Plans are a bit up in the air at the moment ?. The event is scheduled to take place from Wednesday 3rd May through to Sunday 7th May 2023. The coronation is on Sat 6th May.

It would be a nightmare to reschedule the event, but what an unfortunate clash of dates.

A message from Badminton Director Jane Tuckwell regarding Badminton 2023 and the Coronation.

"We are working on our planning to fit around the Coronation but until we know more of the details for this we are not able to confirm our arrangements for the weekend. As soon as our plans are in place, we will communicate same to all."

As Camilla is supposedly into horses, you'd think they would have thought it through, especially with their niece Zara likely to be riding. I know eventing is not the be all and end all but it's an unfortunate clash. I believe they changed the June date because it clashed with the Derby

I suppose they have so many connections to things and events (and just the sheer amount of events from all walks of life and different sports going on every weekend) there will always be something it clashes with.

In racing it now clashes with the 2000 Guinaes but what I suspect racing will do is move the meeting forward a day. So the 1000 Guinaes is on Thursday, 2000 on Friday rather than Fri/Sat. Or they may just run it all on one day on the Friday.

Thanks TP for posting on this.

I'm guessing that a big chunk of Badminton's revenue now comes from the pay per view subscriptions, so if millions are watching The Coronation, this will presumably affect Badminton TV's revenue.

It's also an interesting conundrum about those who subscribed last year for an annual Badminton TV pass (me included) - if Badminton '23 is moved back a week (to the Bank Holiday weekend), will that mean we effectively get two events for the price of one, or is there a clause in the small print to cover that eventuality?

That all aside, I was really looking forward to another trip to Badminton next year, but instead we'll be heading into London very early on the Saturday to hopefully get a spot on the route to watch the Procession. ?

We'd be delighted though if Badminton was moved to the right or left by a week - or even split so that perhaps the dressage was Thurs and Fri, the XC on the Sun and SJ on Mon ?

I wonder how many people would actually swerve attending or viewing Badminton XC day in order to watch the coronation?

Not many of us on here, methinks.

I was glued to the telly (when not on colic watch) on the royal funeral day, but I'm not at all fussed about missing live coverage of the coronation.

More than you think I’d imagine purely from a moment of history point of view.

This is an interesting idea, and surely the simplest work around in terms of knock-on impacts to other events? Not unprecedented to have a rest day either, it's happened due to weather etc at Championships before now.
But I wonder how much infrastructure/suppliers would be affected - things like the camera crews. There will be a huge call to the capital on a lot of kit and personnel, and if some of it is the same that would be at Badminton, it will cause all kinds of headaches.

I reckon they will push Badminton back one day. I am sure they have showjumped on a Monday before when the bank holiday fell right.

Dressage Fri/Saturday then XC Sunday and SJ Monday.

Wouldn't be too disruptive, the only thing is whether things like portaloos, barriers, and infrastructure stuff are a problem if there is a clash.

Camera equipment will be the other consideration. There will be only so much to go around for the whole country and the nature of the two events mean there will be a lot of similar equipment like long distance lenses, temporary platforms etc needed (more so than a football /rugby match where the infrastructure is already built into the environment).

It was always going to clash with something, although given the connections, it seems one of the daftest events to clash with!

Yeah that was all the kind of infrastructure stuff I was thinking of.

Yes I’d definitely drop Badminton and go to London to see a piece of history happen. We’d have gone there for the queen’s funeral but my dad was on end of life care.

TBH I came away from Badminton with a bitter taste in my mouth last year. We’ve been going for years and years, but I’m getting where I’ve had enough and feel ripped off nowadays. Plus money is tighter.

I think it will be more about when causes the least disruption for policing it, more than anything else. Obviously Badminton doesn't require much in the way of a police force so it doesn't surprise me they have chosen this event to clash with.

The sensible thing would be to carry on and have it on a screen and pause the XC for an hour or so.

The coronation is only an hour so make sure Zara's times fit, put up a couple of screens to show the ceremony & let people make up their own minds.

Plus the journey to and from Buck House, various other bits and pieces. An hour is an understatement.
