the cost of insurance is not just about the insurer though, the horse you're insuring has a big impact too, one of mine was sub £40 pm for a few years but is now over £80 because of the class of use. I choose a higher excess of nearly £300 for her to keep the premiums down a bit. Foal has a lower excess because I figured I'm possibly more likely to claim on her policy and didn't want to be even more out of pocket if I had to.

Just for CD's benefit really... everyone has to evaluate their own circumstances. I'm someone who sees value in insurance for some horses but it's still a bit of a minefield and just saying you should be able to find a low premium and a low excess full stop is too simplistic.

First of all clearly you're with the wrong insurer, unless you think otherwise but for that excess fee I strongly dissagree and would question how much research and digging around you've done before applying. I found Emporium, whom has been mentioned a few times now and seems to have alot of good ratings over the net, have £170 or something like that. Which I found MOST do on average I might add. As for having a loan vs your animals suffering? So you'd rather jeperdise putting yourself in debt thus the possibility of losing them and thus them probably suffering the consiquences of your actions doing so thereafter? Yeah ok. As I said; crack on. As that old saying goes; you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.
I had done lots of research thank you, the policy covered dental work which a lot of insurers don't and my later claim was for dental work so actually saved me £1.3k so I'm happy with my policy thanks! I could probably find a cheaper policy now, but they paid out when a lot of insurers wouldn't so I am happy to pay it.

Like I've said before, not every suggestion will suit everyone, I have a well paid, secure job and am a landlord. I am happy that I can afford to "put myself in debt" without losing my animals. As I said before, my credit card is 0% APR. So it doesn't cost me anything to spread purchases. I have savings, I just choose to spread the cost rather than dip into savings. If I caveat every suggestion I make it would take me hours to reply. I'm not suggesting people take out the ridiculous payday loans with crippling APR. I just said 0% credit cards were a handy option and I think I even acknowledged in my original post they weren't an option for everyone.

My cat got hit by a car and the emergency vet wanted half the quoted fee upfront, which is standard practice. The quote was £1,600 so she wanted £800 there and then with the following £800 a few days later when he was released. I have insurance but they didn't pay me until 2 months later after the claim went through. A few months earlier my horse had their £1,800 surgery and treatment, luckily the vets were happy to be paid by the insurer. Then about a year later the dog had £1,600 of treatment which was paid upfront and then reimbursed by the insurer as the vet did not accept payment by the insurer as an option. This is the point I'm trying to make. Insurance is great and I'm all for it when it works, but I think it's important people have access to a back up plan for when either insurance refuse the claim or you have an expensive excess or the vets want to be paid first.

Need I remind you that this is a forum where people will state their views and opninions, especially if the OP asked for them? Yes, not every suggestion will suit everyone and people will give their feedback on that, including myself. I respect your views, believe it or not, but I don't agree to them and I'm entitled to say so. Heck, I still don't think you made the right choice... Why would dental be so important to other things? Like oh I donno, collic? Which has been menitoned and all most of you can say is euthanisation, which isn't right in my books. Like I said; some people have more money than sense.. I ain't going to repeat myself. Either way, views and opinions have been made and I'm sure the OP can form their own judgement and decisions with or without the responses really and personally don't thinkn this debate is very helpful to anyone so I suggest we stop this nonsense and move on. Each to their own as they say.
