Ooh! Thank you TFF and Amymay. I just can’t get Clodagh to like flatcoats! All mine have done obedience training and some of them competed. Yes, they have a light hearted sense of humour and fun but are mild mannered and easy to train and discipline. For some reason she has only met ones who have obviously been let down by their owners. I have friends whose flatcoats do the exact same job as Clodagh‘s labs and just as well!
We are NOT going to fall out about it but I find it frustrating!
We all like to criticise certain breeds, due to our differences en experiences. But it doesn’t mean that we don’t understand the appeal of ‘our’ or certain breeds.

And of course, we shouldn’t fall out over it.

I’ve never been a fan of any small fluffies but some new people up the road have a shih tzu and I’m in love!

While we're on the subject though about certain dogs grabbing your heart, I never thought twice about a Bischon until I became virtually acquainted with @AmyMay Daisy and now I need one.

Oh good, I have a 4 month old pup, am aiming for obedience training, she's very quick on the uptake!

Ref flatties, I regularly meet 2 x different owners when out hacking, with 4 flat coats between them, all are delightful and very well trained 😊

I’ve never met a well mannered flatcoat. They are, to me, the breed that creates the problems that other people on here have with labs.
I have only met a few, always thought I'd quite like one (along with the other gazillion breeds I want!) and never had an issue. I think this one was just young and stupid with a useless owner. She didn't once say 'Come' or even come down the path, she was very close, I could see her through the trees, standing ineffectually!

The bichon x I met today just cemented my idea that I need a small scruff in my life, preferably one that doesn't shed. I have tumbleweed clumps of hair from my lot, plus the associated mud and have resigned myself to having to change before I leave the house every morning! 😂

Cockapoo thing ran circles around Hermosa today, barking its head off, darting at her back legs. Owners shouting ineffectually at it. Had no chance of catching it. Every time he reached for it, the dog dodged his hands. The usual. Horse stood rolling her eyes. I flicked my long dressage whip at it when it got within range.

OH, walking with us, snapped at the owner that "horses kick" and he needs to keep his dog under control.

The chap apologised and said, "Thank you for restraining the horse."

I was sitting there on a loose rein. Not a lot of 'restraining,' though she's very good at stopping in the middle of a trail and waiting for a cue to go. But if she'd wanted to kick an obnoxious dog, as unlikely as that is, there wouldn't have been much I could do to prevent that!

The other day, we were out with Fin and we saw a dog walker with like five off lead dogs. I made eye contact, and the guy made no effort to put them on leads. A couple dogs looked more interested in the horse than I would have liked, and I said to OH, "What are the odds this guy knows every dog he walks well enough to be 100% sure that they will be fine with the horse, in a pack?" OH responded, "Not good enough." We changed routes and went off down a different trail.

Later in the hack, we saw them again, ahead of us. But we were catching up because the chap stopped every two seconds while his dogs sniffed things. Again, he looked at us but did not put anything on a lead. I let Fin graze to put more distance between us. At which point, two other people (not together) came down the trail with collies. About three dogs from the pack charged up to the other dogs. One of the owners seemed cool with it, but the other gathered their dog and marched off the other way, looking quite pi$$ed off.

I am beginning to wonder if there are just some fairly poor Labradors out there.

Someone I know has two from different litters, a black and a yellow. Black lab is a lovely, focused but willing dog who is always quite connected to her people and listens well. Yellow is really very tricky. She’s bolshy, snappy, and throws herself around on the lead to go for other dogs, cats, horses etc. She’s fine with people but she doesn’t seem to connect much. I find her really cold, and her eyes are disconcertingly hard.

Conformationally, black lab is a bit small but nicely put together. She has medium sized, soft eyes and a broad head but a more refined face. Yellow has a very large, coarse head with small eyes and is very straight through the hind leg to the point that she almost dishes her hind legs rather than bends them. She’s also very powerful in front but with quite a straight shoulder and short neck. The black one is leaner, more athletic and has an elastic, straight stride covering more ground.

