They cautiously think they may have pinned it down, at last! This afternoon she has had an endoscopy to check her esophagus and stomach. We had been repeatedly asking if the fact she has had a little dry cough, or more of a clearing her throat going on before and more so since she became unwell. Her vet agreed this morning it might be worth pursuing although they couldn't see any obvious signs of a problem in her mouth or throat and neck area.

Well in wasn't the esophagus or the actual stomach but the valve that connects the bottom of the esophagus into the stomach area is very, very red and inflamed. So much so that the sedation they had given her wasn't enough as she started trying to reflex cough, whimper and shift as they poked around the area, they gave her even more and still she reacted to the pain. Vet thinks she has been in tremendous pain and no wonder very reluctant to eat anything and becoming more ill with each passing day. There is also a large pool of saliva in her stomach that she has been unable to bring up since her symptoms obviously worsened.

They have no idea why this has happened, and are still not ruling out that it might be connected to some sort of auto immune thing going on, but I wonder if that may be just to back up their concentrating on the immune side of things? Very hard thing for them to investigate I would imagine as so many different and difficult things going on. Biopsies have been taken just in case, and we should get the results of those in the next 24-48 hours. The plan for now is she is going on three more different meds, she will be in for sometime while they try to heal the area and hopefully reduce the pain and inflammation enough for her to be able to eat. Her diet will have to change completely going forward but not a problem. The hard dry food she is on now is a very good one, Calibra, but probably won't be suitable for the future but they will work out a new diet for her when we are further down the road.

I cannot tell you how happy we are that they at least hopefully now know what they are dealing with and her chances now are very good indeed for full recovery, providing biopsies and a few other test results don't throw up any more issues.
So happy!😍🥰 Jessie all tucked up warm on a winter morning, she hates going out in the cold so my son wraps her up in her blanket and she has a duvet day on the sofa until the weather improves.😅 Can't wait to get her home again.

Wonderful news Mrs J. Poor Jessie being in pain and unable to say .
Now they've found the problem hopefully they'll fix it.

Ruby is back on her "normal" diet and off her meds but we had 6 months of omeprazole after her sto.ach stopped emptying and 3 months of metaclopramide full dose and 3 months half dose, plus a long course of antibiotics. Touch wood she's never looked back though the first month of recovery was a bit hit and miss.
Sending all the healing vibes for Jessie and a peaceful evening for the human family xxx

Thats very interesting misst as it sounds almost identical to the route the vet is saying we will be going down with Jessie if everything else is OK. Did they say why her stomach stopped emptying, as the vet is telling me that is what is happening now, hence the pool of saliva that is sitting in her stomach?

We have been warned that initially it will be a bit trial and error, and that she might be in for sometime as they don't want her going home until she is feeling much better and they know the treatment is working. At this moment in time we are just glad that she now has a very good chance she will come home again eventually. Not sure our bank manager will be so thrilled with an extended stay though! 😊

No cause was ever found for Ruby. She was tested for mega oesophagus which thankfully was negative and her stomach emptying remained slow for a good couple of months (baium xrays over a time frame confirmed it). Her bloods for liver and kidneys were almost normal so poison seemed unlikely
Our other dog remained well throughout. She was a healthy 2yo JRT with no history of problems.
It's remained a mystery and I get paranoid when she coughs, which she does occasionally or if I think she's vomiting eg when eating grass etc. Her laparotomy healed perfectly and she seems entirely none the worse for upsetting us so much.
Reading your account of Jessie this past week it seems very similar.
I hope her outcome is as good as Ruby's x

Been checking in daily, at least you know what you are dealing with, here's for some positive progress and she is going to feel so much better soon. Give her a hug from me.
