Question

Why do you nwant to breed from him?
Do you have the facilities to keep a stallion?
I'm afraid your friend has misinformed you. If you read ANY literature on breeding or look up articles on the internet you will see that he should be fertile now.
In fact it is quite possible if none of the mares he has been running with are in-foal that you/he have a problem and he will always be infertile.
Incidentally there is no need for stallions to be badly behaved.
I have known very well-mannered stallions who ride out with mares, hunt, graze while ignoring mares riding past their field and generally know what is acceptable behaviour BUT they have to be taught this by some-one who knows what they are doing.
I'm afraid stallions are not for novices, please have him gelded asap.

Or your best bet might be to send him to Franch?

You won't make any money from a colt that has no pedigree breeding papers, so you are fooling yourself there. I suspect the only reason he has not managed to get any mares in foal, is that he is too small ?

You are very irresponsible and the yard you keep your colt at must be run by a complete idiot if they allow you to keep an un-castrated male out in a field with mares.

How anyone so ignorant of basic horse care can own a horse completely amazes me.

I've never said this before - but TROLL ALERT

My mare would NEVER be allowed out with an ungelded horse full stop!

Yeah ive got to say if i had a mare ide b pretty annoyed if a stallion was bought on the yard, if he was seperated from them its a little better but theres still the problem that he could get in with the mares :S could you not move to a breeding yard if your serious about breeding him?

Guesswho is his show name. My mate said she would love to breed from him! I am not ignorant I have owned him for a year and for my second horse ever I feel very proud that I can handle a colt!

My friend has said he will be fine and cannot cover them yet when he can I will move him or ask for the mares to be moved. My friend is a training vet are any of you?

Geld him.
Put it on account and pay your vets back in monthly installments. Alot of vets are flexible about payment.
There is too much breeding in this country and too many unwanted horses as a result of it. Just because you have a stallion doesn't mean he is worth breeding from. No matter how cute you think he looks.
If you were at my livery yard and your horse was out with my mare, as Nailed has said I would be baying for your blood!
The stallion at our yard is kept in a stable on his own, seperate from the main stable block, and he has his own paddock with fencing that is over 6ft tall!
Seperate him from the herd and geld him. Calmers will do nothing if he still has both of his balls.

Hum... your 'friend' obviously hasnt studied conception yet then.. =oP

He can cover now, and Ive seen colts cover at 10 months..

Your coming across as pretty ignorant. and obvioulsy by the fact you want to put him on a calmer.. you CANT handle a colt.. LMFAO

Get a grip ffs !

How about if you wont listen to anyone on here , then perhaps ring a proper "qualified vet " and ask him .

Your friend is a training vet , I think they might need abit more training especially in biology

If i had no idea my 3 year old colt could cover and someone told me he could..... who ever that person was....... I would look on the internet right away and ring my ACTUAL vet and be absolutly sh1ting myself that one of the mares in the field were pregnent........

I am not on a wind up. I have not said anything that should make it seem so. I rescued him from horsesmart and some gyspies. I dont understand why you are all being mean and missing the point of my post WHAT CALMER DO I USE I HAVE A 16YR OLD GIRL WHO IS SCARED OF MY HORSE and need a calmer that works. I love my yard and dont want to move if the others dont like it they can move!!1

Your fully fertile "stallion" is being silly to handle on the way to the field most probibily at the pospect of mares because he is turned out IN A HERD OF MARES.
GELD HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Criteria for horse keeping it's balls:
Performance
Conformation
Temperament
Breeding
Colour

Some may want to juggle them around a little appart from colour is ALWAYS last. Yearlings regularly cover mares because people don't think they're mature enough but they're horney teenagers! They may not be physically mature but they damn sure want to be!

Get him away from those mares and get him cut. If he doesn't really have stallion potential it's not fair on him let alone all the sub standard foals he could produce that will end up down the sales no matter how friendly and cute they are!

You can see by my sig how much rescuing it required.

And FWIW I am a Veterinary Nurse. And obviously recieved far better training than your friend. Who probably wants to actually turn up to lectures if they want to qualifiy at any stage

Hmm, school holidays, someone a bit bored...?! This has to be a wind up or a very stubborn, ignorant owner (I hope it's the former...)
