Number 4 vet fail under my belt. So am looking at all the adverts again. Seriously (no, actually I am being tongue in cheek so please don't be offended), is there no other way to describe a horse? Pulled up a Horsemart Search for All Rounder, XX-XX height, X-X years, and they all bar one started with the word 'Stunning' on the first page. HHo ads were 7/11 'stunning'. Horsedeals similar.

I've always been a 'While I may not agree with what people have to say, I'll defend to the death their right to say it' sprt of person (apologies to Ms Hall), but after a couple of hours today I think my defense mechanisms are well and truly up the spout. [insert jaded horse-search face here]

Perhaps this is a clever SEO process I don't know about that gets the advert bumped to the top of the page. Even if it is, I am stunned that 'stunning' is pretty much the only adjective available to horsey people selling their horses. Or is it just ascribed to horses £3.5k and under?

Please help me compile a lexicon of adjectives that can used in horse adverts. We will then throw some stealth moves to infiltrate the sales market and prevent further over-iteration of the word 'stunning'.:D In one word, describe your horse below. I shall start with mine:

Absent.

Mine is...err.....Stunning :D :D

Sorry, couldn't resist! :p ;)

The TB is kind
ISH is (far too) talented (for me)
The Section A is cheeky!

The one I am selling at the moment is fairly stunning but I used 2 words in his heading which were more relevant to the market he is aimed at SAFE & SENSIBLE ;) :)

I am sorry to hear you have had yet another fail:(

Sorry... Probably should not say this but pmsl! That's websites and seo for you!!! hope you find your true 'stunning' horse soon:rolleyes::o

Breath-taking, handsome, gorgeous, Beautiful, Amazing, impressive, spectacular (I would argue that this one is over selling, even the best horse in the world!), striking, wonderful.... Adjective creator is my job title ;) and I agree 'stunning' is over used!

Over-use of the word "stunning" drives me mad too! Beauty is subjective and therefore it should be up to the individual to decide whether something is stunning, rather than being told that it is.

I'm starting to get a bit peeved about the word "awesome" too which is creeping its way into everyday life....

(just call me Scrooge! :p)

Willing
Laid back
Forward going
Sweet natured...

Then the subjective ones:

Mental
Attractive
Handsome
;)

Ha, yes; most overused adjective in the UK ads is "stunning" - I sometimes daydream about all the people laid up with concussion after being so regularly "stunned"...........

I was looking at adverts earlier today for a friend, and yes, stunning is overused! You also have to mention the horse's "potential" to do a discipline it has yet to compete in, even if the horse is a teenager! Also saw a lot of "smart" (to describe looks) and "super" as in "super smart".

My boy was described as 'Exquisite' but had none of the usual Section D adjectives. Just an honest advert from an honest breeder. :)

The most lyrical I'm likely to get is "correct"; perhaps that's why any horse I have for sale is most unlikely to fail the vet :-)

haha...my advert currently uses 'stunning' - and I work in marketing, including copywriting!!
(scuttles off to hang head in shame - feeling a bit 'stunned ;) )

Can we start an anti-cliché campaign? And a request to include the following, seemingly elusive, information in EVERY advertisement:
Height/age/sex/level of training - it's astonishing the number of ads that fail to provide even one of these pieces of information.

Glad it's not only me who visualises buyer lying on the ground or swaying dangerously which is what I do very time I read a " stunning ad ".

"Talented", "Versatile"...."has competed at training shows" (usuallly in Ireland). "Great potential".

OP, seriously, if you can find a good/reliable contact in Ireland, you will probably get very good value for money. There are still some good horses around - don't give up!

I couldn't describe my mare as stunning, or pretty, or even cute  her head is too big, her legs are too short and her ears look like a mule. Plus she's currently in the lawnmower club so she's not even an attractive lawnmower!

Is 'hippo' an adjective?

(I do love her though and I'd never tell her to her face :D )

.....relatively attractive.....??! :D

I do hate the word stunning as that generally makes me look at the picture and I disagree! Also, I tend to avoid actual 'stunning' horses as I find, and prefer more, shall we say "unique looking" ones as I find they tend to not be quite so neurotic as the 'stunning'! hehe. That is from my experience of buying an (on paper) 'stunning' with 'great potential in the right hands' pony. That second sentence is the next one to avoid in my book too. Means horse is essentially a fruit loop! ha ha

hippoesk might be an adjective ;)

I don't think I've ever bought a 'stunning', I've definitely bought a fair few 'smart's though (again I think that's a bit of an Irish one).

Sitting here thinking about it - yes adverts that dont have the main criteria age/height/sex gets me, what niggles me more than people describing a horse or pony how their eye's see it, are the photos.

There are far more terrible photos than adverts.

If looking for a horse to buy I don't tend to go for a horse that seems to only comprise of a head, or one at an obscure angle that makes the horse look like a cut and shut. Even the ones of a pony who obviously is novice at jumping giving the jump a load of scope and looking really uncomfortable over the jump get to me.

My current horse was 'a nice person' - well 8 months in and he still looks pretty equine to me.
