Guess I drifted off to sleep for 4 hours!

Thank you for the banamine explanations that’s really helpful. There’s so many things you forget to ask or question in the moment. I know they are doing everything they can. Hopefully my vet will speak with them this morning.

3-4 hours to wait for the next update, I guess.

We tried to treat her on property for four days but she ended up spending a week a week in horspital on supportive care but has made a full recovery and is back out eventing with no long lasting effects. Can I just gently mention, as I work in the equine vet industry, that the vets will know what they are doing. Long term (more than a few days) banamine use can cause other problems such as GI issues/ulcers (which you don't want!). It is completely reasonable for them to take him off it to to observe how his body responds. Remember they always have it in the back pocket to give if the fever becomes high again. Toxic laminitis is a real risk with continual fevers and septicity, which is why they are icing his feet. Said mare above had her legs in ice boots and ice buckets as often as we could practically manage it. Early preventative measures really do make a huge difference down the road, so it's super they are so aware of that risk. I know it isn't a huge comfort right now, but he will probably start turning the corner in the next few days and rapidly improve. Most, if not all, of our client horses who have been this sick have never had a recurrence, sometimes it's just a spontaneous attack of something on the immune system which never happens again!

Keeping everything crossed that Boggle turns the corner and is feeling better soon. Hopefully an update from your UK vet will give you some reassurance and you can get some food and some rest.

Glad you managed to get some kip. I’m so sorry that you and Boggle are going through this, please know you have stacks of people rooting for you - I know it’s not practical help but hopefully it is of some comfort to know your virtual horsy tribe are here, on call to support you, 24/7. X

Just caught up on this post. Vibes from me too.

Another experience here - a horse I owned in Spain spent time in hospital with a virus and ended up with laminitis. He made a full recovery very quickly.

All fingers and toes crossed for you and Bog 🤞

Just spoke with the vet. They are disappointed that his fever hasn't improved overnight, so they are nebulizing now to get more aggressive with the antibiotics directly into the lungs. Then they will re scan today too. She mentioned that he could have aspirated on the tubing, which (again, I know this happens, I'm not trying to shift blame) there was a young new vet trying and struggling to tube him on admission. I was very close to asking them to stop and have a senior vet do it, but I appreciate vets have to learn. Anyway there's no point tearing my hair out over that or trying to understand why because it's done now.

His feet are still cool and no signs of lami so far.

They are slightly confused and surprised as to why he's so bright and eating (and wanting more) as they would expect him to be behaving more sick given the fever, like he was to begin with... so I feel like there's a strong fighting Bog in there.

Both vets (they have an internal medicine specialist on his case) are going to call me later when they should have another scan result plus the results of the viral panel (finally).

Yeah, I guess so. They rang me early today and my stomach dropped because I thought that meant it would be bad news.

When Basil died, the vets said they would ring me when he was on his feet and recovered fully from the GA, that it would be a couple of hours. The phone rang after 20 minutes so I knew before I even answered it that it was bad.

Jeez, this is bring up all sorts of clearly not too very buried trauma.

I should think so, they’ve run any and every test they can and multiple sets of bloods. I can’t fault them for how thorough they are and I’ve told them to spare no expense in any diagnostics/treatment or whatever he needs.

I do and wouldn't need to be alone for a second if I didn't want to but... I also find it much easier to update/put things on here somehow. I dunno, I think I prefer being alone with this, physically that is.

Ouch for the bill. I had a friend whose horse went to hospital for something minor and ended up with salmonella and I remember her saying the costs were eye watering.

I hope you get those results back with "something" for the vets to work with. Unknown viruses being a challenge. So they think the pneumonia was due to the junior vet not being able to tube him?

No they didn’t say that, we were just talking about the possible causes and aspiration was one so it got me thinking. But it’s not unusual or odd I guess for him to have developed this as a complication to the fever (I don’t think).

I’ll tie myself in knots thinking about it if I feel it was avoidable so I’m trying not to. 🤢

Ps and yes everything here is way more expensive. I’d say each vet bill I’ve had is at least double what I’d expect it to be in the UK.

Same with feed, everything.

I wish I could get a refund on the extremely expensive trip I’m meant to be on next week, but sadly not. Obviously I’d never in a million years have booked it if I’d known this was on the horizon!

But you can’t take it with you and I just need my little Bogalog to be well, if only money truly could buy a good outcome but we all know it doesn’t work like that.

Horrible for you but it sounds like Bog is putting up a good fight and is having the best help and support so hang on in there!! Gruelling I know; both physically and emotionally but hopefully there will be better news soon. I have been thinking of you both and sending the best possible vibes from here. x
