A few years ago a horse mag printed a pull out poster, about road safety, aimed at drivers, showing them how to drive safely past horse riders.
We were encouraged to photocopy the posters and put them up around our areas, in car parks etc.
After reading _MizElz_ story, and as the summer gets closer and the roads get busier, who thinks that it would be a great idea, if we could ask Horse and Hound , if it could do the same thing.

Let's see if we can get as many names as we can on here.

So in the interest of educating the masses

Great!!
The more of you who think it is a good idea, the more likely Horse and hound will run it !

I hope.

I'm currently in the middle of doing an article with my local paper and its sister paper to hightlight/educate drivers how to pass horses on the road - that poster would be a good idea for that too :)

I think it is a great idea, we are planning a road safety day for our RC and hope to get the local paper to cover it, not because of unsafe riding, but to try and get the message out to drivers :)

The more we can educate people, the safer everyone will be.
Lots of people have veiwed this, but not posted, come on you guys, this affects us all!!

signed:D and echo about driving schools. I live in a semi rural area with a lot of horses and neither of my children were "taught" how to drive around horses despite training on local roads. They were already aware, of course, but many of their friends were not.

Dubsie, thats a great idea.
My friend is a driving instructor, she taught me, and she has horses, but i don't know if it is brought up in driving lessons generally.

Yes good idea, signed. Is there a way petrol/service stations could have copies near their tills to take away as a leaflet as some drivers may not stop to read a poster though guess something like that would have to be with agreement of that particular chain of petrol stations. Maybe I'm thinking too big here!

Great idea!!!

I really like people's suggestions for displaying the posters in driving schools, petrol stations, etc.! Maybe we HHO could organise this. We would need copyright agreement from the person who owns the poster (failing that, we could see if the BHS would do us a poster with permission to display in public), see if anyone on HHO is in the printing business and could do us a few thousand copies and then use HHOers around the country to take it to their local areas for display. If it all gets going I would imagine it would be easy to get H&H to print an article and from there we could see if we could attract the attention of local and national newspapers (maybe find a high profile rider to support the campaign?).

Am I thinking too big? I did get a bit exhited, but to be honest there are so many of us riders but we don't have the impact we should have given our sheer numbers, our presence in the countryside and our buying power!!!

Signed.

This is a great idea.

I have to say though, drivers don't just struggle with horses. I have started to ride my mountain bike, to improve my fitness for horse riding, and it seems that many people just have terrible difficulty overtaking. Even when I hug the kerb on and otherwise empty road, about 50% of the cars coming up behind me find it almost impossible to overtake, and I'm only doing about 15 mph absolute tops (not very fit yet).

Good idea !

Our yard is on a very busy main road with lots of lorries, We normally get alot of lorries from a certain quarry driving by. my husband does work for this certain quarry and it wouldn't be a problem distributing these posters/leaflets there. I have to say I have commited the cardinal sin in which that I don't buy horse & hound that often but would certaintly buy it if it had these posters in it .

Perhaps admin could write up their take on this thread ?

Brilliant idea, perhaps they could do an online downloadable poster as well as a pull out, as most people will find it easier to print multiple copies than to photocopy.

I hope H&H do this!!!

Sounds a great idea. Another good place for posters/flyers would be caravan sites. We have a holiday park nearby and most of the drivers on their way to and from there have no idea how to pass horses, and the fact that it only sounds like a car, but is actually quite a large "vehicle" can spook horses I have found.

Consider it signed.

Libraries (I'm a librarian!) are really good about displaying posters for free, especially if they are community / safety orientated so that may be another way to get the message out there.
