Your barn is amazing! Do you keep in touch with the competition barn that you were at to start with - is that the barn where Beau is still at livery? Both seem great yards, but obviously only the current one has a resident (rug eating) pig!!

Bog looks lovely and sleek and shiny since his clip, so all being well that will let his neck settle down if he's not over-stretching to itch.

Have a great time with your Mum visiting, it must be hard when you're on tenterhooks with Bog, but hopefully your mind has been put at rest a bit now. 🤞

No- Beau is kept at home- the house I’m currently living in :). Except he’s not here he’s sunning himself at their Arizona home!! I have friends still at the other barn, much as I loved if I’m not sure I’d go back with any horse, it’s now nearing 2k a month including the required number of lessons (6).

Thank you, I feel a little better/calmer that he wasn’t displaying any of those signs when he reached around to show me where to clip NOW 🤣

It’s strange, clipping him was kinda upsetting, seeing him looking like a horse ready to have a season of eventing ahead. It’s easier for him to look like a feral fuzzy retired horse.

It is what it is and I’ll just take every day as it comes, I wish I had the funds to have a second horse but Boggle is just so expensive and I really don’t want to be so stretched financially, at least not at the moment. In 30 days or so I’ll finally be debt free from everything that happened, I’m looking forward to seeing my credit rating recover 🤣

I think the reason I wish I could have a second horse is because the thought of losing the routine of going to the barn etc is so hard. I got Boggle very quickly after losing Basil, it’s that need for routine. However, a second horse that’s a pain in the arse can make things far harder, as Boggle also proved at the time 😀

Wow Michen, you've done amazingly, and have clearly been working really hard to get back into the black again so quickly after having all that expense.

I really hope you get a nice stress-free and uneventful period, so that you can catch your breath a bit from the ordeal that's been the last twelve months - so fingers and toes firmly crossed for you and Bog! 😊

Thank you!! Here’s hoping for a summer of Bog waving his leg around at me and continuing to rule this world of his that I live in 🤣

He's got a pretty face, I'll give you that. But he's being stood up to photograph with a stallion chain through his mouth, he's over at the knee on both fronts, one worse than the other, the hind legs are too straight for my liking and he has a suspicious bump of muscle directly over the tuber sacrale at the top of the bum which can be an indicator of chronic SI strain. I hope he ends up in a nice place. I'll shut up now 🤣

ETA he's also got a resident ghost 👻 in his right hock 😲
.

I will say that nearly all racehorses in the US are handled day to day with a stallion chain, like they use a chifney in UK racing yards / racecourses. So I wouldn’t read into that too much to be honest.

Michen if you did decide to get an OTTB in the future, you can look up the vets list in the states they ran (I can help find them if needed as they aren’t always the easiest to locate depending on the state commission!) to see whether they have been flagged for unsoundness, bleeding, shockwave etc if you wanted to.

Thank you maddiemo that’s great advice if the time ever comes.

I’ve been chewing on this all day and have my vet booked in to come back Friday to put something alternative in his neck. Most likely PRP. I’ve read a few things on some of the USA forums about horses responding well to it in their neck. My reasoning being that it then leaves us somewhere to go, with the steroids later, if we need to in order to keep him comfortable for as long as possible.

I feel like I need to utilize whatever modern medicine has to offer, and the options are there. I don’t feel good about going to steroids again so soon.

Had to stop the nerve pain relief, was making him a bit slow/slightly wobbly. Not ok when there’s ice and snow around he needs to be as sharp on his feet as poss. Vets did warn me that could happen, typical that it did!

Perfectly happy to put his hoof through the bars because I’m late with his carrots though!

Much less itchy with his clip :) and here is Dusty helping herself to his stable!

I love his little face. And the pig!

A human friend was on gabapentin and found it made her a bit slow and tired, plus she couldn't drink alcohol on it, though I doubt that last side-effect is one of Boggle's main concerns.

Don't be fooled by that sweet little face, he escaped from his stable 3 times today to take a wonder around the barn. He's becoming more feral by the day!!

