...we stopped thinking we had the right to assess other people's horse management, and find it wanting.

Where do people get off thinking they have the definitive opinion as to what is or isn't acceptable for other people to do with their animals? These views are often based on less than full information, and in fact come from idiots.

Maybe, if you are a vet, a farrier, or an instructor, or a dentist - then your opinions are valid.

If you are just a smart-*rse bitchy owner, then keep your views to yourself or if you are really concerned, call BHS welfare or WHW.

I hate interfering busybodies spoiling horse owners' enjoyment.
Rant over.

Oh dear , has somebody upset you ??? :D I get that impression.

I must admit, Iv interfered before and told an owner when their horse was being neglected and mis treated by the loaners.
I had no problem doing that and would do it again after witnessing the poor horse eating her own stable from hunger.

Well said ;)

So if I see a horse in a field in the typical stance of a laminitic I shouldn't (with 40 years of horse ownership) phone up the owner who is a FBHS and tell them?

That isn't interfering in my book -it is keeping an eye out for a neighbour. Calling in a welfare group without talking to the owner would be out of line.

You have to take each an every situation as an individual and try to apply some commonsense.

Why would the FBHS (of whom I know many) not be able to recognise it herself?

He might not have seen it -been at a show or elsewhere for that day. Might have just not seen the mare for several hours since turning out that morning. Me phoning meant the mare was sorted out about four hours before they would have fetched her in. (true case).

Have you been reading my mind Shils? (What a silly question, of course you have . . . ).

Why do people feel it's acceptable to stick their oar in pass judgment on other people's riding, horse care/management, knowledge, etc.?

Just today, I saw/heard some real rudeness. Livery A was looking for someone to school/hack out her horse so offered Livery B (who is a nice little rider) the opportunity to sit on him. Said horse is a shire cross who has alot of fun buttons to push - in his day he was an amazing dressage horse . . . piaffe, spanish walk, half pass - you name it. He's a big, strong, opinionated lad. Livery B got on great with him in the school so decided to take him out on the gallops. Horse got a little over-excited, met some other liveries coming back from a hack, including Livery C, and had a little mini bolt. All made it safely back to the yard . . . but I happened to overhear Livery C pretty much slagging off Livery B for not being able to control the horse . . . in her words the poor girl who got carted was "a wally." I hear people giving opinions on how well-rugged (or not) other people's horses are, on their choice of farrier/vet/dentist, on their choice of bedding (for goodness' sake). Just the other day, I had a fellow livery tell me that my vet was "rubbish" because he advocated keeping Kali in his box for his suspected laminitis - according to her laminitics should be out.

Having read certain threads on here, I sure as heck will not be discussing any major decisions I make about Kal with anyone but my closest, most trusted horsey friends.

What is wrong with some people?

Ok Shils I will disagree with u to make u happy. You cannot make a sweeping statement like that- just being nosey and interfering for the sake of it isn't what I persOnally like- but there is a time and place when I think sometimes if there is a welfare concern you should get involved.... I have had this recently- welfare of animals has improved and I feel happy that said animals are being looked after better- win win? Should I have kept out of it? NO would I do it again? YES if there is a genuine welfare issue. There you go ;) ;)

OK, what gives a person the right to inflict cruelty and suffering and endanger the life of an animal, regardless of whether in ignorance or (worse) deliberately? Could you seriously stand by and watch wanton inhumanity?

Oh, Devil.
Sometimes I feel like beating the cat for a bit of relief from the tedium of HHO.

(That sounded far too much like a euphemism, didn't it?)
