Duns and pallys especially are not in abundance in bigger horses

I dont have a colour preference, I do have a type though ?
They are also sods. Yellow horses have the yellow gene of evil.
I am very lucky to have a 17.2hh bright yellow buckskin.
He is extremely beautiful, and people stop me all the time to tell me so. However, he has also hospitalised three people, two of whom he put in a coma.

The yellow streak of evil runs strong ?

I'm the same.

You've got a horse (hopefully) for 20 plus years so you might as well get what colour you want from the get go. To me its no less as important as getting the height and age bracket and sex I want too.

i agrée…i ended up going with a different colour first time round and still used to look longingly at duns/buckskins!
The girl who I sent my gelding to when he was backed has a lovely rising 4 dun by Tullabeg Fusion, believe she was backed last year and has now been turned away for winter. She was advertised for sale in the autumn but I know she still has her. Based in Devon. Not entirely sure on height or price, but she's lovely looking. I can pm her details if interested?

Thank you but Devon just that little bit far unfortunately

Have personally confirmed yellow gene of evil in cats and hamsters, very good to know it also holds true for horses ? and not even just the girls!

The only dun pony I've known personally was a cantankerous old git at my childhood RS, bit my mother and bruised to the bone but he was still a yard favourite!!

Agreed although mine wasn't evil just bonkers. Many years ago H&H dedicated an edition of the magazine to duns with the headline 'No such thing as a bad dun' or similar. I mentioned it to my vet who disagreed as I could never keep mine sound.

I've just added her photo as my avatar.

ETA: Just remembered my friends old dun pony who was completely evil. No children were allowed in the field when he was out!

Yep. Every yellow horse I’ve known (and there have been a lot) has had the yellow streak of evil. Some haven’t been as ridiculously naughty as my boy, others have been even worse.
I love a yellow horse, but there is something in them that definitely isn’t for the faint hearted.
OP, check out the Ivy Stud. I’ve worked with their top stallion Ace a lot, and he is absolutely the nicest stallion I’ve ever dealt with. I’ve known a lot of his babies and they tend to be lovely (albeit with the yellow streak of evil in them hahaa).

One of the vets I work with most agrees re the yellow gene. We were discussing that particular article in H&H just before Christmas. He said he’s never met a yellow horse that doesn’t have SOMETHING. They’ve all got it. Personally I love it, but there are about three people I know who can ride my horse without risk of death ?

At the height you are looking for you are more likely to find buckskin...could you not compromise slightly?? I understand about being drawn the certain colours...Im not a fan of greys, palomino, dun, buckskin (pale horses in general lol) but am a sucker for a big coloured :) My two are tri colour and sooty buckskin but both were purchased purely on temperament (with height and sex a factor too...I like boys best :) )

If you fb search Leeann lawson, the family is selling a nice 14.2 dun gelding. Haven’t read whole thread but I know the Lawsons. Very straightforward people, children bring on ponies to support sj habit! Five minutes from Aberdeen airport.

There's nothing wrong with wanting a specific sort of horse, be as particular as you like! However the more particular you are the longer you may have to wait, the further you might want to travel and you may need to pay a premium for something "rare". Good luck with your search, I hope you find exactly what you want.

I looked after a lovely Dun pony, great temperament, fantastic dressage test, so polite and easy but with real talent on the flat, he hated cross country though and would just grind to a halt and stand in the middle of the course regardless of what ever his rider did, he never threw any hysterics even when he didn't want to go-he just stood there.
He was a small 14.2hh a lot more than your budget at 20k (if I remember right) he had evented a couple of times at 80cm but not completed and that was about 9 yrs ago.
On xrays at vetting he was found to have a bone chip in his fetlock so my boss didn't by him she leased him for 6 months but he wasn't what they were looking for as they wanted a older teenagers eventer so he moved on.
She still queried buying him for a slightly lower price despite the bone chip before I said that was daft.

Sorry Starzaan I usually agree with you but I have 2 duns/buckskins and also know several others who are all fabulous!

OP if you really want a 15.2 dun sports horse your budget is a bit unrealistic. Duns/ buckskins of that height are highly sort after and unusual so generally higher priced. I sold a 14.2 dun Connie for your budget before the covid price hike. If he had been 15.2 he would have been more expensive. 3 years ago I bought a 15.1 dun/buckskin traditional irish sports horse (connieXTB) unbacked 3 year old for only slightly less.

I totally understand your love of duns/buckskins - I adore them - but you would be better to widen your search.
