paces/halt.

Large rounds of the school, going for longer steps along long sides. Semi-successfully.

Some shoulder-in in walk, from E/B to the short side, followed by trot transition after the corner. Purpose to get him more off inside leg, and not getting all stopped-up during the SI.

Then I put down some poles: trot poles just off B, and more trot poles on a corner (near K). Started just trotting over them concentrating on keeping good rhythm before/after. Then added canter transition after the corner poles. Find this helps, because he is trotting better because of the poles, so he can pick up the canter better and quicker.

Then added a ToF at X. So pattern went (on right rein) ToF, trot, trot around school over straight poles, then over corner poles, canter transition, canter a big circle, return to trot near B, continue in trot over corner poles, walk.

On the left rein, the pattern was a little different, to account for the asymmetrical setup. The point was to get him thinking about lots of things in succession, on staying up and forward through his transitions (especially canter-trot), and on not anticipating canter every time after the corner poles (thence the walk bit).

Then cool down.

Still have SJ tonight on a school horse, will report later...

Ooh good post!
I went for a hack - no real aim except to get back alive!
I will start doing some more serious schooling on hacks from now on though ready for this year.

i had a lesson at gross o' clock (8am) so was up at 6am to feed and muck out 5, and turn out 4 before lesson!

Star (5yo ex racer) has been working on lateral work and changes over winter, and hasnt competed since Oct 09 so today was all about basics, making sure all the i's are dotted and t's crossed before we get back in to competition mode in a couple of weeks.

started off walking on a long rein, pulling my leg and dropping my thigh down a few times to make sure i was *plugged in* whilst he warmed his muscles up.

picked him up in to a low/deep/round outline and woked on pushing the quarters either in or out on the circle, but quite a large angle so he was walking nearly totally sideways, with just slight flexion.

up in to trot in deep outline and some large circles and then shallow sweeping leg yields to get him loose in hips and shoulders.

quick walk break then picked him up in to competition frame and worked on a circle going collected-medium trot and back whilst varying the flexion to inside and outside, so basically suppling work making sure he didnt drop the inside shoulder or drop behind the leg.

then worked on shoulder and in and renvers in trot to gain control of the outside shoulder.

walk break.

up in to canter and worked on me for a few mins-making sure i dont look down or tense up my knees as we go up the transition.

then went medium-collected canter, and back to medium, on a circle, making sure i was riding from the outside shoulder and if needed putting him slightly renvers in canter on the left rein to correct his crookedness.

finished off doing walk pirouettes at B/E and then picking up counter canter from walk, doing CC round the short side, direct back to walk and then a walk P the other way. was a naughty mother and did a change each way, because, well we can!!!!so then did a counter canter each way to check he was on the aids for my CC in novice tests, he was, phew!!!

did a circuit each way in his *competition trot* and then some big circles long and low really stretching down in trot and then walk to finish.

he was such a good boy and is so grown up for a 5yo, bless him.

luckili, despite a hard frost my arena was ok-rubber topped.

I took my just-started boy round the 10 acre field, but only for 20 minutes, as the ground is too damned hard here, and the school was worse. I think I'll have to leave it till things warm up. Grrrrr

My ride was something of a milestone.

Jazz hasn't been ridden since before Christmas due to badly fitting saddle (which I didn't want to use as I'm not the lightest person in the world anymore

) bad weather and generally feeling depressed. This week was supposed to be my big "riding week" as I'm on half term but I dislocated and sprained my shoulder badly last Saturday.

Anyway, saddler came out on Tuesday and fitted a beautiful GFS brown GP saddle which looked made-to-measure on Jazzy and said I could have a couple of weeks to trial it.

I was slightly apprehensive of riding (not least because of the stupid shoulder injury, but also Jazz is quick at the best of times) but tacked him up, with some help from YO (she put saddle on for me as J is 17.2hh!

Took him upto mounting block where he stood still first rime (he's known to swing his quarters out) then waited calmly what other liveries checked saddle was still ok with my large posterior sitting in it. Asked Jazzy to walk on which he did very steadily (if I HAVE to!) then went round the block (but minding the ice in places).

He got quicker coming home (only out for 10 mins or so) but did nothing faster than a jog and there was no tension in the reins at all (which was good for the shoulder!) - I managed to control the pace just using seat and thighs! I was really impressed!

Planning much longer walking ride tomorrow!!!! Yippee!!!

I went out for a hack with my friend / sharer...........I rode a young horse just back into work, aim was to stay on and get him going forward and he was a star, although it was funny riding him with his new full set of shoes......( never had back shoes on before)..... so I am just back home now debating a nice glass of Rose!!

I went on a lovely relaxing hack, Norman was a very good boy and had a few trots but not any canters as the ground was too hard. I tryed to concentrate on my position and getting Norm working properly, as I'm trying to get him from a hairy hippo

to a gleaming horsey in time for spring/summer.

Moby and I did a 2 and a half hour hack, accompanying a youngster for some of the way as a confidence giver, then when we were alone, we did some fast work, which woke us both up. I am trying to keep my legs still and not nag him when he is working nicely, and encourage him to be long and low, especially in walk and trot. I'd say 98% successful. Lovely day, super ride.

I went xc schooling

. Had a really good time and my friend got some fab photos, will put them in photo gallery when photobucket starts cooperating.

Actually really fed up! Was meant to ride this morning, but school frozen and roads icy, also time short as farrier came and had to get back for haircut, so had planned to ride this afternoon instead. Got to the yard to find Barney haring about in the field, then discovered the hunt was going past the top of the village. He got more and more wound up, and ended up jumping the 4 foot gate into the arena! continued haring about in there for a while, and when I eventually caught him he was dripping with sweat, so I spent the rest of the afternoon washing him off and trying to settle him. Left him rushing from his stable door to his feed and back, so have had to ask a friend to pop in and check him later (he's 14 miles away). Hoping he's calmed down by tomorrow, and dreading having to muck him out. So no riding for me today!

Went for a nice walk and trot hack this morning. Mare refrained from jogging for once and got complemented by a stranger over how shiny she was so I was

Went to do BSJA at Bishop Burton - only did 80 cms mind but first trip out since Nov so thought would start off small! hehe (plus i am chicken!)

Cleaned out lockup, took delivery of 20 bales of hay with help.

Then after hot choccy gave him a good grooming, did my saturday morning ride, (as per video on other posts), he was a good sausage

oh yea, a lady gave him a fuss at the roadside for a few mins

Hacked out on my own. Corroy was being suprisingly well behaved, had a canter down disused railway line. Then I met two girls with pink tops on a trampline next to the hedge, apparently Corroy can passage!

I took Fergus out for the first time in a month or so. We hit the grass and he bucked constantly for a whole field. glad i shortened my stirrups! its very surreal standing over a bucking horse..hes going tomorrow, for reasons related to that! i turned him up a steep hill and he finally stopped

bit of an adrenaline rush after but wont be doing it again!
