Liver issue/grumpy?

On feed, mine with ulcers wouldn't eat any of her meds/supplements but will eat absolutely anything with linseed and half a handful of grain that has molasses (but no alfalfa, which sent both of my ulcer-y ones doolally). Vet said that amount of grain was fine and the linseed is good for them. And it was fine to put the Abler ulcer stuff in that first thing. The amount of grain being negligeable.

Glad you've had some good news Michen. Hopefully scope does come back clear and then you know the worst is that you've thrown away a load of money but Boggle is happy 🤣

Absolutely! Or if he has them, that they've healed or on their way. I'd have loved to have scoped him before starting treatment but I don't think I could have waited 3 weeks to do something given the signs he was showing. And, I think if he doesn't have them, it would be a small miracle.

Nothing constructive to say other than god these horses put us through it and are such a worry when they aren’t right (and even when they are we’re just waiting for the next thing to go wrong). It’s bad enough at home with everything being familiar and having your trusted vet, physio, farrier etc. to call on. It must add another level of stress being in a different country without that support. That boy certainly keeps you on your toes, never a dull moment with Boggle! Fingers crossed he is better soon🤞🏻

Yeah, that was the panic I suddenly found myself in. Which is silly as there are plenty of professionals here, just not ones I have a long standing relationship with. On tuesday all I wanted was to put him on a plane back to England! Ha, he'd have been so cross, he hated the rain.

He may be tricky in some ways but he makes life so easy in others! And, there's absolutely nothing I wouldn't do for him financially or otherwise.

It’s not about the money either lol. Given the current bills I’m racking up that’s the least of my worries. I do not think the barn hands will get a syringe into him. I do not want to risk half of it going out of his mouth which I suspect is what will happen.
I am confused that he is okay with Gastroguard but not okay with a syringe? Isnt gastroguard given in a syringe? Or do you mean something different?

Can you get saracen feed there? You could try putting it in the recovery mash my Louis will eat his prascend in a small amount of that, its not too bad a feed compared to some and you probably wouldn't need loads.

Louis also gets a pulled muscle at the top of his hind leg sometimes it goes solid and he looks stiff with it, I tend to use an Equine sports massage person I know literally after one session and his fine, I don't know if they have that kind of therapist there but might be worth a try if you can find one.

Have you ever given Gastroguard? It doesn’t seem to taste very unpleasant to them and is kinda thick and small so easy to give.

Anyway, it’s a moot point because now I’m happy with his liver he can continue to have the other stuff in a bit of not so perfect feed.

Yes, I have given Gastroguard. I wasnt arguing, just trying to make sense of what you wrote. Did I understand, he's okay with Gastroguard syringes, but not okay with bigger syringes which you fill yourself of other supplements? And that is the distinction. Both are syringes, but the gastroguard is okay?

Totally! And I’m chuffed re liver. I guess maybe he’s drinking more with the temperature fluctuations.

If he doesn’t have ulcers I’ll be feeling pretty foolish about the three weeks of treatment and expensive scope to find out 🤣

Not foolish at all. You have to investigate to be able to help. If you choose the wrong investigation the first time, you choose the next most probable one and process by elimination. It is all any one of us can do.
I chose the wrong route before ‘scoping, but I got the diagnosis in the end.

Yes, the bigger dosing syringe which is harder to administer and get in his mouth, then he starts mucking around. The Gastroguard is a small thin syringe and for whatever reason he’s not fussed by that. Same with the other horse at the barn.

I think it’s called Kentucky horse feed or something but they don’t have the same change- releve only I believe. Which I used to feed him when eventing! Haven’t found a stockist nearby yet but I am going to ask my local big one if they could. Love that stuff and now I don’t need to worry about the liver it should work for him.

It's great stuff for getting water into them after work my friend gives all her horses a feed of it every time they are ridden, definitely worth a try it's the only thing I can put prascend in that he will eat everything else just gets left, prascend is very bitter so hard to disguise its better dissolved and mixed in that way.

Yes I used to feed it post event. It doesn’t exist here. Only releve. Shame. But thanks for reminding me as releve worked well for him as a daily feed. Cost here- $48 a bag. LOL.

Out of interest Michen - Are the wages there correspondingly much higher? If not, how on earth do people over there afford horses?!

I’m not sure tbh, my base salary increase (for, technically a demotion) was 25% increase. Plus a less tax which probably makes it nearer 30%. I guess yes, if all professions are paid similarly higher.
