Why do they massively over rug the racehorses? To stop coat growing back? Are you in Scotland (think so, so maybe it is colder and windy)?

Yes in Scotland. The human is a bit chily so they out another rug on. Honestly it drives me insane! Your never going to stop the coat growing unless you have day-glow bulbs in every stable turned on 20 hours a day every day all year round ? which btw Dan Skelton does so you will rarely see one of his horses clipped throughout the winter.

Interesting. Does Dan Skeleton leave them un rugged under the lights so skin absorbs light? Or is that not needed?

That would drive me nuts I hate over rugging I have Arab's and they are clipped but they are not generally cold horses, even clipped I can't imagine a horse needing all those rugs it must be so uncomfortable.
 
On another topic (apologies to those using these) I hate 0g turnouts, I think it makes them colder (their coats can’t fluff up). Mine stay naked until I can use about 100g. They are in 200g tonight as it’s meant to rain quite a bit but they’ll come off in the morning.

I agree - they are useless and they are never waterproof either.

I don't think the point of no fill turnouts is to keep the horse warm in colder temperatures though. I use mine a lot in late spring/ summer/ early autumn to keep my mare dry, as she gets rain scald if she's out in heavy rain. Plus she's an elderly Arab and doesn't like getting wet, and she also gets very cold if she gets wet through. But I don't want to make her too hot if the weather is fairly mild, so no fill turnouts are extremely useful. Essentially, she wears them in the sort of temperatures where you wouldn't rug if it wasn't raining. I'm not talking about warm/ hot days with thundery showers - then she goes naked. It's more when I know I need to keep her dry to stop her getting cold. I have a Welsh D too and a no fill turnout wouldn't be a lot of use for him unless I wanted to keep him clean, so maybe it depends what sort of horse you've got. But trust me, no fill turnouts are worth their weight in gold for horses like my old Arab!

Depends on the rug IME. Some no fill rugs are very thin and leak, others are definitely thicker and 100% waterproof with a double layer. My no fill Epic Big Horse zero fill rug is double lined and fully waterproof and definitely warms my horse!
 
I've got 2 weatherbeeta no fills (one with mesh sides) and a rhino that are totally waterproof. Perfect at the moment for my tb who does run quite hot but needs a little protection from the rain and wind. He was a perfect temperature yesterday. This is in Hertfordshire so not as cold as further north.

Also got used in the depths of winter for fat very fluffy retired tb who was a very hot horse but would get rain scald as his coat while really thick was really silky and just didn't repel water like a native coat.

Eta they were seriously expensive rugs or would have been if I hadn't bought in sales. I've sold about 4 useless cheap no fills.
 
My cob was in his PE high neck 1200D on Tuesday, dry as a bone & never leaks, my 2 Weatherbeeta top of the ranges don't leak either.
Took it off yesterday as dry & 16c, and left it off overnight but we did have a few showers, he couldn't care less. He has a shelter which he loves but often stands outside in the rain - I'm sure it reminds him of home (Ireland)
I always hear him saying in Father Ted's voice "sure it's just like home aaaaaah" (must have myself check for further signs of insanity)

I love my 0gs.

I have a good doer native so try to rug as minimally as possible - I aim for him naked all winter but with him clipped, ridden 5-6 days a week and myself working full time it's not always do-able in the real depths of winter. If I have a lesson, a clinic/event, a busy week at work and just need to minimise mud scraping time (or it's just continuously grotty weather) they keep the worst of the mud, rain and wind off him without making him 'toasty' so he still uses some calories to keep warm.

Mine haven't yet leaked but I didn't buy cheap 0g either.
 
I have my tb out in a 0g it’s awfully windy but not cold so he doesn’t need any weight the wind just takes all the heat off him cuz he doesn’t seem inclined to grow a winter coat!!

I'm really not trying to be offensive. In the UK in early autumn almost all unclipped horses and ponies have no need of rugs to keep them sufficiently warm. So on your second point, I would generally disagree that most people are good at this. They rug for reasons other than their horse's needs/welfare.

I'm not anti rugs per se. I use them every winter but generally wait until a horse is clipped or it is rather colder than it is currently for an unclipped horse. I also, for a horse in regular work, will use a light sheet on occasion at other times but I perfectly acknowledge that has nothing to do with them needing it, rather that it is for my convenience in keeping them clean and tidy. There is absolutely no way horses and ponies need the vast wardrobe many owners have for them!
 
I have a really old weatherbeeta 0g turnout I never wash or re proof it it has never leaked its great for chucking over a fly rug when it rains in summer as Arabi hates getting wet, it's also ideal like tonight his not got much coat so it goes over his fly rug and just gives him a bit of protection.
