Burghley thread

Kudos to Piggy for getting such a lovely test out of a Mill Law! 😂

I evented one for a lot of years, and he was a great horse, but definitely not easy!!
I feel like piggy is one of those magic people that just gets the best out of horses through feel and nothing fancier than that - like she rides everything in a single jointed egg butt snaffle but they do really like to work for her - I mean Vanir Kamira was only a very average mover but Piggy got a beautiful test out of her

Also to add to this - if anyone hasn't listened to the evening podcast burghley episode with her and Tim Price it's very very funny - and on her first Burghley she was last after the dressage, so things have changed a bit!

Alexander Bragg's test was also lovely - particularly the canter work. And I do enjoy the fact his horse is chill enough he can egg the crowd on to applause more

I was wondering if I could start a thread thanking/praising Burghley TV and every one concerned, from the runners, the camera men/ladies, the sound people, the editors, the presenters, the record engineers, the producers, directors and whoever decided, “we can do this” for once again giving us probably the best coverage we have ever had…and all for the price of a reasonable lunch….
Because without them we, those of us not lucky enough to be there wouldn’t be able to post comments on here…

I can’t think when I last paid £25 for a lunch either 😁, but Burghley tv is indeed top notch and is incredible value for money - the quality has been much praised on the forum before.

Slight worry with the sound gremlins at the first horse inspection, but today has been faultless with superb coverage and top commentators.

If I could take the time to watch it all I would have it, its actually the first year since moving I'm not going at all.

The perfect year(s) was go, spend the evening at home catching up on the stuff you missed on free burghleytv, go again the next day ;)

Just think when you have finished moving, when everything is in the “right” place, winter has arrived, the fire is lit, you have a lovely eat on lap meal and the beverage of choice….you can relax and watch…….

Interesting comments, thank you everyone.

I'm going on Saturday, which is the first time since before the M42 was built, so that dates me. I can't really remember much about the day, but I do remember driving back through Coventry in the dark.

So I'm looking forward to it, rather disappointed that there are only 50 horses, so we will have to be out on the cross country course from the start.

I'm just wondering what time I will have to get up on Saturday morning.

I finished moving 9 years ago 🤣, with the help of some hhoers one of whom I met for the first time when she turned up with a drill to help build a wardrobe. I don't know, your fancy lunches and fires 🤣. It's an interesting one as I kind of find if I'm not going to them I just don't end up that interested in competitions, whereas if there I get really into it and quite invested.

OH I'd want to be there by 8am if at all possible for traffic purposes sorry!

Was there as my shopping day today - the downpours were frequent and serious but bright sunshine in between and all holding up well. Attending most of the weekend but not Saturday for the rest time I can ever remember - looking forward to watching it all live at home though!

I have to say there has been a large drop in the number of trade stands since COVID and only a handful of new faces this year. I wonder if some have been priced out or online trade is more profitable? They already dropped a marque last year and some strategic, but not unnoticed, placement this year to hide how many others have gone. Online shopping does have its perks but it has killed off the Sunday afternoon sales at these events!

According to a friend with a trade stand, Burghley has always been incredibly expensive. I think all events are finding the same numbers wise. Its a bit of a viscous circle, less entries, less spectators so less money spent on trade stands, less keen to come next year!

I will be leaving for the third day shortly (if you count the trot-up), so this is a quick response.

1) I have been going since 1991 and while i still enjoy it, there are definitely some differences, especially over the past few years, which seem not all to the good. I know they have to make money to keep it all going in the first place; I get that, but as someone else said, it can be a bit of a vicious circle-higher prices, fewer stands etc....hmm, shall I go this year? I really don't want to see it lost.

2) The Muzak in the dressage is dreadful and really distracting. You can't concentrate on the test, because you are thinking, oh that movement doesn't really go with that music...oh, it's not actually dressage to music, is it? I have no idea why they think it is is in any way necessary, but it's been turning up for several years now and I know there have been complaints about it, but it carries on.

3) Has anyone else noticed that tickets now appear to be being sold on what seems a daily basis in North Stand blocks C and E which are usually reserved for people who have paid for membership tickets to watch the dressage? There are "Reserved" stickers on loads of seats. I don't know the ins and outs, but it seems as if Burghley are "selling" the same seats twice. A similar thing happened some years back and there were so many complaints from members who couldn't get in to the dressage it did stop. I don't know why it's back, if it is; but it's not a good look. It's probably the main reason we pay for member's tickets; to have "free" access to the dressage throughout the day. But I could be wrong about the arrangements.

Well, I'm off-hope the weather holds!

This totally, I remember her earlier days at great Witchingham no one else could get a tune out of Dusty in fact she often had to help catch her in the field, the horse was just so sensitive, but Piggy could read her

Anyone watching the 5yo young event , how has piggy gone into the lead when she has a show jump down . There have been some lovely faultless combinations before her.
Loved push on Cooley but he’s lying 7th out of 12 gone , shows you what do I know 🤣

I was there today and had a quick mooch around trade stands... I was more there for the horsey stuff, which is sadly mainly various bits of lemieux stuff from every place - not much variety at all! The lifestyle shops ''country lifestyle " and infinite variations of a boring blue schoffel gilet aren't for me 😂
My 2 girls are obsessed with LeMieux...It really does my head in!😂
