I use a flexible filly for the older horses and even though they do eat out the sides a bit, it does seem to reduce their intake without making them too cross or hot.
The Shetland, however, is a different matter. Having worn his ultimate grazing muzzle for months over the spring with no issue...
Our Shetland did that, so we have the bucket inside a snug fitting tyre, and some large bricks in the bottom of the bucket to weight it down. Now he just fills it with hay instead 🙈
Mine is like that! Tried overnight turnout for a bit as a fellow livery wanted me to so they could be out together - he hated it. So it’s out in the day and in at night all year round, which has its advantages (good for the waistlines!) but I don’t get the quicker summer muck outs 😆 looking back...
We‘ve done this with ours too, he’s been super about it! Now doing a bit of long reining for exercise and to get him used to not always having a lead rein person.
Mine has had a mild case of it for years and touch wood we’ve managed it without issue. He wears a guardian mask in the field, which I have variously tried lining with cotton, fleece and some bossy bib fabric to try and prevent rubbing. I think it helps, but he still has his fetching “sunglasses...
I’ve recently put my older boy onto Fast Fibre, which genuinely does soak up the water in about a minute. I then mix in his happy hoof and he really enjoys it. He’s a good doer but needed a softer feed due to a tooth fracture for a bit and it suits him very well.
I’ve used speedibeet in the...
The other two are a 15hh older Connie, and a 15.3hh Connie x ID. Never had any trouble between the three of them, they get on like a house on fire. If there’s any shenanigans then the Shetland always starts it 😆 weight management has been trial and error but the Connie x ID had a terrible...
Ours is a standard Shetland, he joined us as a yearling from a herd in Dartmoor and has fitted right in with my two geldings - he is joyful, cheeky, knows when to play and when to stop etc, so I don’t think your plan is made at all! The only thing is he just does not care for electric fencing...
I think it varies between horse. My old boy needs regular cleaning due to melanomas in his sheath - I stay on top of that due to having battled fly strike previously. Vet’s advice was just warm water and cotton pads, which works well. My others only get done when there’s an aroma from the...
