my inner genetics nerd is weeping at this thread 😂 best of luck finding your yellow pony though OP!

It's funny, I've learned a little about genetics and colour just from reading HHO threads - we're lucky that there are some experts on here and it's really opened my eyes. I have to say though, I am now super confused about the difference between dun and buckskin.

OP out of interest does it have to be a dun or is buckskin ok too?

Whilst visually very superficially similar on the molecular level buckskin and dun are quite different indeed. Both are modifiers which change the underlying base coat but that's where the similarities end.
Buckskin is a dilution caused by the cream mutation over a bay base coat; this mutation makes both melanin (black pigment) and phaeomelanin (red pigment) look paler by having a lower concentration of pigment molecules in the hair shaft.
The dun mutation means the pigment molecules are assymetrically distributed within the hair shaft and can happen over any base coat colour - akthough actually it is the non dun form of the gene which is the mutation, as the original wild type colour of all horses was bay dun.

I always say i have a ‘true’ dun as he has a dorsal stripe and zebra markings on his front legs.

Thanks all…I did find my dream horse back in February…just what I was after if a little green! But coming on well so far …wasn’t quite what the dealer described initially And nearly sent him back at one point but decided to keep him and glad I did now…here he is 😁❤️
