Damn why is that at the other end of the country? Mum is looking for a retirement hack and an ex trekking pony would suit a treat.
Day trip? Or you could always take a punt on one and buy unseen. Tommy looks a nice sort ;)

Friend sent me this of Kent Gypsy fair Addington , early this month. Gives an idea of what was there!

I've heard the horse trade is pretty poor at fairs generally, not much available.

That one looks very cute. I avoid auctions at all cost, too many potential pity purchases.

Yes, that's the one that caught my eye too.

As Goldenstar says it's the faces that stay with you.
Ages ago I went to Appleby with a friend. As we arrived I gave her all my money & she promised not to give it back even if I begged. Then we saw the saddest pair of donkeys. I did beg but she kept her promise & I'm still wondering what happened to them. :(

I hate them I worked for dealer years ago and he always went to Southall and Cambridge mainly and I spent most of the day crying I was only 17.

He was not very nice and if you got a bit attached to one that hung around at his yard for long he made you go with him to ride it round at the sale when it was sold😔

Poor donkeys 😞 My family banned me from going to the local livestock auction, they always have rabbits that’s go for meat but they are pet breeds rather than the meat breeds. The poor bunnies are terrified because it’s so noisy and they are in horrible wire cages that cut their feet. That place is a sorry state of affairs, I wish they would shut it down. Even some of the farm stock look in poor condition.

Why did you you have to put that catalogue on here Goldie's mum ;)

2 donkeys Molly and Dolly who have lived together are probably going to be split up, i hope someone buys them both, (and no it won't be me .).

On lot 63 at Brecon. Quite a few horses going for less than I would have thought, and several unsold. If anyone wants a project, now's your change. The online bidding and livestream is actually working for a change.

No donkeys but @nagblagger, wouldn't you like a cob to go with your collection?

Or a bigger trailer maybe?

Is Brecon in guineas?

Aww that makes it look like a lovely, jolly affair which it most definitely isn’t. There’s usually a mass brawl for the police to attend to and the poor, thin and lice riddled ponies aren’t particularly cheap. It’s a horrible experience for the animals and should be banned 😡

We’re planning to go to the Beaulieu sales in June. Anyone got any tips/experiences to share?
Not been to Beaulieu in particular but have bought at livestock auctions regularly. I'd say take someone with you who knows your price limit & who knows you well enough to stop you if you get over excited. Also arrive early and listen to the auctioneer for a while because its easier to tell what they're saying if you get your ear in. When you're looking at the lots before hand take written notes. You start off thinking 'I wont forget that one' but they get blurred after you look at a few & you can waste time going back round the pens to check which one you didn't like because xyz.

@maya2008 What are you looking for? You've got/had experience with foresters haven't you? Get there early to view. Pick a few, set limit and don't be tempted by the 'just another bid" option. B.Rd sells in guineas (£1.05). Some also have VAT to add to sale price so bear that in mind too. Transport, are you bringing yours with you? Check the rulings regarding this as you'll need proper partitions if buying more than one.

June sale has a youngstock show before the sale commences. I haven't checked the dates, but normally the October one has a foal show too.

Thank you so much for that! We’ve had foresters for over 20 years now, but not bought from the sales before. I have had plenty of unhandled youngsters though, so that would be nothing new. I know the breeder we got my mare from takes hers there so not all will be feral youngstock, but I am assuming that is what we will come home with (anything more handled than that is a bonus)! Have a secure stable and help for the initial stages, if needed.

We are ideally looking for 3+ year old, 13.3/14hh or so. Open to part bred depending on the cross. Want a nice temperament and good enough conformation to carry an adult. Will be hacking only, no need to have show lines or anything like that. Plan is to get the catalogue, mark ones we are interested in and stick to those when we get there. We only want one so we’re going to take the partition out in case it’s a feral one. That’s what I have always done before. Do they prefer/manage to get them in partitions?

Do you have to register before the day (like when you ask for the catalogue) or do you sign in when you turn up?

Hoping this will be a better option than traipsing up and down the country. One location, more than one option, interesting day out if we come home with nothing.

Thanks, I will definitely do that when the catalogue comes out. Need to avoid any with good shoe lines too as they will likely go over budget (up to £3k but would prefer to spend less if we can). Would prefer feral as in my experience they make great novice ponies once trained. They never forget how to handle themselves and don’t spend their lives waiting for someone to tell them what to do!

Catalogue for Witherslack.

(Not in person but I didn't know where else to post it. )
Doesn't seem to be any provision for viewing or vetting before hand. ?
Says viewings can be arranged from the 16th to 21st. And sales' unwarranted so people should be expecting to take a punt without vetting anyway. Apparently, all the ones that have been used in the riding school had a vet inspection (~2 stage) for licensing last year anyway.

Some nice looking cobs there though. Will be interesting to see much how they go for.
