I've finally stopped sobbing enough to write this. Yesterday my lovely, funny friend was set free. He went surrounded by people who loved him, after a morning spent eating his favourite treats. After a week of terrible weather, the sun was shining and he grazed under a beautiful apple tree surrounded by autumn leaves.

Making this decision was the worst thing in the world, but after a year and a half of trying to get him right, I knew in my heart it was time. For both of us. It's possible he had other things going on, but at 6 years old and with buggered hocks, I decided he deserved more than a lifetime of treatments (which he feared more than anything) and pain. Speaking to the vet reassured me of my decision.

We had two years together. We had amazing rides and we had rides where I was genuinely glad to have made it home alive... He was a special pony. He was endless laughter, mischief, and kindness. He was an amazing talent, and I'm so sad he was dealt a cruel hand.

I wish things could have been different - I wish I could have retired him in the knowledge he would be pain free and keep himself happy and safe, but I knew that would never be the reality.

Go and make trouble up there my lovely boy.

I'm so very sorry to hear this. It's terrible enough to lose an animal when they're old, but you feel cruelly robbed of years you thought you had together when they're so young. You did absolutely the right thing for Milo, he was lucky to have had an owner who was brave, unselfish and caring enough to make the hardest decision. My heart aches for you. Sending hugs. x
