Burghley thread

Does anyone have the link to the XC start times? I've looked on the website but can only find the results following the dressage or a list of entries complete with flags which is a bit much to print off!

It was quite a lengthy hold pre test and they did seem to check the horse very thoroughly. It appears to have been a superficial wound not near the bit and once the blood was wiped off it did not continue to bleed.

Was transfixed by the large blood red cloth that one of the officials was holding as they continued to check the mouth 😳, a white cloth might have been more appropriate.

The horse was quite unsettled in the contact during the test and there was tail swishing. But evidently no more blood.

First horse off 11.30am.

Burghley tv coverage starts 11.00am.

ETA seen some comments that people who have paid for Burghley tv via various third party apps inc Apple have been paying more than £25 for a year’s subscription , someone paid double that.

No probs for people who pay directly via the Burghley tv website, it’s £25.

Burghley only took my £25 today. Pn rolling subscription. Such great value!
I'm an Oli fan but know he is very marmite. Delighted for Austin and Salty but also Tom Crisp who works so hard and is very local to me.
Interesting to hear Oli's view in conference that Derek DiG likes to get rid of those who wont make the distance in the first 3rd of the course. If they make it up winners avenue and over the jump at the top they've got a good chance of making it around apparently. I think the whole thing looks utterly terrifying!

Where did you hear that Nicnac? It makes sense. If they’re not going to get round it’s probably better that they hit problems before they get tired.
I just can’t see how they get past fence 7 full stop!
It was in the post dressage leaders conference.just seen a clip of Alec Lahore (sp) saying expecting around half the field to make it to the end 😳
Makes sense if problem early on can reroute to Boekelo or Pau. Apparently if retire under 7 minutes.

Sorry but a 50% completion rate is just nuts. Let's hope it jumps much better than expected. Safe travels to all!

A query… I’m quite tempted by signing up to Burghley tv but I have no desire or time to watch the dressage or most of the showjumping.
I would like to watch all the cross country.
But we have rubbish broadband. Is it even worth the effort?

Do you have problems getting onto all streaming services ie YouTube ……if you can get onto that, you should be able to get Burghley TV….
It’s worth the money and if it works for you, you can watch cross country from many previous years….

It would be a poor completion rate. Especially with such a low number of starters.

Xc completion rate last year was 65%; 63% in 2023, so 50% would be on the low side.

We can, but with buffering.

ETA2 and that ruddy Muzak is back with worbling chorals 😡

Just a quick point about the annoying background muzak, I understand it can be annoying to spectators, but as a rider I love a bit of background noise as it hides any noises I might make to the horse... I bet the riders are pleased to have it. It also masks any sudden noises from the stands, so its handy all round for the riders.

Wasn't impressed with Ollie winding up the crowd as Emily King was coming in for her test, was it deliberate or just thoughtless?
I’m with you on this. Was it gamesmanship as he asked us to be quiet when he finished and then whipped us up when he’d come out the arena and she was going around the outside. Would love to hear her view on it

She gave her view she said valmy was far too experienced to be affected and if anything it gave him a lift

I am no Oli fan and I was horrified by his hands today, so hard on the horse the whole time, just awful. I was there today, Emily was in the arena and trotting past us in the North Stand before he had left the ring. So she was risking a lot of noise disturbing her horse, but he seemed fine about it and did a lovely test.

Which marquee had gone last year? The one by Discovery Valley? I can’t think.

Can anyone there tell me whether there is a garden furniture stand next to the food area by Discovery Valley (was next to the marquee last year). If so could you get me their name/number. I bought a set from them last year and it was fantastic. I had intended to buy another set this year if we’d gone. And I can only find the website, which is much more expensive.

If you mean the teak furniture one I haven’t seen it I am afraid but I may of missed it. The marquee that was lost is the one previously down by Discovery/Defender valley on the parking side.

We had a lovely day today. I will move on from shopping but one final point - most food outside of the food walk is owned by one big company - please support the smaller businesses and get lunch from a stall if possible. The number of food stalls in the food walk has also shrunk a lot this year and it would be a real loss for the only food options in the future to be the generic vans also serving you at every other festival, sports event, concert…

That was gamesmanship back from Emily - eff you Oli your tactics to put my horse off didn't work. Good on her.

Oli has done it before, he knows just what he’s doing, and how inappropriate it is to whip the crowd up to wild applause while the next horse is approaching the arena.

I am not an out and out Oli basher, I react to whichever version of Oli is in front of us, and I try to like him. I normally enjoy his dressage tests, but he kept a vice like hold on Cooley Rosalent’s front end throughout yesterday which was most unedifying. According to Oli, he dared to put his hands down and forward after the first spook - so this was his version of riding with his hands down and forward 🙄.

We could have probably had her a little bit quieter, perhaps a bit more work, but once we're up and in the more open work, I thought that's where she started to breathe, and I think she progressed as the test went on. I felt like she let me in a lot more as we got further on through the test. You can only ride what you have underneath you. I felt like I was brave enough that once she'd had her first spook, I sort of put my hands down and forward and said, go, and she responded very well."

I agree with you re the gamesmanship as did Emily who politely said he is very competitive.
However his test was lovely very free flowing easy , accurate and expressive and as a result suitably marked .
Rosie did come in lit up and as a result it takes a brave person to do the correct thing and let go by putting your hands down and forward on what feels an unexploded time bomb.