Black is unregistered, from local working parents on a farm. Yellow is KC.

ETA - found google images to try to explain what I mean better

Black looks similar to this

Yellow is very pale but not dissimilar to this type but this dog is probably nicer.

The one that nearly killed Floydy looked like the yellow but was black. It had an enormous head. My poor boy is going to be scarred for life :( Amazingly psychologically hes just bounced back like nothing happened. He was even playing with a lab the other day and he usually cant be bothered with any dogs other than my other one, so I was amazed to see a short game with lots of play bowing and spinning going on

The lab is the most numerous dog in the country therefore meeting a bad mannered one is likely .
The problem is that people with overly friendly dogs are often very very thick .
The fact that their dog won’t bite seems to to blind them to the fact there dog is pita and may get bitten itself .
When this is teamed with zero recall which was the issue I got into with Pearl it’s infuriating.

Labs are victims of their own success but they are bred to work and need training they don’t like boredom they need to respect their people or else they are pains .

Not sure if this will work, but poor little dog

Disgusting that the cowardly owner refused to give her name, fabulous that someone knew it! I do think we need to toughen up on irresponsible owners-obviously! Poor little dog, that could easily have been fatal.

It was me today :(

Whippet has had a few day care dates recently that have apparently caused some bad habits and he felt it okay to belt over and briefly annoy some poor woman's Cockerpoo in a typical over exuberant sighthound play style.

Back on the long line you go. Little devil.

I fully expect to have that twang of guilt for at least the remainder of this week 😣

The difference between you and the twits I meet are that you are aware that your dog is being a pain and did something about it! I expect you apologised too.

This is the thing isn't it. There will be few people have perfect dogs, they can all do something to surprise us. It's the people who don't care if their dog is a nuisance who are the problem.

On the contrary. There are those who pull into a carpark and open the boot and let the dogs spill out all over the place. What does it matter if there are moving vehicles, they are sure to blame someone else.
Since some folk do that with their children, it's no surprise that they do the same with their dogs!

This boils my piss.

What sort of scummy asshole buys an animal that they know they cannot afford to look after properly!?

A poxy consultation fee! Come on!

PETS ARE A PRIVILEGE!

I HATE people. I really do.
I have Madam Carrie Cat insured to the hilt with Petplan. £20pm. However, I have to pay the first £100 of any claim. I have reasonable OAP pensions, due to having a long professional career with a Local Authority, so I hope that any illnesses or accidents that MCC suffered would be paid for, one way or the other. However, if I didn't, I would go without to ensure that she was seen ASAP and received whatever treatment she needed.

Just re-read the above: Madam Cat's middle names are "Don't Even Think About It" and "What's In It For Me?" She will be charming on the first stroke and teeth 'n' claws on the second. I always warn visitors to approach with caution and Dreamies and "Don't Pick Her Up!" Even I don't pick her up! A pat with a newspaper in a hand at the end of a fully extended arm is the nearest that I am prepared to venture if Her Grumpiness is in a "I want to be alone." mood.

Eugggh. I'm just back from walking Fodhla and ran into a dog and owner I dread running into. Her idea of walking her dog is chain smoking on a bench while he runs riot. Luckily Fodhla is pretty neutral toward most dogs especially when she knows I have toys.I ignored him and Fodhla and I walked off and he started following and she just kept shouting it's name. Then he started approaching Fodhla and getting in her space so I stood between them while at this point she's miles away shouting his name over and over. At this point I bellowed 'ARE YOU GOING TO COME GET YOUR DOG OR WAIT TIL I GIVE HIM A SHOE UP THE HOLE'. And then 'your dog has zero recall why are you calling his name'. Normally I'd say something like 'can you get your dog please' but I'm sick to death of this woman.

Most dog owners round here are decent but it's the same ones over and over that are a pain in the arse.

I could just as easy put this on the happy thread though 'today I was mobile enough to walk my dog'
