    Teaching your ex-racer to jump

I've just begun on my adventure with my new one. Here's his race info: https://www.nzracing.co.nz/RaceInfoSearch.aspx?q=avistar#horse I bought him end of Feb and began riding him March. Have been focusing on dressage as a young skinny tb is not strong enough to be able to jump well/high/for...

    Tips for backing horse off

First thing I do is lift my chin up 2 strides before fence - helps to bring your upper body back and can help them wait.

Calmers that you don't have to use everyday?

I've used this before: http://www.horselands.co.nz/product/NPC-Mag-Eze-Liquid-100139.htmx and it's a weekly dose - liquid into a feed. They've never noticed a taste and is competition legal. I'm sure there's similar where you are!

Advert phrases that put you off

My big annoyance is when I'm looking for a young/green thing to bring on (so looking in the cheap sections) and see a nice jumping picture only to click on the ad to find out it's a 20yo retired due to injury paddock mate. Use a suitable photo for your horse! I think it's great that they were...

Outside Rein on the 'Good' Side

I was taught that the 'inside hand only' gives pressure, the same as you, but recently I have been taught the opposite. How I'm viewing it now is that so long as I'm staying consistent I can choose whichever works best for me.

List of handy training links and etc

Hello all, Apologies if this has done before (I did a quick search but am still new to this site), but I want to start keeping track of all the great articles and guides that I read to do with competing, training, healthcare, whatever etc. So I will be posting some stuff which I find really...

Very random refusing? How to address...

Can you have someone on the ground when you ride at home? And mimic what happens at the shows i.e have a jump around, then alter the jumps, then jump again. This way she's more comfortable as in her home environment so maybe braver but also lets her know that it's ok when the fences change...

Mini Dressage Report - First Timer

Nice work Sasquatch! Did seem to be a harsh judge but you get the best feedback that way. I absolutely think you should do at least a few more. You will be far more relaxed at the next one I think and that may come through on your scores, but whose complaining? 6th is great, I love purple...

Someone Wants To Ride My Pony

No, this seems weird. Perhaps I'm very possessive but my horse is mine! I care for them, I love them, I ride them. Wouldn't like them to be muddled in the slightest with another rider. And if they're getting a lesson, they're 99% going to be novice. IF the situation brought about...

yard owner likes to talk... about customers.

You're so welcome! From what I've heard about liveries and the few different places that I've been it does seem to be common. Although I'm sure some places are worse than others? Perhaps a smaller livery situation may work? For me I tend to avoid as I ride a lot earlier than anyone else...

yard owner likes to talk... about customers.

I'm not really sure I can help. Sure it's probably unprofessional if the YO is bagging on their paying clients, but in one form or another I think this happens from time to time where ever you go. Nice that you've been taken into their confidence but I can see you're uncomfortable. Change...

    5* vetting !

I read in a training book to simulate injections by using a rubber band, and a pencil. Use the blunt end of the pencil to pull the band against, place on neck and then let ping. Start with soft ones and follow up with a food reward straight away. Could potentially work or would be an...

    Fast canter for jumping

Circle work before you jump, lots of transitions. While jumping initially start with a cavaletto in front of your jump so they cannot rush into the fence as much. Sit up and give with your hands as they take off.

    Thoroughbred doing Working Hunter???

Well what's the scoring breakdown for working hunter where you are? I believe here 'type' is a 30% component. If your lovely sounding horse lacks slightly here, you can still go for gold with the other 70% worth of marks that incorporate manners and talent. :-)
