Wondering whether I'll be fussed about watching the coronation on the screens on the Sat or not. I'll be walking the course and watching a bit of dressage on the Fri with OH, but he would rather have all his fingernails pulled out than return on the Sat to watch yet more dressage plus the coronation 🤣.

So he'll go off an do his own thing for the day on Sat while I return to Badminton to do the shops and spectate at whatever.
A day of shopping by yourself sounds heavenly to me!! 🤣

Last year a couple of posters gave details of directions into Badminton which missed most of the traffic on xc day. I followed them and they were brilliant and we missed the worst of the horrendous traffic - but I didn't keep them and I can't remember them..! Would someone mind reposting them or posting a link to the original post please?

We’re making a full weekend of it! Heading over Wed eve to watch the grassroots on Thursday and Friday. Think we have the Sat free as it’s the coronation so we’ll do some stuff around the hotel and local area. And back in again for xc Sunday and sj Monday. Bliss! Have a friend from a few yards back who’s in the GR so I am hoping to see her go round.

We went in the main car park on xc day last year, was absolutely fine but we got there by 8.30am! Left at about 4pm so missed most of the traffic, think we timed it right! It was so much better last year because no tickets sold on the gate, made a huge difference to the years before x

Theyre finally doing the drawings if anyone is going to watch!
I arranged my work day around being able to watch at 2pm whilst doing something innocuous which didn't need much concentration. Gave up at 3.15pm. What was their excuse for the delay?

Just watching it now on their FB page. At least Oli isn't first to go!

Nothing! They didn't even apologise when they came on air....was a bit of a shambles to be honest!

I do love the Badminton draw. Largely, as I never get the opportunity anywhere else to see so many people make pulling names out of a bowl look quite so complicated.

I hope LC got paid well 🤣

Just read through the start list, I have questions… 1. Where is Jonelle? Can’t find any info as to why she’s missing Badders this year - no horse at that level? Surely her husband could lend her a ride 😅

And 2. How the heck does Oli Townend manage to have 5 (FIVE!) 5*-ready horses?! Truly outstanding.

No idea, there isn't anything on their website to suggest why she's not riding either.
I know he's quite something isn't he?! 😂

Is there the sound of mini Price feet #2 on the horizon... although Jonelle has 5 entered for Kelsill this weekend so assume not as she also rode 3* and 4* classes end of March. OT is a phenomenon.

The Prices are well known for saying they need to be specifically Badminton/Burghley horses so maybe nothing is ready? Interestingly nothing entered for Kentucky either.

She did! He was hysterical. “Ooh another first timer!” as he pulled Gemma Stevens out of the bowl!

There seems to be a very small field of entries this year, and, indeed, lots of first timers (or am I as unobservant as the draw man??). It actually makes me feel better that I’m not going this year for the first time in years!

I think they have changed the rules on qualifying this year so no reserve list...

He also had issues with entries nationalities...!! The lady calling out numbers had much more of a clue about what was going on!

I did think about pregnancy, but at 43 that seems unlikely, and she completed a 4*S two weeks ago.

She does seem to have the horse power as well - She won Pau with Grappa Nera only a few months ago (but has only ran her in an OI since, was end of March so might have had a break?), and McClaren is “only”16…

On OT - he is evidently incredible at producing horses, but so are a select number of others. I suspect what sets him apart is his ability to find and retain owners willing to fill his stables with quality horses AND resist the temptation to sell. Well done to him in any case!

I think you've hit the nail on the head there with OT, he freely admits that he's not much of a team player and is very focused on his own success which is why he has been overlooked at times for teams...but he said recently he's trying to rectify that. He's clearly charming the owners!!

I admit that after the carry on a few years ago with his whip use he’s since managed to grow on me.

I wouldn’t ever send a horse to him, but I admire his drive and his talent. Especially in dressage, because he’s not got, erm, natural elegance yet he is always right up there. And I watched him do a clinic once, and he totally charmed the audience too.

I am not a huge fan of his riding style, and neither would I chose him to ride one of mine (bit too ”old school” for me, if you catch my drift), so to refine my earlier point somewhat, I don’t doubt he is a talented rider, but his marketing skills are clearly the difference. There are so many more modern and talented riders, and yet they find themselves stuck back down the levels when they have to retire their one top horse… Astier Nicolas comes to mind, not quite in the doldrums, but he’s only ever had one 5*-ready horse at a time, if that, and despite being pretty liked by the media/corporate sponsors, cannot seem to build the same kind of stable as Oli has. There are countless other examples, including King Michi himself, can’t really recall him having two 5* horses at the same time, let alone 5…

Oh, s0d it, I've just bought a ticket for a reserved covered grandstand seat for the dressage on the Saturday. I've never bothered doing this before, we've always relied on unreserved seats.

OH will be be off site doing his own thing. We'll have already walked the XC the day before. I'll be seeing how the day pans out re early/late dressage starts and everything stopping for 2 hours for the coronation as to just what I do when.

I did manage to get a solitary end of row seat next to the aisle so I can stretch my legs out sideways, those seats feel pretty cramped after a while - I'm fairly tall but not that tall.

I know what you mean! We are there Saturday too, I've got members tickets this time so plan on flitting between there and the unreserved seats 😂 I assume there will be big screens for the coronation!
We are back on Sunday for the XC too, Saturday will be our shopping day, I'm not attempting it on Sunday it was chaos last year!

So this is how Badminton is squeezing the coronation in on the Saturday. I'm relieved to hear that it's only the dressage that will be paused, everything else inc shops and food outlets will remain open.

👑👑👑 Coronation Day 👑👑👑

On Saturday 6th May the first section of dressage will start at 8am, ending at 10.15am to break for the Coronation of King Charles lll and The Queen Consort.

The Coronation will be shown on all the big screens, the shopping village will remain open and all food and drink concessions will continue to serve.

Dressage will resume at 12.45pm but for those wishing to continue watching the Coronation this will remain to be shown on the big screens located around the event with the dressage being shown on the big screen by the Pig & Whistle.
