2022 Grand National

Just read this in the stewards enquiry

Mr Sam Waley-Cohen, the rider of the winner, NOBLE YEATS (IRE), was suspended for 9 days and fined £400, for using his whip above the permitted level from after jumping the last fence and in the incorrect place on the run to the line.

Only racing stewards would suspend someone who has retired !

i enjoy racing but cant watch the GN live, the last time i watched it live was 1987 when dark ivy died, such a beautiful horse who won the best turned out prize and i had picked him as my runner, that really affected me and i can watch the replay when i know whats happened to the horses, but really pleased for sam, what a fairytale result..

No deaths would be best, but neither of these two were in the Grand National itself. One was injured earlier in the week and pts, the other had a suspected heart attack on the run in earlier this afternoon.

I'm not arguing with your view that you think the GN should be banned, but asking that you don't mistakenly use incorrect statements to back it up.

I hate when people use the ‘pushing those horses to heart attacks’ stance as a reason to be anti-racing.
Given the amount of horses lost in all sorts of competition at all levels to heart attacks, unfortunately all I can say is sometimes they just happen (Gemma T lost Arctic Soul today after an event due to what appears to be a heart attack, Hickstead, Wild Lone etc.), I even knew of a riding school that had a middle-aged, fit, healthy pony just drop in the field due to a heart attack on his day off.
You will see more horse deaths in racing as it’s better regulated in reporting horse deaths, and more races run than events, showjumping, dressage etc on the same competitive level. It’s also nearly impossible to get a complete list of horses who have died eventing etc. because those records aren’t kept the way they are with horse racing. Even horses who are fatally injured on the gallops or due to colic are meant to be recorded, which I don’t see across any other equestrian sports really. I am sure if they ran on the same level and frequency and with the same consistency as racing does we would see similar figures and as riders we can’t lie to ourselves and say that isn’t true either.

The other stupid thing about banning an amateur is that you are only banned on days when there are amateur rider races. They can still ride in normal races every day of the week, their ban is only in effect on a day when there is an amateur race under rules - flat or jumps ??

Yes that is hilarious! No wonder their are concerns about the industry

So that makes it okay then ?

Why do anti's feel the need to jump on every racing thread? I get that not everyone likes racing. Not everyone likes eating meat. Not everyone likes abortions etc but not everyone feels the need to jump down other peiples throats.

An ex-racehorse who made his career eventing had a heart attack today - Arctic Soul - are you going to blame that on his racing career over a decade ago?

It would be interesting to know if any of the anti racing people go hunting....or other horse sports? I just avoid reading threads that might 'wind me up' or upset me as i respect everyone has their own opinion .

Getting back to this thread any news how are Rachel or Discorama, i can't find anything.

Paul Nolan just updated to say sadly they have lost Discorama ?

Urgh as I suspected from the way he was moving in the replay, Paul Nolan has tweeted to say Discorama was pts

Still trying to find reliable news on Anibale Fly and Éclair Surf

Anibale Fly I don’t think was a concern, but haven’t seen anything.
The latest unconfirmed I have seen on Eclair Surf was that the horse was winded but okay, but nothing from Emma Lavelle yet.
Still nothing on Rachel Blackmore so hoping no news is good news.

With the greatest of respect guys, I made this thread for those who enjoy the GN. I realise it's controversial and certainly far from perfect, but I would respectfully ask, if you want to debate the GN please create your own thread for doing so, as that was not why I created this thread.

Ignoring the fact that it is pointless suspending someone who has retired, I'm not entirely surprised as I did think S W-C was using the whip an awful lot on the run in, especially compared to the jockey on the second placed horse (Mark Walsh?).

Was Eclair Surf the one who fell early on and seemed to stay down for a bit afterwards? You could see a horse lying down in the background as the horses raced away.

I saw an ad for the Ulster Region Summer Pony Tour (SJ) today, with an image of the head of the unhappiest looking pony you could possibly have picked to advertise it. I don't like seeing deaths in racing but I wish that other disciplines had anything like the level of welfare control that racing has.

i saw that too & thought the exact same! Dreadful photo and not exactly an ad for the league. They could have at least chosen one with their ears forward

I remember watching that race and watching Dark Ivy fall and when he rotated to his head up his neck was swaying I knew then he had broken his neck. I love greys and always want greys to win after my granda did.

Also dont support (for reasons which were proven to me today) but accidentally was in the pub when it came on so gave it a watch. must admit it was funny when it looked like one of the riderless ones was going to win ?

The National always feels quite special to me because my Nans house is just over the bridge after the Melling Road. I grew up regularly travelling through the middle of the course to get to my nans and we still own that house.

I find myself regularly conflicted about the National these days. I enjoy the buzz of it but I do hate seeing the fallers. Mind you, I was equally sad to hear of Arctic Souls passing and if timing had been different, he could have died out on the xc, it just so happens it occurred afterwards.

I think if racing were to be banned, the rest of equestrian sport would have to watch their back.

Indeed, a lot of the diagnostics and treatments available to the general horse population today would have been strictly reserved for racehorses 30-40 years ago.

Not to mention human diagnostics and treatments. My physio told me that a lot of the treatments he has used on humans were developed initially for use on racehorses.

Sadly Emma Lavelle has updated to say Eclair Surf suffered a traumatic head injury and lost his fight this morning.

I remember a post on here from years ago about a girl who’s horse suffered a head injury, that thread has always stuck with me. It was heartbreaking to read, especially as head injury in horses was never something I’d ever really thought about.
