The coronation carriage, isn't this a bit excessive?

I get that it's how people are feeling, and that everyone has a right to write whatever they want. But is anyone else getting so depressed with it feeling like every thread ends up with caustic political comments, even the ones about horses, that they're being put off using the forum?
I think its fashionable to be a doomsayer these days - everything is bad , everyone is bad and if someone is suffering for any reason, no one else should be allowed to feel joy. no wonder there is a mental health crisis at the moment - the media has a lot to answer for.

Some of the poorest will benefit because they will work extra hours in hospitality/ get extra pay for working the BH on Monday/may even find a job

And some may lose money because where they work is closed on the bank holiday like cafes I use

Some supermarkets will be operating bank holiday hours so people working there will be doing fewer hours and there will be businesses that are closed where if people are paid by shift, they will lose that day.

Those working in Pret or MacDonalds near the route won't be getting extra pay working today, they'll just be busier and there's such a shortage of hospitality staff, they're probably already doing the maximum amount of shifts.

There is no legal entitlement to extra pay on bank holidays and staff are expected to work as part of their contract with time off at a quieter time instead. Hotel chains like Premier Inn don't pay extra on bank holidays so it'll be business as usual. They'll be charging a lot more per night but the staff won't see it. Money will be made by some people but not necessarily by those who need it

I'm just not seeing all this optimism and joy on the ground in a rough bit of London. Chatting to neighbours when putting out the rubbish, they're not watching/celebrating and don't know anyone that is. I did see an anti coronation gathering advertised in the next borough though.

I agree the cost wouldn't realistically make any difference to the poverty in this country but telling people struggling to cheer up and enjoy it and be grateful if any crumbs come their way doesn't seem right either.

Completely. Just clicked on to it, what a shame. Meanwhile all the americans here are just full of joy on our behalf over the whole thing. One of my friends is upstairs baking a quiche and scones at 3am in the morning....

I haven't seen/heard that happen anywhere tbh. But I do know that some community groups are organising street party type events where people can eat for free, or for whatever they wish to donate. Some have organised group baking sessions preparing food to share, with donated ingredients, so that no-one who doesn't want to be needs to feel left out. I can't speak for any area of London but I have certainly seen plenty of bunting etc around some of the poorest areas locally.

I was thinking in this thread where people are being accused of being negative if they are not celebrating.

Since this thread started, I have been keeping an eye out for any signs on bus journeys and not seen a single bit of bunting or flags. Nothing in the windows of cafes, pubs or restaurants either independent or chains. But I am talking about areas in the top 10% of deprived areas in the country, bus journeys that take me past a few food banks.. I haven't had cause to go into some of the posher areas in the last couple of weeks, so maybe there's more going on there.

By contrast I gave up hacking out in Herts on Sunday due to the proliferation of huge flags. No mow may seems to have turned into give every patch of green, hedgerow and garden a short back and sides apart from one front lawn - am waiting to see if the owners get arrested as traitors. A big picnic is being arranged, not sure how it will work and if food would be shared but as there aren't any poor people in the village, it's academic.

Some of the horses behind the carriage looking a little challenging fit their riders. Was watching a you tube video last night of tourist taking pictures with the mounted sentry horses - constant flow and one little girl who was entranced by the horse.

Just thinking how times change. I just had a quick look on a local history website, there are pictures of big street parties in 1953 on 3 streets within 100 yards of here, there would have been more, that's just the photos they've found. 70 years later, nothing.

Over 7000 registered.

You might want to avoid Lambeth - 43 street parties there.

To be fair none of you are coming across as the life and souls of a party (not that there’s a single party, sausage roll or piece of bunting to be had according to cristo)

it's possible to not be the life and soul of the party and not be depressed though... there's not a single piece of bunting to be seen in our town, no parties planned (as far as I'm aware) but my kids have just asked for sausage rolls for lunch so weve got that right 😅 it's really not for me but for those with plans, or those who are looking forward to watching I do hope you have a lovely day.

I said there were no signs in the 3 boroughs in north London I move round on a regular basis, I pointed out there was lots happening in the bit of Hertfordshire where I keep my horse and said that I hadn't been in the more affluent pockets locally in the last couple of weeks so they may paint a different picture.

As there's been no publicity locally, didn't know the street parties were tomorrow.

However I did find a map where you can put your postcode in and there's nothing local to me in the area with all the photos from 1953.

I've had to go and look at the map and there's nothing in our area on there either but I know a couple of streets are setting up their gardens and having a party, I think that's easier than having to get permission from the council to shut the road, I bet it's much harder to block a road off these days