Yeah he seemed fine yesterday but I could see it today as could barn owner. I just don't feel like it's sensible to not have him 100% when he's got to negotiate tricky ground etc.

Dusty is a scream! She has high class taste in stables and rugs. Bog looks really shiny and silky with his clip. It was a good idea to relive him from his hair, much more comfy now.

I mean I really hated her for a while, because my god she caused so much stress for Bog. And she trashed my rug. And she started nesting in Bog's stable, but luckily she's stopped that now because Boggle has evicted her too many times. She rolls on her back for you to scratch her belly, FFS.

But yeh, I'm kinda fond of her. Being at the barn is just always a joy, there's a million dogs, kittens, cats, a pig, loose horses everywhere, alcohol everywhere.. it's a great place to be! :D

It looks like barn heaven to me :). I like how they keep the breezeway clear too.

You have a lot of energy with your work, horse, travel, dog, you really burn the candle at both ends. My daughter is the same. When I tell her to have a rest, she says she'll rest when she's dead! More power to you and more power to Bog's uneventful retirement. I have an old retired horse and he is so important to me too, so I get you doing all of this to save Bog xxx

So I had the choice between steroid and HA, just HA, a cheaper PRP or a more expensive PRP with more platelets. The more expensive being $1700 instead of $800. Expensive PRP it is. Then I think we can follow it up with some more steroids in a couple of months and it gives us somewhere to go rather than doing just steroids. @nutjob I will report back on friday once I understand how PRP can work in a joint a little more, but when I google quite a few studies come up. The expensive stuff we are using is a combination of PRP and IRAP, apparently.

Most expensive oversized pet ever.

I'm looking at his massage pad thinking I should really send it back but I think he will really like it and it IS his birthday soon (okay, April).

I wonder whether I should fully clip him. It’ll be a pain with rugging but I’m thinking about how this could go with his itchiness and shedding. Urgh.
Maybe just do a half clip I do similar with Arabi as he gets itchy and too hot even though his not ridden much, I just leave his back end on and the top of his back like a high trace.

Too late, it's all gone! It was the further back bits that were annoying him so I just took it all off, he seems much happier and less frantic about itching/rolling/etc

They tried my mum on Gabapentin - she came off it almost immediatley as it just spaced her out yet zero impact on the actual problem!

Oh that pig! 😂😂

Interesting, I realised how doped he was because he was doing that kind of "sedated" snort, where they snort at things they usually wouldn't but it's the sort of slow low one, which is not Boggle's usually! Then I noticed he seemed just kind of... slow in his movement.

He seemed perfectly happy but I didn't see some sort of miraculous change in him, that was worth him being on those drugs. And tbh, if he needs something like that which half sedates him to exist, it's time to say gooodbye.

It was worth a shot just in case!

I normally end up taking the whole lot off in March anyway because of the moulting and him being itchy so don't blame you.

As long as you have the rugs why not.

Thanks, that's great info - it does look very interesting and it's from your horses own blood so less side effects than some of the powerful drugs. After my PRP injections I was worse initially and it took weeks rather than days to see an improvement, but in the end it did help a lot, I had 2 rounds. I see you can get it over here so its an option. I need to talk to my vet about why she doesn't want to inject the neck. Whether it's just steriods she doesn't want to put in or it's because the joint is unstable in his case and there's a risk of damage from the needle.

There's a specialist center here for wobblers (Rainbow Equine) so I'm thinking of getting another opinion on mine even if its just review of his notes and xrays.

Thanks for posting so much info, it's given me a lot more to think about. I hope for both of us the PRP / IRAP has some benefit.

Interesting about the blood!

Totally different scenario but they have taken some of Pesto’s blood and separated it and are putting drops of the plasma in his eye as apparently it’s fantastic for healing and as his own body made it, it’s literally made for him.

Bets on whose horse costs more this week?

That is what PRP is, had the same with an eye injury to one of mine, years ago

Bog was great today! Really sharp and good on his feet and in front. Just played with a few poles and some backing up. No sign of a thing. He seemed to like his massage pad for a bit then got bored and the leg waving started 🤣

Pepper thinks this is the best game EVER. Bog does not agree!
