CDJ withdrawn from paris

Currently, supporting horse sport means supporting, for example, Daniel Coyle riding a horse called Incredible in a way that does indeed beggar belief.

That's a broad brush. One can support good horse/rider combinations and enjoy seeing proper dressage, such as the Spanish Riding School, without supporting animal abuse.

The FEI has at least made spurs optional for all levels. That’s a big start. But agree with you that maybe we need to look at complete bans on them for the lower levels. At least with the top riders, their leg is either consciously on or off and they’re using the spurs on purpose. Whereas so many amateur riders, especially when they’re starting to do tests all in sitting trot, are unconsciously gripping with their lower leg the whole time and digging the spur into the horse with every stride.

Is there no rule about not using spurs with rowels, or something along those lines?

I'd say the SRS itself is compromised, depends what we define as abuse I guess but no I'd not say it's abuse. There are much better examples to follow these days though, correct training rooted in correct biomechanics/tensegrity, an understanding of physical forces, and ethics right at the centre.

Rowels can be seen to be kinder by some (no idea if there's research into it) as the spur does roll over the skin rather than catching and pulling on it.

Very glad to be allowed back on the thread after being banned about 9 months ago! Thanks TFC.

Banned?

The only thing I've found thus far is the financial problems. Can someone point me in the direction of the riding/training issues?

There has long been criticism of the work shown, that warmups show LDR, that the work in performances isn't what it was, and then in recent years it's been turbo boosted by new management who are very commercial and not rooted in the SRS, as was historically always the case. I was supposed to see them about 20 years ago but we got a puncture on the way and I was in two minds as to whether to go see them even then.

As for why I was pulled from the post, I made a comment based on hearsay about the rider(s) we were discussing. With my job my hearsay can often come from very connected places, but it was still hearsay.

Horse and Hound is a relatively small business and I expect they are terrified of being sued.

On the larger issue of violence against horses:

Envigo, mentioned in the introduction, tried to headhunt me. I'm sure they expected me to do magic. I had met too many people who had worked their butts off trying to fix years worth of issues and violations of the Animal Welfare Act. I'm so glad that I didn't even talk to the people. When the story broke and the horrible conditions there I was upset and angry.

And, now that I've taken this way off thread, back to our regular programming

Not sure if a 'what's up with dressage generally' thread is needed at this point but this popped up on my fb today. I've been wondering about modern passages for ages and this is a good analysis. Have people stopped training it from trot in the absence of genuine collection? Are they training piaffe from halt/walk by whacking legs a la Morten Thomsen and then allowing the piaffe to creep?

I saw this yesterday and found it very interesting

It came up on my FB this morning too - really interesting and shows how far removed the more modern spider legs style is.
