Storm

@Asha Friends of mine had their shelter come over a hedge. When putting it back up they were advised to have a wind outlet at the top of the back wall to allow the wind to go out rather than going up and lifting it.
We had a large poultry shed converted to a field shelter, the local farmer who did the job made sure that the wind could get through. He understands exactly how destructive our winds can be.

When it was windy a while back my shelter nearly blew away (hadn't been anchored yet), I knocked out the top row of shiplap all round the top to let the wind escape, we then put some wooden posts in with proper postcrete and screwed it to them with some super duper screws and finger crossed so far it's still standing - we're on Exmoor so it gets pretty windy!

Overnight we lost the garden gate and our 45ft conifer split in 2. One section came down but ended up resting on other branches and leaning towards the house.

We've spent literally hours today, hacking away at branches until it finally came down, just short of the house thank God.

Sadly I think I'm going to have to get a tree surgeon in to reduce the height of all the trees by half.

ETA the back wall of our shed has come down too.

@southerncomfort are you and animals ok?

We're OK thanks nagblagger, just mightily p***** off with this weather now!

I've put ponies out tonight. We still have 40 to 50mph gusts overnight but the stables are behind the garden and I'm worried about the rest of the tree coming down now.

Hope everyone else is OK.

Just resurrecting this thread hoping everyone stays safe overnight. Gusting strongly here at the moment. Saw Ireland and parts of Cumbria and Scotland Are under a tornado watch too.😲😲

Dark, wet and windy. next few days look horrible. Are yours in or out? Rugged or naked. Mine are naked and out but do have shelter. They can choose to be in if they like. Not looking forward to next few days.
Mine in, tried to in hand walk one and she got too spooky, the other gave up riding and lunged instead.

Mine lost his marbles earlier today and was spinning, twisting, turning, running me over, etc. at about 230 this afternoon when I went to get him. Somehow managed to keep my arm attached (not sure how) but took 3 tries to actually close the gate as mine kept pushing back through and spinning around wanting to take flight.

Mine have been out for about six hours before it got too bad but we’re ready to come in by 2.30pm. Its definitely milder here though - I’ve reduced the thickness of rugs and the we have mud back instead of frost… but now can’t ride because of the wind! I’ll hopefully get them out for a bit tomorrow and see what happens Tuesday as it’s meant to be heavy rain on Tuesday as well as windy... they haven’t missed a day of turnout since they started staying in at night at the beginning of December so we have done well. 💪

It's dreadful here in West Wales rain torrential high winds.
I put loads of haylege in the pole barn and the horses staying in there munching away quite happy and dry.
Lost power for a couple of hours at 4pm it keeps dipping down again now half expect it to go down again soon.
Hope this passes over quickly it's a bit scary.

Where in West Eales are you @setterlover ?

Brought in at 6pm as usual and a branch fell in front of us. Dancing snorting dragons and with one 17hh it wasn't fun. Shetland didn't care as she knows the faster she gets up to the stables, the quicker she'll have her dinner (a fairy's handful of chaff but she gets terribly excited!) It's blowing hard outside and I tied things down earlier and turned wheelbarrows upside down etc.

The chickens spent the afternoon hunkered down in their dust bath hole all snuggled up together and were happy to go to bed tonight. Their coop and night run is pegged down.

Stay safe all - it will blow over (pun intended!)

Gusting between 50-60mph here at the moment but a local weather page has just posted that 80mph is likely through the night. I was planning to turn out as usual tomorrow but given how they all behaved when being brought in today I am thinking it may be safer for all to leave in!

Ooo! Just drove over to sleep in the truck off for an early start in the morning and it was horrible.
I suddenly was very conscious of the tree incident two years ago . There were a lot of branches down so I'm glad I came over tonight
I got to the truck to read a message saying no one is to start before 6 in the morning. I was very relieved to see that.
I'm getting blown around a bit stood still as I've got no weight on.
Horrible horrible night, lock your doors and stay safe, when they tell us not to go out it's bad! (Crawford)

Was worried about barn roof blowing off so we've turned the horses out tonight, they have a large open field so figured if tree branches come down they will dash out of the way, rather that than anything happening and them being stuck in the stables!

Who knows what to do for the best in these conditions!
