I had to have my beautiful old friend put down today.
He was 25 years old and had been with me all his life - in fact I carried from the field he was born in up to the stable yard for the vet to check him over, he was about 10 minutes old and could stand, but was still a bit wobbly to walk too far!
He got me through so much over the years, had been my confidant and friend. He knew all my secrets and shared my happy times and my sad times. 24 hours after my son was born, I was at the yard, baby in a papoose to share my beautful boy with my friend. When my sister died suddenly he took me in hand allowed me to cry and cry, comforted me with his warm breath on my face, then made me smile by gently taking off my glasses and standing there holding them in his mouth! When my husband passed away, again, he was there to take charge and make me realize that life went on and I needed to pull myself together and make a life for myself and my son. and when I met my new husband, Mate looked him over and gave me the thumbs up!!
Today, I sat on the stable floor with his head in my lap and told him that it was time to hand him back to god, and he looked at me with his wise eyes and thanked me for being there for him. He stood up when the vet arrived, and took the sedative and pain killer so that we could move him to a soft grassy patch where the sun was shining. He breathed his comforting warm breath on my face one last time, and welcomed the peace that came to meet him.
I shall miss him for always and look forward to when we meet again.
Just wanted to share this with people who will understand my grief and my broken heart ...
