Vet confirmed 15-17 years old this morning. He checked him over and said hes fit for his purpose as our happy hacker and no concerns raised.
I have accepted the £500 partial refund from the dealer and although absolutely furious with them, still love our horse and he will be staying where he is loved and looked after. I received some really nasty, threatening phone calls from the dealer and although I know my rights the situation has taken a knock on my mental health. The thought of court and additional stress and costs I will incur just makes me feel worse. And yes id of likely won, but that did not guarantee my money back in my pocket.

Lesson learnt and will happily put them on dodgy dealer facebook groups and name them on here if anybody wants to know more. Thanks all for their support on this x

Let me put it this way for you...

The dealer has PLENTY of money since he probably made about a 500% profit on the horse. He does this all the time so has made substantial profits on every other horse he has sold.
You can ask the Irish guards to mediate - they're usually incredibly nice and can be the 'man power' you need sometimes. Trust me that they help deal with this stuff often. The dealer will eventually give you the money to not have the hassle of going to court if they know that's their only option. I would ask for about 1/3 back and give a date you need it by before you go to court.

It's very easy to get upset by these things when you should be getting ANGRY!

Best of luck :)

It is againt forum rules to name them here but do absolutely plaster the name all over FB.

I am glad that the vet found nothing to worry about and that Jet is no older than 17. I think you are doing the right thing in the circumstances to accept a small refund and move on with your lovely new horse. Block the dealer now so he can't get to you. And focus on Jet.

I am not sure what basis you have for that statement, just the opposite is true in almost all cases! The Gardaí are highly unlikely to become involved in this as it is very much a private matter between the seller and the buyer, regardless if they bought from a dealer I don't think you would have them rushing to help you! Also the OP is based in the UK so not sure of what value advice to use the Gardaí is, unless I have missed something? 🤷‍♀️

I really do understand why this has knocked your for six and not surprised you just want to chalk it off to experience and move on. At least the very good news is the vet has passed him as fit and not older than the suspected 17. Do plaster him all over the dodgy dealer sites on Fb though, it does help alert others to the chancer.

I wish you many happy years with your lovely cob and hopefully all this horrible start to buying him will soon be a distant memory.

Apologies if I'm wrong I thought she said she is based in northern Ireland but bought it in south of Ireland!

Also ETA I'm equally happy you settled to keep him - I'm sure youll have lots of fun together!

If you mean an Garda Siochana, the Irish police force, rather than the Irish Guards regiment of the British Army, they will hopefully politely chortle softly and explain that it's a civil matter and nothing to do with them.

ETA - I see Mrs J has already covered this, and further that you're not even in Ireland, so even less likely.

Well done for putting your mental health first. I hope you get your £500 back from the dealer very soon and can move on from this horrible experience and enjoy Jet.

I am glad the vet thought he was OK.

I think a few months down the line, you will appreciate what a little gem he is and his age is probably a blessing as he is mature and has experience.

I am so glad you have decided not to let this little blip spoil your enjoyment on finding a wonderful horse. I wish I could let you know how lucky you are that you found one who fits you.

I'm glad Jet passed his vetting and hope the money is in your account now. You could of course ask Trading Standards to check this person is registered as a business and not selling as a private individual, also see if Inland Revenue might be interested in making sure his/her tax return is all tickety boo.

Another one who's so glad the vet has seen him and thinks he's good. He's utterly gorgeous! I'm glad you've got some money back at least, I'd definitely be naming the dealer on the dodgy dealer FB pages.

Now enjoy that lovely horse of yours!

Jet looks like an absolute diamond and I’m so happy that he’s everything you wanted (albeit a bit older). For what it’s worth, I think you’ve done the right thing.
I’d definitely stick the dealers name on some FB groups though, harassing you with threatening calls is not ok and people need to know that’s how they operate.

Glad you had a result. You may well feel you have overpaid for an older horse but if he has made you happy since you've had him then he is well worth it. Nothing better than having a safe, reliable horse and the fact that he's a handsome chap too is priceless. Time to breath a sigh of relief and enjoy. He's gorgeous.

So pleased to hear that the vet has passed Jet as suitable for your requirements. I would much rather hear that and that the pony is older than thought rather than the pony is younger than thought but crocked.

Safety and reliability are priceless in a pony especially for children. I expect you will have many happy years together.
