Lost my Lovely Jessie hound and need your advice please

Can I thank you all again for your kind words and sage advice. YCBM is correct regarding this forum being a great place with some wonderful people. I love being a part of it :)

I finally got a response which read ' dommage '. This means shame, or 'a shame 'in this case. At least I think it does but I guess she could be saying shame on me for not saying yes.
Then a bit later she added that we'd missed the chance of a spectacular dog. So uncool to guilt trip me like that, so I rummaged a little and found a post dated 4th April. That's quite a bit of time between now so I can't help thinking she's been trialed somewhere and it didn't work. I don't know and I probably never will but I do feel a little sad and really hope she finds a good home.

I'm so sorry for your loss, it sounds like Jessie had the best life a dog could have with you. {{{{{{Hugs}}}}}}

No matter how lovely that rescue dog might look, I think you had a very lucky escape from dealing with that rescue. It's not their dogs fault, but sending multiple messages, being keen, telling you to hurry up to decide, because there's other people interested, and add to that, not being allowed to meet neither dog, nor current foster placement, nor being told what the rehoming fee would be, in advance, all of it only made me think of bargepoles. You didn't sound harsh at all in your first post, you sounded very sane.

Their unprofessional responses to your rejection (and again more than one response, I mean come on, one was enough), only adds to making them sound irresponsible. Hounding potential new homes, trying to guilt trip them into making quick decisions, surely if you should avoid getting dogs from irresponsible breeders, the same should be said about not getting dogs from irresponsible rescues.

Hope you find a new companion to Odes/Nickel, and the rest of your family, without too much more hassle.

So sorry about your girl.
Another gut feeling the rescue lady sounds weird. I could understand not being able to view in person in lockdown but now you should be able to at least meet him outside surely. The fee bit is just plain ridiculous.

I really like the French stag hounds, their heads, being flatter than our foxhounds, are very attractive. I'm not sure if you want anything with quite that much drive though!

I'm having a total mental name blank on the breed that is used as a gundog in the UK but looks like a hound. Come on gundog people...

I'm not a gun dog person but...
Bracco Italiano?
Vizsla?

I did think of a Visla but dear god , a Weim and a Visla ......
Jess was perfect for both the Weims as she had oodles of energy but was by nature quite a quiet dog so taught both to be chilled in the house and people visiting were not to be eaten. I love Weims but the guarding bit has to be discouraged and she was a great teacher.

If hound breeds, preferably with long-ish ears, suits you to own, I've read the following about Italian Spinone, "can be a bit clownish", "Never bossy or whiny, unless he does not see humans as pack leader, this gentle soul loves children, those he knows, and those he does not."

Or how about going down "a bit" in height, Basset Bleu de Gascogne, is supposedly a bit calmer in their temperament

Or Basset Artésien Normand

I've heard that some Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen can be a bit stubborn and headstrong, but they're cute

Thank you , thank you for hugs and more kind words:):)

I love Great Danes. What an awesome dog they are, but the short lifespan would break my heart even more than losing Jess has.

So Iv'e just had the first of the ' chien de chasse ' are not pets response from a pissy hunter asking me by pm what I want to hunt and me replying truthfully to test if things had changed in 13 years. Obviously they haven't .
Onward.
I'm going to put my brave pants on and go and visit the grumpiest hunter in the valley tomorrow. He wouldn't speak to us for 2 years until he realised we weren't total aholes trying to stop country traditions. We also take all the lost dogs home, including his, or keep them here for collection.
He's a bit scary but actually really loves his dogs and we often meet up in the woods when he's in between the season.
I crashed into a full on get together once involving about 20 hunters and 30 odd dogs whilst wearing pink hi viz and it's embarrassingly lodged in my brain as one of my many less than glorious moments. The silence and then sudden talking as I scuttled away.......

Oh look at them all:):):)
Gorgeous, but it's the Basset Blue that wins!
I'm not too keen on hairy dogs. I mean I like them , they are lovely, but with the flufter cats i'd prefer to keep the dog side of the family short haired.:)

what about german short haired pointer, athletic and biddable if trained properly, or if it has to be a hound there are plenty of podencos in rescue or beagle if you want smaller

I’m so sorry about Jess. I’m sorry she didn’t go speedily, a fighter to the last, obviously!

What about another Weim to match the pup? Are you still in touch with crazy far away breeder?

Was that when you needed a wee?! ?

A German Pointer was my second choice after another sanglier hound. I think the match with a Weim would work very well. Similar but easier to train. Also they are very beautiful dogs. OH is not so keen for some reason but can't really say why. To my eye they are almost like Weims in a different colour, just less mad !!

Merci chérie xxx. Crazy far away breeder sadly got cancer and is properly poorly.

I utterly adore my Weim but i'm just not sure about having two CT.

:D:D:D:D . NOOOOOOOOOO.

Fingers crossed Mr Grumpy Hunter has just the right dog for you.

My sister has owned Italian Spinoni for years, and while they have superb temperaments, they are fairly cumbersome and their beard collects all sorts of detritus as well as soaking up water every time they have a drink ... and then they shake their heads o_O

Really sorry to hear about your loss.

Just wanted to say don't discount the Vizsla if meeting the hunting man doesn't go to plan. We have a Vizsla who is as quiet as a lamb in the house (well... Mostly!) and from the evidence of my FB Vizsla groups the Weim/Viz combo is popular and seems to work well.
