Snow

Actually snow is good for the ground as it provides some slow release nitrogen in a way that rain doesn't 😎
Actually that is something I knew (for once - reading old farming texts at uni) but I was thinking more of the sludge that follows a melt. I assume the Spring melt, when the grass is going to start getting away again, is more useful, as long as sufficiently prolonged.

Yes, I think you are right! But even now there is some value in snow. The coming sludge ideally would be avoided on pasture though my silly horses still have 24/7 access to their field so will contribute to a degree of vile sludge, slush and churned up grass. Sigh.

We rarely get snow but I am a bit obsessed with keeping a good base in the winter fields as I really really hate the sludge, whatever the cause. I think my livery gets a bit annoyed when I say we can always hay them and shut up most of the fields in March 😁

I left the yard in heavy rain this morning (Surrey) and by the time I hit Junction 16 on the M25 I was in heavy snow flurries. Not that it slowed many people down...

The pictures are soo beautiful. It's warming up again for the weekend (on my forecast at least) so it's fleeting beauty.
Don't worry, its still raining in NW Surrey......

Slightly unexpectedly (because I didn't check the forecast) it's snowing here! Not in a very exciting way, and not really settling but, still, it's snow. Pondering whether to wake the kitten up to see if he's interested - it will be his first time.

My neighbour left us a box of eggs from our jointly managed hens on the hedge between our kitchens yesterday and no one noticed so when I got them just now they were frozen to the hedge, snowy and, inside, frozen to the rather soggy box.

Snow is still here. Temperature is only getting up to 1° during the day so it's not melting at all.

We now have warnings for more snow tomorrow night and Saturday morning. After that the temperature is going up, so hoping it's all gone on sunday!

Ours is still here too, more today and again tonight possibly tomorrow night too. Then between 6 and 12 ml of rain, so all the fields will flood, we have juat under 1000 ewes in the fields all sorted rams went out today as we can't keep delaying, we will have to move everyone on Friday.
Can't get the blackie rams to the hill currently due to the snow making the tracks impassable, when the rain comes we won't be able to get out due to the burns running to high to cross.

Still loads of snow here because it’s so cold it’s not melting… will be here until the weekend Is expect when it’s going to be 12 degrees and 45 mph winds!! I’d rather this weather than that!

I’ve just realised we were supposed to be doing a hawk day on horseback in Devon tomorrow. The forecast looks awful so, for the first time, my broken ankle is a positive!

We've had more snow overnight; not a huge amount but it's now so icy that doing anything is v laborious. Cancelled a lesson I was due to have as I can't tow down to the road which is also now a skating rink and haven't ridden either. I might ride today to check our hill ponies and bring down any errant ewes at least but actually looking forwards to reading and sitting in front of the fire! Tomorrow's forecast is dire so either more snow if we are high enough or rain, rain, rain...I'm not complaining; this Autumn has been infinitely easier than last so far!
