The coronation carriage, isn't this a bit excessive?

Possibly implying that he was waiting for his mother to die and that was a good thing.

Why? Isn't it just taking the Guinness slogan which plays how long it takes and refers to how long he's been preparing for the role. It's not like how old he is and how long he's waited hadn't been discussed endlessly elsewhere.

I'm mainly just not interested in the RF, I dislike the other pomp and ceremony but I can see how it could provide a morale boost to some. However, I can't help finding the whole thing rather distasteful and I'm sick of the arguments about so called tradition.

"Tradition is just peer pressure from dead people" 😜😜

I prefer “Tradition is not the worship of ashes but the preservation of fire”

I don't think anyone is delusional enough to think not having a coronation would end poverty in the UK..... but such an extravagant display during the cost of living crisis is tasteless imo. Of course there will be income generated from this. Will any of it benefit the poorest in our society, doubt it

Living in a perpetual state of misery is not sustainable.

A celebration & a coming together of community can massively improve morale and allow people to see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Some people seem to believe that as a people we should be completely self flagellating, sell off or destroy everything valuable or pretty, destroy the economy and live in misery and depression to atone for sins that some peoples ancestors have committed.

Id prefer to keep moving forward. Building a better and brighter future. And yes that involves parties, community and pretty things.

What light at the end or the tunnel is coming from this?!

People could argue we have not had an elected Prime Minister since Boris Johnson😈 In theory, we don't vote for a PM, just the party but the personality of the party leader will affect the results.

I will be watching the Coronation today, probably not it all but definitely the parts where the horses are involved😁

But the economy is boosted, everyone benefits.

I get that it's how people are feeling, and that everyone has a right to write whatever they want. But is anyone else getting so depressed with it feeling like every thread ends up with caustic political comments, even the ones about horses, that they're being put off using the forum?

Does anyone remember Unboxed, the Festival of creativity/Brexit celebration thing that happened last year, and cost £120m?
I bet hardly anyone does.
Everyone will remember this, even if the only thing they remember is that they didn't like it
Exactly, everyone will remember this!

For Some people this is the first and last coronation they will see….
Others may have been lucky enough to see both and some may be lucky enough to be around when Prince William has his.
Either way it is a moment of history, whether it is celebrated or not 😊

Im going to watch in the background mostly but I will watch the actual event and as others have said, the 🐴

It doesn’t put me off using the forum, but it does get a fair bit of eye rolling from me.

Maybe an idea to have a separate Coronation Day thread now for those intent on enjoying it, and killjoys could also create their own thread to moan about it then everyone can converge on this one again once it’s all over for a scrap.

Having only just realised that our local party in the park is Monday not today, I'll be watching Guardians of the Galaxy.

Another escapist entertainment that cost an arm and a leg to make bit will pay back a lot more than it cost 🤣

But the 2 things are completely unrelated. Some of the poorest will benefit because they will work extra hours in hospitality/ get extra pay for working the BH on Monday/may even find a job because some hospitality venues have been 'rescued' by the extra business generated. Other companies which have also had business generated by the Coronation have also employed more people. However, *this gvt* has chosen to allow more and more people to slide into poverty over the last 12 yrs. That is a complete disgrace but is absolutely nothing to do with the RF who have patently no influence whatsoever over what ejected politicians do.

The thread title is implied criticism, so most people should expect some debate/discord when they open the thread. Although, perhaps the thread might be better moved to Current Affairs
