    Long socks with no chaps

I've done this for the last 15 odd years. If im riding my own horses then i always make the effort to pop my long boots on so they become the normal to "feel" the horses through but if im hoping on and off clients horses between i just find it a lot more time effective to have the socks there...

    ALLERGIC REACTION

We're going through this with a youngster at work and its a nightmare. We're two years into this now - the horse only presents the reaction from late summer and through the winter months, come spring it magically disappeared. Initially the vet put the horse on a course of steroids and blamed it...

How much do you pay for feed & bedding?

Mine varies quite drastically, for the ISH (the minature doesnt use enough to worry about): Summer (out 7am in at 5pm) @£4 a bale works out about £10 a week 1 bale of megaspread (£10) and 2 pellets (£6 each) at the beginning of the month, i top up with 1 more bag of pellets mid month... so...

    Washing rugs

Found jet washing can be too harsh and cause more harm than good. We wait till a sunny day then lay them all out, use a soft brush and soapy water to scrub the mud off then hose clean and leave to dry, if they stink or the liners bad then we leave to soak in an old wheelbarrow full of soapy...

Should I rug the ponies? Opinions please!

Unless its ill, old, a wimp, needs a bit of help with weight or needs to be dry/clean to be worked its naked for us today. Felt sorry for them yesterday so went to catch them in early (stabled overnight)... apart from the odd one they all made it their personal mission to refuse to come to the...

    Letting your horse gallop

Yes - If the grounds good... and more importantly IF i know i can stop . Sad thing about the fens is the lack of a good long stretch without a ditch thrown in so you have to pick your moments and know the terrain. Saying that FDL is feeling awfully fresh at the moment so we'll stick to our...

    ID bridle photos?

Not the best photos sorry as i dont tend to take pictures unless its like a landmark for me. Here is her traditional hunter bridle with plaited brow band Here is a hunter bridle again but with a thinner flat noseband This is her dressage flash bridle which is the Rhinegold...

Do you have a horse that makes you smile?

Almost every day. FDL is such a character but her antics aren't always the most intentional, just this morning she was tied up outside the stable snoozing while i was messing about around the yard - she'd relaxed so much as she was going she head butted the wall, shot up and then looked around...

Do you trim a bridle path?

Nope i have never done any of mine, even the scruffy cob as i dont really see much point. I often cut it for clients though as requested when im clipping/tidying up and i have to admit despite being a very easy going person it is one thing that eats away at me on the inside if it hasnt been done...

    Anyone tow with a VAN?

You rarely even notice the trailer behind to be honest, im from the Fens though so cant really comment on what it would be like near long steep hills but we've never had any issues with what we have encountered on our travels. Very easy in comparison to some vehicles we've used. The total length...

    Anyone tow with a VAN?

I do regularly. We use the landrovers for local and use a ford transit that has been converted into a camper if going for long distance or staying overnight - tows beautifully when you get a hang of the length of the two combined. Have also used a van before to carry a carriage but that was a...

Relocating - where is the best place to look??

glad i could be of some help :) yes it is a completely different atmosphere. Everyone is so friendly and most pretty down to earth which makes my job as a freelance groom so much more enjoyable! Sounds ridiculous but we found zoopla the best place to search. All the equestrian based sites/estate...

Relocating - where is the best place to look??

I moved into the lincs/norfolk area a couple years ago now with a similar budget with the goal of keeping the horses at home. Didnt want anything fancy but minimum of 2 acres and 3 bed detached (own a biiiiig hunter so she needed to actually stretch her legs). While it is more than possible at...

What horse did you set out to buy and what did you end up with?

After finishing university and moving across the country for a fresh start I went out to buy a new competition horse. 15.2hh - 16hh, under 8 year old, Gelding, not the biggest budget so competing at low level dressage with the potential to work up towards being affiliated at the higher levels...
