Ok so after a few years of a nightmare horse owning….in short, waited 30yrs for right time and £ to have own horse (had ponies for kids etc but this was for me!) …I bought a super well bred 3yo Connie….after backing him he just wouldn’t come sound, had surgery, the works and in the end sadly had him PTS at 6yrs old?….

I couldn’t find anything rideable with a small budget a the time (of course insurance wouldn’t cover his loss) so ended up buying a couple of youngsters to keep me busy over the winter, as you do! They were super but the 3yo wasn’t looking like she’d go over 15hh and also being a little quite spooky, I decided that (especially after my back herniated just before Xmas!) that backing youngsters was not for me anymore!

I recently sold them to a fab producer and with a bit of savings, I now have a reasonable-ish budget (8k) to try and find myself a little all rounder heart horse, hopefully!

The thing Is I really have my heart set on an over 15.2 dun sports type?…I don’t need a show standard type or a world beater who can jump over 1m, just an all rounder…don’t even mind if it’s green, as long as it’s seen a bit and is sane enough. I have put wanted ads up but AIBU to think I will get this type for my budget?! I thought id post on here to see if anyone can share their knowledge of buying/selling and if someone has a Dun to go to a lovely forever home, where they will be cherished, ha! Thank you?

You have massively reduced what's avaliable to you but wanting a Dun.
If you want safe, sane, sensible, all rounder, seen a bit, over 15.2 you are competing with a huge amount of buyers in the market and if you want
Dun sporthorse you are reducing what is avaliable.
You would need to increase your budget (significantly I would expect) and be prepared to wait.

I'm very fussy in what I want, no greys, or coloureds, simply because I am just not as keen on light coloured horses, no offence to anyone, we all have our preferences, I'm sure there's those that don't like bays with white blazes too :D.

But I've always had exactly the type of horses I've wanted within a very particular age, height and breed bracket.

But I think one colour preference might make your hunt a lot longer.

Try this link, I know most are too small/young but there's a few in there (57 to be precise)

Duns and pallys especially are not in abundance in bigger horses

I dont have a colour preference, I do have a type though ?

Thanks id already seen her but she’s in Ireland and above budget ?
She is probably above budget BECAUSE she is a buckskin though. We have been shopping for a friend recently and the Buckskin Premium seems to run to about 2k ?

Friend wants a grey connie and even with that very popular colouring the limitation is a pain!

Are you really set on a dun? Its quite hard to get them over 14.2 really ?
Yep, it’s what I’ve always had in my head …annoyingly I always saw them when I wasnt looking! So I know they’re out there ! Been sent lots of different colours which are all so lovely but I’m not ready to give up the dun dream quite yet!

Yes prob…so annoying as I don’t remember them being sought after when I was younger typically!

The girl who I sent my gelding to when he was backed has a lovely rising 4 dun by Tullabeg Fusion, believe she was backed last year and has now been turned away for winter. She was advertised for sale in the autumn but I know she still has her. Based in Devon. Not entirely sure on height or price, but she's lovely looking. I can pm her details if interested?

I do think for unusual colours they do usually cost a bit more - but that one, with Templebrady breeding is never going to be cheap, proper performance Connie!

There's nothing wrong with being fussy, so long as you're prepared for it to take you longer to find what you want. My main issue with colours like dun/ buckskin is that they can add a premium to the price! So you may get the right colour, but may not get quite as nice a horse for your money if that makes sense.

You can always start of being fussy and then, further down the line, decide to open your search up to different colours if you're really not finding what you want.

When they show it (it looks to be a mare, is called lady and in the written ad is called a mare, in the video its referred to as a gelding) on the measuring stick its only 14hh.
I think they have just uploaded the wrong video, as there is also an advert for the (completely different) horse in the video (same seller). If I were interested in the mare, I'd ping them an email to point out the mistake (they link their website in the advert).

Fair, my knowledge of Connie breeding only goes as far as "heard that name a lot". That seller has another Templebready/Clover Hill mare (also buckskin) for 12k as well as a 14.2 full Connie gelding for 11k so no shortage on that yard by the looks of things.

With noting to OP that her prices include transport to the UK, she knows who she wants to sell her buckskin connies to ?

I'm the same.

You've got a horse (hopefully) for 20 plus years so you might as well get what colour you want from the get go. To me its no less as important as getting the height and age bracket and sex I want too.
