Disturbing horse owner behaviour

Nothing wrong in the "mummy/daddy" thing until it gets to anthropomorphizing and that is surely the danger.

It becomes disturbing when normal animal behaviour is explained as "naughtiness" and in terms more appropriate to the bad behaviour of small children! I do wonder about folk who talk in those terms!

I can think of more disturbing ways of treating a horse tbh....life's too short to be bothered about what someone wants to call themselves to their horse....!!!

Isn't the word "mum" a old word for boss anyway?

"dad" means 'giver of money' and a place to go to for a hug when "mummy" is being mean.

:D

Oh dear! Was also expecting something more serious, but amusing reading, nonetheless. :D

Am not guilty of calling ponies 'kids'. They're normally referred to as 'Field Vermin' or 'Moneymunchers'. It's the cat thing that worries me. Not only do they have a 'Mummy and Daddy', they are referred to as 'The Kids', one alternates between 'Black Fluffy Pudding' and 'Manky Old Git', whilst the other is called anything from 'Rosco', to 'Pudding Poo'. *Hangs head in shame*

In my defence, both cats are proper 'Mummy's Boys', wrestle like a pair of 6yr old boys if breakfast is late, curl up next to me/on my pillow (neglecting the poor OH) and probably get fed better than some people's kids. Yesterday they ate woodpigeon!

Yeah, I find the 'sexy' thing a bit weird :D
I do the whole 'mummy; thing though, it's just a bit of fun. ALL of my animals (2 horses, 2 dogs 1 cat) have 'voices' - Blaze and I chatter away when we are out hacking, and she sings, completely tunelessly 'lalalala' when she's happy :D
Jasmine swears like a navvy! When she spooks, everything is 'wtf is THAT!' or 'f off, I'm not doing that' I often threaten to wash her mouth out with soap. Mean mummy!! :D
Incidentally, my horses live out 24/7/365, are rugless (unless extreme weather) barefoot and fed nothing but grass and hay (when there's no grass!) and I am most definitely in charge!
I also am 53, have three grown up kids, 2 of them with good jobs in IT and 1 at a top Uni, was soppy with them when they were small but have always been the boss there too!
This thread has really made me laugh :D

You would never ever, ever ever ever catch me doing the daddies girl, daddies boy thing. No sir, not going to happen, not even on a blue moon night with flying pigs and hell frozen over. :p

Couldnt care less what people call their horses as long ss they look after them :D
One of mine is called " the auld bird " i really dont want to be her mummy
" the ancient bird"

I am Chester's Mummy :) He talks a bit like Dougal from Father Ted as he's Irish. He isn't over fed or over rugged but he is a bit pampered. Don't want kids, never will, so my hard earned cash is wasted on him instead :) He's happy, I'm happy, everyone's a winner.

I don't see how it's creepy at all. To me it's only a form of wording. Unless someone was going around thinking that they actually were the horses biological mother then yes, that would be creepy ;)

Sorry, but why not?????

I don't care if anyone wants to call themselves "mummy". Do what you like. You pay for it. Strange that it bothers people so much.

Ye Gods. Forget about it.

Could not have put it better myself. What is the big deal, I do not think it is creepy at all. I find it odd that it bothers some people so much....

We should argue about real issues like not calling ponies "PONIO" and smothering it in pink. Now that, IMO, is worth taking the mick out of.
:D

lol :D also guilty as charged, am sure I have used ponio on more than one ocasion, best leave now eh? ;):D

ETS: Just seen this

Lol and yes, this would be creepy :D

I call myself 'mum' when talking to my horse but wouldnt refer to myself as my horses 'mum' when speaking to someone else! ..................eg; "mums got a carrot for you" that type of stuff. Not offensive/harmful and my horse is in no way spoiled in terms of getting away with bad behaviour/ being overfed etc.

However.....I do know a woman who refers to herself while speaking on the phone to the vetrinary receptionist as ***'s mum.................:o:o

God if some you worry about simple things like an owner calling them their animals mummy which is completely harmless then I suggest you get out more

Can't believe anyone spends there time worrying about this at all! I couldn't give a rats a*se what anyone calls themselves or their horses.

Its only tongue in cheek anyway so why worry! Isn't saying its 'creepy' a bit melodramatic, come on....if someone was sitting in a derelict loft, rocking a foal to sleep in a babies cot, wrapped in crocheted blankets, now that would be creepy :D :D

Live and let live I say, it really doesn't matter.......

Any pet of mine is my baby and im mum - simple;).

You look after your pets just you do your children i.e, feed them, water them, brush their manes:rolleyes:, makes sure they arent in pain and are comfortable in the hot and cold months.

As long as the animals are being properly cared for does it really matter what people call themselves or their animals?

You should hear the conversations I have with my dogs:D

Although, to be honest, my small animal practice will call out " Fido's mum" into the waiting room :D or call your animal's name and add your surname.
I love it, cos no one can pronounce my Golden Retriever's name, Caoimhe. Much hilarity!
We get Coom-ha, Came-he :D
Anyone here care to have a go? It's Gaelic.

this , and that was how i interpreted the OP's post too, it's not specifically just the calling themselves mummy or daddy but the whole approach to most 'pets' these days. We have got 'softer' over the last 20 years, if you'd have called yourself an animals mummy 20 years ago you'd have been sectioned!!!:eek
Wanting a mini shetland to keep in your garden and take up to your bed at night( as seen on FB ) kind of proves how some people do see their animals as real life teddies rather than animals these days:rolleyes:
