Ah, I really feel for you OP, and to me it sounds like he could be in a lot of pain with his feet which could be making him upset about everything and very difficult to handle, and also with the sweet itch, probably why he doesn’t like stuff doing with his skin, like washing and clipping. This isn’t bolshy this is a blind panic where he is a danger to anyone around him. I have had professional help with no improvement. Lack of education or not I am at the end of my tether with a horse that is dangerous and can’t be sold on and today has just topped it all off.
I’m sorry I’m not up to your standards but I can’t afford to be badly hurt as I’d like to keep my job and have bills to pay including those for keeping him.
I have had experience of having one PTS for similar reasons - he was not a happy horse for many reasons, and yes, I did have access to excellent trainers. The issues were pain related, and he had started bolt randomly. I would never have passed him on to anyone else, that would have been very unethical, and I had already spent several thousands on vets fees and trainers.
It’s not an easy reason to have a horse pts, and you will have to battle with yourself and people who think you haven’t tried hard enough. Posting this on a forum will always get a mixed response.
I still have moments when I feel huge guilt, I loved that horse. But I did have him pts out of love - he wasn’t happy, he was in pain, being handled by humans was stressing him out. He wasn’t enjoying being a domesticated horse.
