When I had my first horse PTS , I was in my 20’s and still lived at home. I didn’t tell anyone at home until after the event . I thought they might have tried to talk me out of it and it had taken such a lot of heart searching to make that decision and I knew it was the right one. My family were very supportive and I did feel a little guilty for not telling them earlier, hope your OH doesn’t make it more difficult for you , good luck

Thank you all.
It’s been postponed til the following Monday which is harder for me because I’d rather decide and do but he was originally my daughters. She had a great time with him. Hunting, bits of team chasing and eventing, he looks like a hairy little cob but he was a machine when he was healthier! I then hacked him when he retired from all that and she gave up.

Anyhow she’s away at Uni but will be back next weekend and wants to spend some time with him.
OH wants to bury him, that’s always been something really important to him and needs a bit of arranging.
So he had a week to be spoilt rotten and loved, I have a week to dread :(

I am thinking of you and am sending virtual support. It is such a hard thing to do yet one knows it is the right thing to do for your beloved equine.

So sorry you're having to do this, I hope your OH is more supportive this time around. When we had our dog pts I knew it was coming to that time but OH kept arguing that we weren't there yet, in the end I had to TELL him I was calling the vet and he accepted it OK, with the last dog I called the vet then told him so it couldn't be dragged out, it's pants when they bury their heads in the sand but hopefully he has reflected a bit on the last time and will be better this time. Sending you lots of virtual hugs and will be thinking of you on Tuesday x

If the vet agrees with you then you are absolutely making the right decision. I'm sure your OH is just upset about the situation and while it's unfortunate that they are disagreeing with you try and be kind to each other and understanding of each others point of view. I do not envy you it is the most awful part of animal ownership but it's the price we pay for loving them.

Now I’m having bit of a panic about my other horse.
I have two tiny ponies but the routine is the two big ones get turned out while I work a few hours and the ponies stay in. Then I get the two
Into ride one and Jake stays on the yard with the ponies and hay. Then they all go out together.
I don’t think I’ll catch ponies at riding time and they don’t need that much grass.
So many stressful issues :(
I worry my other horse isn’t going to like just two tinies
😩

Sorry you're having a week of dread, but pony will likely adore being spoiled rotten and I hope you have some good times with him. My horse adores tiny ponies, and am sure the HHO hive mind can come up with some solutions for you if your other horse doesn't. You have some time to figure it out.

If he doesn’t I do have an ex racehorse that’s retired and a companion at my friends, I’d feel awful as she adores him but I can get him home in theory. I’d kind of like him back really but he’s happy and friend and her horse are very happy with the arrangement so will hopefully make do

You're juggling so many balls to keep everyone as happy as they can be in this situation - I hope you don't forget yourself in all of this.

Is there any way you can start to introduce some small changes in your routine now so that it is not such a big change for the others afterwards?

So sorry to hear this, but sounds like you are doing it for the right reasons and as they say ‘better a day too early than a day too late’. I had to have my beautiful boy pts almost exactly two years ago so this is a very sensitive time for me too. He has navicular and was 17, and although lame at the time, in his mind he was young and healthy and except for his feet 😞 I know it was the right thing to do but it is hard. I’ll be thinking of you on Wednesday x

I don’t know. I’d like to for the others sake but it’s like I’m letting him know.
I feel terrible. Of course he’s been great today. That’s what I want. I want a last really good happy week but a bit of me doesn’t do I know it’s ok

You're not - you're just responding to your own brain that knows what's coming. He knows nothing about any of this and if you can make a few changes while still keeping him happy, then life will be easier for both you and the others afterwards.
Can you associate any changes with a very special treat for him at the time so that he welcomes the changes? Try not to over think it too much - you want to appreciate the time you have left with him.

What you are doing is putting your horse first and it is such a brave thing to do. I want to send all my love and understanding, and feel that after the deed is done, you will feel peace. Your lovely horse only knows about the now, and has had a happy and fulfilling life and will have a noble end. xxx
